I’ve been researching my great great-grandmother’s life. I had hit a small brick wall in Montana, so took a parallel path by starting to research the restaurant that she had started in her small town there. In 1913, she had sold it to a Joe Manos. I followed him in the area directory as the owner of the restaurant until I lost him after 1930 due to a 8-year gap in online directories. So, I just googled him. The first thing I found was his incarceration record from early 1932! The restaurant had burned down in June 1931, and he murdered a neighbor that following December. Seeing his mugshot really filled out the lives around my ancestor, more than just reading articles in the local newspaper. Although newspapers are terrific sources-I decided to research Manos to see when he first showed up in town, and in doing so, I got that 1913 date when he acquired the restaurant, then I found out when my ancestor’s husband stopped managing the hotel above the restaurant and consequently when the couple left Montana soon after losing the manager job. If I hadn’t looked up Manos, I would never had gotten those dates for my ancestor’s timeline.

@@joyodrobina6893 Try the city directory for the time period you know he had the bar. It should list both his home address and his work one. Then you could search for his work address to see if the bar’s name pops up. Another possibility after getting the bar’s address is to search for historic photos of the neighborhood. You might get lucky and find one of the bar! Before moving to Montana, my great-great-grandmother had a barbershop across the street from the Union Stockyards in Chicago. I found a newspaper photo of striking workers gathered at the bar a half block south of her shop for a rally. It’s the closest I’ll probably ever get to seeing her business.

Joy, tax records for him and his brother might show the name of the bar.

It's visceral - I mean, you look upon the countenance of someone you've only heard about. A wave of sentimentality washes over you and suddenly you realize their blood is coursing through your veins. It's truly amazing when you stumble across images of your forebears and your eyes are looking back at you, or you recognize your own jawline. It's almost impossible to fully explain. The older one gets, when you have lived more years than years remaining, mortality becomes real. I have a few scoundrels peppering my family tree, but mostly, my lineage is a proud one, with successful individuals who made a mark whilst on earth. It is just so exciting to discover that your bloodline is filled with people that changed the world for the good. Of course there are a few derelicts, but every family has those! 😁

They glossed over Al's two bouts with gonorrhea (last in 1910) right in there amongst the syphillis... Nellie sure knew he was messing around. Poor lady.

Bootlegging during the prohibition was big money! So if he was that profitable before prohibition he was probably making pretty good money.

All you people crying in your milk over this Must Remember how long ago this was and Remember where you were during that time frame. This period was early 1900 and what opportunities were available in the back country (Arkansas) during that time. That time was a time of feuds going on, people who would take your last dollar in these times of being told that you were the owner of Oil on your property (scam); REMEMBER, backwoods farming, having a shack for your family to live in. Supporting a family. Hey my grandpa and grandma farmed other peoples property and lived in a sod hot in those days. This is was life!

The voice overs explaining everything are very annoying. The original UK version of this show rarely uses added commentary. They let the subjects snd interviewees tell the story. Are American audiences dumber so they need constant explanation or are the program makers talking down to them? Either way, it's annoying.
