The German writer Karl May wrote several adventure books about the wild west in the US and also about the Middle East. Some of his books were made into movies in the 1960's. Main character of several books are Winnetou and Old Shatterhand. May is writing books from the perspective of his alter ego Old Shatterhand. This went so far that many people actually believed that he really was Old Shatterhand, what is not true. But he was a really popular writer, so most Germans know his books or at least the main ones from the movies. "Der Schuh das Manitu" is a parody on these movies from the 60's and Winnetouch and Ranger are representing Winnetou and Old Shatterhand in this movie. And they used real native Americans in the movie. There weren't any in the 1960's movies I think.

For anyone interested Tried my best to translate the trailer :) Text on screen: "The myth is alive" "The legend is coming back" Narrator: "In a time where blood brotherhood wasn't just a word, there was an adventure that would change history forever" "Indians!" "Hello!" "You're making coffee" * Howling in the background * "What's that?" "A caffeinated hot drink" "Abahachi, my brother!" "Dark clouds are rising over the land where the shoshones are living" "Where is my gold" "Don't interrupt him, you asshole" * Complaining * "Always just arrows and shooting and it's so loud" Narrator: "A movie about big feelings" "The new movie made by Michael "Bully" Herbig" * In a bunny costume * "Should I try to distract them again?" Narrator: "Manitous Shoe" * Jumping on horse * In pain "My brother" Narrator "Spring 2001 only in cinema" I think almost everyone in Germany has seen this movie or heard of it. Michael Bully Herbig is a great comedian and a lot of people love his work. While Traumschiff Surprise is a parody of Star Wars/Star Trek, Der Schuh des Manitu is a parody of the Winnetou movies which are based on the books by Karl May, who are also very popular in Germany, I'm not sure how popular they are elsewhere since they are german

Some details that I see not mentioned in the comments yet: - The characters in the film speak with a Bavarian accent to translate the “South American accent”. - The film is above all a parody of the old German Winnetou westerns based on the novels by Karl May. - Pierre Brice, who played the role of Winnetou in the original films, disagreed with this movie and publicly stated to Bully that he had no respect for the original films. - The films are sometimes criticized for their stereotypical portrayal of gay men. The same is true for Traumschiff surprise and other work of Bully.

I saw this movie in a cinema and I pissed myself in laughter. One of the things that makes this movie so hilarious is the fact, that the actor who plays the character of Santa Maria (the tall greyhaired guy in black clothes and the black hat), Sky du Mont, used to be booked in boring german crime shows like "Derrick", "Der Alte" and so on, playing serious and honestly blend characters with absolutely no humour in it. And here he kind of plays with his image of the serious actor and delivers some great one-liners like "So, jetzt geht nochmal jeder aufs Klo und dann reiten wir los!" which means something like "Right... now everyone goes to the loo and then we'll be riding off!"

"Der Schuh des Manitu" is the actual classic. There hadn't been a movie this funny and well done in a long time in germany. Unfortunately it doesn't translate well to english. The use of dialects and puns for example. But this was a big hit. Everyone went to see it. "Traumschiff Surprise" came later and sort of benefited from the success of "Der Schuh des Manitu". More Cameos, more silly characters from Michael Bully Herbigs TV show called "Die Bullyparade". That show was basically lots of sketches, most of them very silly, but also quite original. Michael Bully Herbig, Rick Kavanian and Christian Tramitz invented unique and fresh characters that grew over time. The TV Show and both movies - all of it kind of builds on the silly universe Michael Bully Herbig and his coworkers created over years.

It was technically the film set for the 1965 movie For a Few Dollars More, which has later been converted to a theme park, but it's still used as a stage for Old West movies until today. It is a parody of the REALLY big Winnetou westerns back from the 1960s (based on Karl May, a German author of the late 19th century, who wrote about Native American and Oriental cultures a lot in the then popular escapist Orientalist mindset - without ever having set foot in said countries, of course). The most hilarious thing in this movie is that the main characters speak with a heavy Bavarian accent, and one speaks with a heavy Greek accent and syntax (or at least with what we believe to be a Greek accent and syntax)… It‘s about like staging a Western with Cockney or Pakistani actors or something like that…

And perforator here means the weapon, that is supposed to make holes in everything it shoots, so it's perforating everything. It's the "Super Perforator". That's not a usual name for a "gun", they used it just here in this movie. From the context it's clear what it means. And I don't remember any other songs in that movie. It might be the only song. It was no musical. And this makes it stand out even more, it's just crazy, it doesn't fit, it's like a joke that you would never expect. The dark person with no sense of humor (well, usually when there is such a person in a movie) plays a commercial song as the last whish... And it was very very exaggerated, he didn't just say it, didn't just sing it, he played it with two other people as a perfect live commercial dance performance (from the perspective of the victims) (they made this song for this movie only).

And the person who asks for this commercial is played as a very naive person who doesn't know what's going on, doesn't know that this might be the last minute of his life, everything is just fun, everything is kindergarden... And the two others beside him are played in this situation like they don't know what to think about that, could that change their inevitable fate? But how? They rather think, OK, that's it, it would be over quickly anyways... So, the two others look rather sceptical while the naive person anjoys it... That's another part of the crazy thing that's going on there ;-) And we as the audience know that this is not the first joke in this movie, it will go on, we just don't know yet how they will survive, but OK, let's enjoy this crazy funny commercial performance... It's a fun movie anyways, no danger, enjoy it.

And in other parts of this movie, the two more rational guys often think and say something like "oh no, another crazy idea of this (naive) guy, he constantly brings us into dangerous situations..." And somehow they can escape from these situations, but in that situations they often have crazy conversations like "look what you have done" (maybe when they end up tied to a stake, literally), the response might be something silly and unrelated like this with a big happy smiling face, looking up to the sky: "but it's nice weather anyways" (something like that. I don't know if they really say exactly that in one case, but it's like this). It's a fun movie... Don't think too much about it, just enjoy it... Yes, that's difficult just with subtitles... It's pretty safe to say every German born before 1995 has seen this movie. I must have watched it about five times just in cinemas during the year of release alone. I was 13 at the time and thought it was the most hilarious thing ever. I would put it well above "Traumschiff Surprise" in both popularity and (especially) cultural impact. It is very quotable - "Ich bin mit der Gesamtsituation unzufrieden" is one that stuck with me into adulthood. It should be noted that, while there are also nods to classic American and Italo western, it primarily parodies a specific brand of German western from the late 1960s, which was based on western novels written by German author Karl May. Those films, just like the novels they were based on, have always been quite popular in Germany and formed a vital part of German popular culture for multiple generations. There were alomst all centered around two main characters, a young Apache chief and a white guy who ended up becoming friends and even blood brothers with him. The main protagonists of "Der Schuh des Manitu" were very obvious parodies of those characters.

It is a bit like SNL but also has its very own character and many of the skits they created in the bully parade have been turned into full blown movies. So they have been parodising many different formats inside the bully parade and then they turned those into movies later on as they got a lot of traction. Cheers, mach weiter so

I admire your patience in watching such films and reading constantly. The special thing about the film is that Old Shatterhand and Winnetou and his gay brother speak Bavarian, unlike all the other actors. This creates a special humour that is probably lost in the English translation. Best Regards from Bavaria..😊😊

Seven year old me loved this movie so much that I asked my mom for an Abahachi costume for carneval. The creators of this movie are still making movies, most of them based on fan favourite recurring characters in the scetch show "Bullyparade" they created in the late 90ies. The guy playing Abahachi and Winnetouch, Michael "Bully" Herbig is the director, producer and writer of those movies. The most recent was 2017s Bullyparade - Der Film. Bully has also worked on more serious movies and childrens movies. He's even the German voice actor of Kuzco from The Emperor's New Groove, Fender from Robots and Woody from Toy Story.

The movie is a parody of all the movies based on the Wild West novels by Karl May. Mainly his most famous characters Winnetou (portrayed by Michael "Bully" Herbig as Apahachi and his twin brother Winnetouch) and Old Shatterhand (portrayed by Christian Tramitz as Ranger). The Greek Dimitri played by Rick Kavanian already existed in their TV comedy show Bullyparade as the host in a series of talk show sketches. His trademark is to get idioms wrong and switch the order of words in a sentence.

Few of our generation might not have seen that one... 😂😂😂 Indeed it was a parody of the German Winnetou westerns of the 60s with Lex Barker and Pierre Brice. As for the locations... Bully told in a making of that they shot around Almería, Spain, where Sergio Leone shot his 60s Spaghetti Westerns... 😉 I also know that they dubbed the movie in English for the international market, trying to capture the German humour, so maybe you can get your hands on that somehow 😊 Thanks for picking it, esp since its humour abt gay people is seen as rather inappropriate today... 🙈

I don't think I would have ever imagined a Scot reacting to Schuh des Manitu-Trailers! That is a hilarious mix of accents 😄 I don't know if you could truly get the movie without knowing the old Karl May movies about the Apache-chief Winnetou and his friend/bloodbrother Old Shatterhand. They are probably a staple for every German who's at least ... thirty? I'd guess. Anyway, bit of a long rant ahead and since you asked about whether there are still movies made like this: I don't know any recent German movie that plays around like that. It's tricky because you don't want to truly offend the original work (I mean...or maybe you do?) when it was a well-loved franchise or movie. Also, some jokes just didn't age well. One where it worked really well is the movie Galaxy Quest from 1999, which found the exact balance for absolute Star Trek fans, making lovingly fun of the tropes and the fans but not offending. If you never saw it, you should check it out. But it truly helps if you know the basics around Star Trek ;-) Which is another thing about parodies - you should know the basics of the original to get the most enjoyment out of it. Karl May wrote books about that imagined Apache-chief and Old Shatterhand and because it was the times of the times, the chief was a noble, thoughtful, great person because that was a bit of his trademark: creating "noble wild men" to teach the rough, mean, money-loving and bloodthirsty white men how to be better. It was easy black-and-white narration - good guys, bad guys, a damsel in distress (sometimes male damsels but usually accompanied by female ones) and the chief and his friend save everyone - yoohoo. It was very popular and even today, there's live-plays during summer in two places in Germany where the different books are acted out, with real horses and shooting (no real bullets) and all kinds of fun things to watch. So the writer, actor + director Bully Herbig had a TV-sketch-comedy show with two friends and it had a segment whith Winnetou and Shatterhand, usually making fun of the tropes from the original movies, spoken in Bavarian accents. They were a big hit on the show and so they wanted to make a real movie of it. But they weren't allowed to use the real names from the books (or maybe they didn't want to in the first place 🤷‍♂) so they called the main characters "Ranger" and "Abahachi". Abahachi is already a fun name because a recurring character in the original books was the half-Native American/half-white young woman named "Apanachi". I am unsure whether explaining the basis of the jokes actually helps to get them. *shrug* So anyway.

So to explain this we have to go far back in time: At the end of the 19th Century there was a German dude called Karl May (1842-1912), who wrote some quite succesful Western novels about the German Immigrant Old Shatterhand and his blood brother Winnetou, a Chief of the Apache tribe, who experienced many adventures in the Old West. He claimed that those books were based on true events and that he was Old Shatterhand himself. Meanwhile he never set foot into the US until he was an old man, long after he published his books. He actually was a conman in his youth and even spent some time in prison for it. Nonetheless his books were quite popular for many generations and inspired a series of movies based on his novels in the 1960's and 70's. Those movies were also quite popular and inspired Michael "Bully" Herbig and his ensmeble from the show "Bullyparade" to make a parody of those movies in the early 2000's, which is "Der Schuh des Manitu" and it became the most commercially successful German movie

The parody only tangenly aimed at the old western movies from the US. It was specifically aimed at a series of movies from Germany that put Novels by Karl May into movies. These novles were a romantisation of the Wild West by an author who basically wrote them on hearsay alone. The German movie series even at the time they were made were basically in the category so bad that they become good again. In our time and day we would consider them outragously dated (both novels and movies). But in the early 2000s out of Bully's audience pretty much everyone would know the source material he was makeing fun of.

Der Schuh des Manitou is a direct parody of an old german Westen production. There was a german writer by the name of "Karl May", who wrote quite a few books about the wild west. His books once were so polular in Germany that they made many of them into movies aswell. The most famous ones of those were the stories of Winnetou the Apache and his friend and blood brother Old Shatterhand. And THAT is exactly the visual style and the characters that is the basis of this parody. Huge parts of the movies back then were filmed in Croatia. A lot of the scenes in Schuh des Manitou were filmed in Andalusia instead, around the area, where "For a Fistful of Dollars" was filmed aswell.

Another little anecdote: When I first saw the movie, the main villain, with his mixture of elegance, arrogance and condescencion, gave me somehow "Argentinian vibes". Later, in an interview with Herbig, I heard that he had asked the actor in question (Sky DuMont), if he could ride a horse. He answered: "I was raised in Argentina, of course I can ride!" Later yet, I found out that's not true. He was born in Argentina and lived there until he was three years old, and honestly, that he would nevertheless claim to have been raised there is the most Argentinian thing I can think of.

The movie is actually a parody on the legendary German 'Winnetou and Old Shatterhand' movies of the 70s, which were based on the novels of iconic German adventure story author Karl May. He also did a whole serious of novels about fictitious German adventurer Kara ben Nemsi (Karl the German) and his helper Hadschi Halef Omar who travelled down to Arabia for several adventures. Karl May, born 1842, had never been to America or Arabia himself before he wrote these stories, which play in the mid to late 19th century. He still caught the imaginations of the readers though and sold around 200 million copies.

The movies comedy was pretty much like the Mel Brooks or Leslie Nielsen movies, with a lot of puns all the time, so you gotta watch it several times to catch all of them. The song they sing was the only one, because the bad guy (called Santa Maria) asked them if they have any last wishes and the effeminate brother spouts out "The song from the super perforator advertisement", which seems to be a special kind of bullet. The guy who made is, is currently doing a sequel to it, called "the canou of Manitou"
