Encountering your soul as a bird at night, telling you that your body is just a cage where he lived before and your pain may have been eased but you're still not free....i just 😭 maybe it is the bare minimum but this woman literally writes poetry in music form. Her songs sometimes dont even follow a "song structure". Just a poem with melody. I love her so much, she gets it. She's so real and raw 🥲💗 Her art is just....so special

This is what having harmful coping mechanism feels like. You long to do such actions since the pain is taking over, yes you are coping, you feel free, painless for a while but there's consequences you're never truly eased of the pain.

"Now I'm taken, the night has me You won't hear me singing, you're a cage without me Your pain is eased, but you'll never be free For now I'm taken the night has me" The way this send me spiralling. Portraying her own soul as a songbird leaving her body is so genius it should be studied in school

The way I thought the bird was someone she could share her love and soul with. But you totally got it. Her body is nothing but a limit to sharing her overwhelmingly hopeful soul, mentioned in Buffalo Replaced.

Gonna point out a thing real quick, apart from how good and soul wrecking this song is, I personally love how the drums in the end get to have their moment to shine. I’d always listen to heat lightning and feel so unsatisfied when the drums at the end of the first chorus stopped suddenly without evolving, but here they do and it’s so beautiful. Might be my favorite with Star, Buffalo Replaced and I’m Your Man ❤❤❤
@a_____456769 ай бұрын
In Heat Lightning, I personally see the drums stopping after the first chorus as consistent with the theme of the song tbh. The person has to hold themselves back from actually feeling and reaching out bc they decided there was nothing they could do to change unless the other person in the relationship did it first, if that makes sense. It's supposed to leave you with that feeling of insatisfaction as time just passes the subject by as a routine they have adopted Having said that, I also really like when the drums get their moment, and this last album is wonderful, so I definitely get your point 🤝❤

This song hits so weirdly. It feels like a somber reflection of my own actions that I took so long ago that I've already come to terms with the decision. For me personally, the idea of giving up your soul means giving up your emotions, something you felt you can't bear to keep any longer, something you willingly let go of thinking it would make you better, thinking that there wouldn't be any consequences of note, and that nothing bad would come of it. But instead, you gave up a part of yourself, a part of who you are as a whole, a part you can't get back, all so that you get the smallest bit of temporary relief from your own pain. Now, you feel like a part of you has died, like you're nothing but the soulless husk left behind in such a transaction. All because of how desperately you just wanted a moment of relief, even just a second. Like a deal with the devil, you gave up something so permanent for something so temporary.

I just aspire to be as emotional as this work, I love Mitski so much and I aspire so much after her, not in a worshipping way but just genuine admiration, I’ve been afraid of being so emotional since I can remember, I’ve been afraid of expressing exactly what I feel the way I feel it, with all the intensity, I’ve been ashamed of my emotions of my perception of the intensity of them all, of me.., I’m an artist not one with true meaning yet but.. since I met Mitski, god I feel like home, her music reflects such nudity that I just can’t help but cry, her lyrics or the melody every part says something, you can feel something what she’s feeling with it, I want the freedom of it, to expose myself raw thru art, I feel so insipired by her and now I feel a lot less ashamed about my intensity of feeling things, I want to stop being afraid, I hope one day I can become such a raw artist like her, that every drawing of mine speaks for itself and that helps people feel less alone too, I hope one day I can’t stop being afraid of throwing myself entirely to the world, I hope one day I can be “free”

The themes of defeat and surrender is so reveberant in this to the extent that one is willing to sacrifice the “better angels of one’s nature” because it is the last resort in order to subsist…when one finds no reason to do so. The deal, despite its consequences, gives one a will, a purpose, a meaning, or something, or merely anything. As Kafka has said, “I am free, and that is why I am lost.” at the same time, “I am a cage, in search of a bird.” Mitski’s depth, everybody.
