My opinion, long before Brexit was: Stop troublemaking and No opt outs or out. Brits chose "out" which was sad, but better then keep on scrounging. Then, the years long Brexit-debate in Britian was only about money which told everything you need to know about the Brittish attitude. I love the fact that they used „Peter Paul and Mary“ because that’s paying homage to one of Germany’s greatest comedians ever. A man named Otto Waalkes, who is a legend within German comedy at this point used these names for funny stories which he told in english and then translated to German in a way that the words used sound like their German equivalents but it created another meaning to these stories that ranged from silly and funny to straight up dark

The "cleaning woman" Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was Merkel's successor as leader of the CDU. She had been Minister-President (aka Prime Minister) of the very small federal state of Saarland before, and she was thought to be the next chancellor candidate of the CDU to succeed Merkel, but she already resigned after only one year as the head of the party. The "cleaning woman" was her custome for a political carnival show, which became infamous because she made jokes about transgender toilets and people wanting to have another gender on stage in that custome.

For the UK people in this chat, we should explain the desaster: - The sailing ship Gorch Fock was originally built in 1958 for the costs of 8.5 Million D-Mark (roughly 4.3 million Euro, not considering inflation); - In 2015, it was decided to work it over for an estimated total of 10 million Euro; given the history of the ship and the loss in purchasing power a reasonable price; - In 2017 the estimated costs skyrocketed to 75 million Euro; - A few months later, in March 2018, the estimated costs were already at 135 million euro; - the wharf wich had taken the contract went bankrupt over this renovation; - In September 2021 the restauration was completed and the ship was handed over again to the Bundesmarine for the costs of 135 million Euro.

I really like how you take German satire and German humor. Usually, Germans have a reputation of being quite humorless and stiff among many people from other countries. Spoiler: this is not true ;) Anyway, the "heute-show" is a gem of a political satire. The host and all the other comedians who appear on the show are, in my opinion, the best in our country. I, as a German, am really pleased that this show and the satire in it, which fluctuates between subtle and brutal, is also well received outside Germany. The whole "German Aircraft Carrier"-thing just came at the perfect moment. The German Navy owns an old traditional sailing ship, the Gorch Fock, and it had to get maintainance - what became a total mess... in the end it took them 6 years, cost millions of tax money and was just another embaressment for the german Army and Ministry of Defense. And while this was happening, the Secretary of Defence talked about the great idea to build a CV meanwhile they cant repair a 100y old sailing ship. (and yes I know, the real issue was the bureaucracy bs and some corruption, not the missing skills or knowledge - but still, pure Comedy)

I'd assume you've never seen work on wooden hulls or masts in a shipyard, because it's not like replacing a wooden board in your table. It might also have played a role, that A LOT of shipyard time frames in the navy were pushed into the unknown future for decades, because too little money was allocated. Yet the ships and boats were expected to deliver very high service hours. It doesn't take a genius to realize that this might be bad. It should also have been pointed out in ARD media, because they themselves are not exactly suffering from too little money. Now, why would you think there was this oversight in reporting for decades?

Greetings from Germany 🤗 Very enjoyed your video and how you percieve our Heute Show! It would be very difficult to explain to foreigners how Heute Show works, but you're doing so good in understanding and explaining it! It's really a pity that the puns they made in this episode (where they translated German sayings into English) are hard to understand by foreigners - you guys would love it 😂 And just in case some viewers need to hear it: We like British people very much, you are welcome here and we hope that we are still welcome in your country ☺️ We just brag about the Brexit itself, because it's honestly very chaotic and - in my opinion - a little bit unneccessary, so we want it to be over (but it's taking so long, thanks to British and EU politics). Germans express feelings like these by a kind of "humoristic/satiric shittalking" against everybody who is involved, but in reality we don't mean it that way 🤗 (Well, some of the Germans sadly do, and they say that very loudly, which makes it look like many people don't like you, but in Germany we say "Nicht geschimpft ist genug gelobt" which means "Not being criticized is enough appraisal" - so, since the vast majority of Germans don't criticize you, they like you very much 😂)

Half of the jokes are also side-punshes to german things, like our millitary is quite famous here for not working - at all - and the "saarland" is a tiny part germany that is like - lets just say it does not exist. I don't think germans are so direct, but german commedy definitely is. Thats the fun about commedy, this in-your-face mentallity. We also have this stupid commedy, but we also have this amazing "politisches Kabarett", which uses commedy as a way to spread education. My personal favourite is "die anstalt", but its very difficult to understand the meta-layer, even speaking german. Overall, keep doing this, and keep spreading the contents to a international public. I appreciate your attempt to get a closer view into german minds or german thinking - that's absolutely impressive. Your way via german comedians or political entertainment by comedians may be a clever move because they do also explain us germans sometimes, what we may not see, deny or refuse to see in general or in particular contexts. The view from an external position often depicts flaws you'll never see when inside the mass. The comedian from his position is also extern somehow. You have asked for different and more performers to learn more about german minds: If you want to get deeper in this categories of german humour, reflexions and "education via comedy", you should not miss the famous Vicco von Bülow aka "Loriot" and his views around. An oldschool comedian without the very comedyish attempt, more an academic attempt in different styles: dialogues, role plays/scenes, monologues and cartoons. His program has been famous and much-loved from the late 1970ies until 1990ies. Clearly and slowly spoken and always presented with a sympathic touch of diabolic smile in his face.

While i rarely watch TV nowadays, this guy from the "heute-Show" you just watched is just great, he sprinkles comedy in serious topics, makes them interesting and fun to listen to, and mostly he talks plain and simply facts. And yeah, Germans are pretty direct but it also varies from are to area: lets say you messed up at work, your supervisor or someone else will say to you "Hey man, you meesed up there", while in the area i grew up in its more like this "hey, you f*cked up!" It varies from "calm to Severe seriousness" xD

The self depreciation reminds me when the multimational NATO maneuver "Air Defender" was on in June.... We had British helicopters over (amongst all sorts of foreign forces) and they were practicing formation flying. Two colleagues watched them when one said: "Aren't they flying a bit too close together? ...Our pilots don't do that." The other one responded bluntly: "That's actual military right there, you know."

Saarland on the otherhand is a forested, southwestern German state bordered by France and Luxembourg. Named after the Saar River, a tributary of the Moselle, Saarland is considered part of the greater Moselle wine region. Thats why wrote Saarlafisten instead of Salafisten.

I think some of the jokes were so harsh because they were fueled by bitterness. Deep down even when Germans and other Europeans said they were just fed up with brexit taking so long and Britain should just get it over with everyone (at least the ones who support the EU) still wished they'd somehow change their minds about the whole thing. It was quite painful to watch a powerful trading partner and "cultural ally" leave, especially during times in which only a unified Europe can hope to still be seen as a global player. There have been multiple forces, many of which supported by foreign powers, who only want to cause friction among Europes nations to ultimately "divide and conquer" and it was worrying to see their tactics work.
@JayJayInDaZone

Industry and trademanagement in the EU may be bitter, population not so much ;) All people I know just said "Why don't they leave already and stop whining?". What would a single person in the EU would've gained, if the British stayed in? We just felt sorry for the nearly 50% that would've wanted to stay. Everyone in the EU knew, that Britain didn't pull they weight in the EU. They mainly took. That's not how it works. That's why the owned a huge amount of money to the EU. (Oh well, we were sorry, Scotland left)

They chose that specific image, because it is a visualization to a play of words, that they didn’t even try to translate. „Hängebrittten“ is half way brits, half way breasts that gave in to age and gravity. Because it’s at the same time a comment on the Brits not making up their mind, it fits what he wanted to say, while being a play of words. 😅
