Why don’t you want to put the scent bird in a launcher?

Because you don't want to startle the dog when the launcher releases the bird. Some young dogs won't peg the bird until they are just about on top of it. So always plant the scent bird down-wind of the launcher, so they find that bird first. Make sense?

I dont understand using pigeons??? Everyone says a bird is a bird... I think it's safe to say that they can smell the difference between a pigeon, quail, or pheasant. Ive seen dogs that wont lock down hard on a medowlark or dove. I would prefer a dog that doesn't point every kind of bird it comes across.

Pigeon has more smell than a quail. Yes the dog knows the difference. The dog learns which birds are what you want. Some dogs only point wild birds with style. In trials many clubs use pen quail. Some dogs don’t like pen quail. The launcher restricts the scent somewhat. George has a good program.

@quailoaksranch7895 I think you hit the nail on the head. The dog quickly learns what the handler is hunting for. I agree that George has a great program, which is why I went to his videos first to refresh my memory on training my new puppy.
