Series in which celebrities trace their ancestry, discovering secrets and surprises from their past. As a Protestant growing up in Catholic Ireland, Graham Norton sometimes felt that he and his family were made to feel like foreigners in their own country. Keen to discover just how deeply rooted in Ireland his family are, Graham starts by trying to discover why his maternal great-grandmother used two different maiden names, and visits the village of Carnew where his dad came from.

It does happen Graham Norton. My husband's supposed 2nd great grandfather was a widower aged 51, when he married a 22-year-old woman (hubby's ancestress) who was 8 months pregnant. We figured it out why he waited 8 months to marry her. His eldest son was 24 and married with 2 children, we believe he had got the girl pregnant, so his widowed dad married the girl. We figured it out when my husband's sister found out they shared DNA with his first wife's sister's and brother's descendants. They descend from the 2nd wife, and through her son with whom she was 8 months pregnant when they married. They went on to have 5 more children after him and those descendants do not share DNA with the first wife's siblings' descendants. Not too bad a deal for him, a man over 50 and a widower to get a young wife by simply claiming his grandchild as his child by marrying the grandchild's mother. So, he is actually hubby's 3rd great grandfather.

In Australia, back in the day, people often had to wait until a priest or minister of the church visited on their circuit. Often people had several children before the marriage was formalised by 'the church'!

You can divide the eras by Graham sporting a beard or not. Without beard: old times, with beard, modern times.

not saying he looks old now, he doesn’t, but you can tell he was much younger

this is from 2007, 17 years ago, and if that was recorded around the same time, that’d mean he was about 44! I was thinking mid to at most late 20s not older than me (30s), he looked like a foetus hah

My 123 grandma Hanley was an angel. My great Aunt Rosemary lived with her. I regret not asking my dad more about them.

My Paternal Grandfathers mother was a Norton. She was born in Ireland but immigrated to the states as a child with her parents. I dont know very much about her.
