This reminds me a lot of Two Slow Dancers. The awareness of the inevitability of knowing the relationship won’t last and the love is fading but you stay together for as long as you can until the “last one's out”. In “Star” she knows that that the love she experiences is like a star as “it’s gone but we see just see it shining” in from the far future.

i love the church feelings going for this album so far with the organs in this piece too,, dont know if its an intentional theme or just a coincidence i picked out, but it makes every song seem so reverent and personal and whole, which is something ive always found with Mitskis music,,, the organs fluttering and stuttering near the end like stars twinkling is so beautiful

But my cat sadly passed away a few hours before the song was released. I needed this during that very early grieving process. this probably doesn't make sense and ik her discography doesn't necessarily have meanings and stuff, but i really just wanted to say what i thought abt this song when some stars die, we don't notice because of how far they are from us, so we keep seeing their light despite them having long gone. in a sense, i think this song portrays a broken relationship (platonic or romantic) by likening it to those. it probably ends up in a break up or distancing themselves from each other, but deep down you still feel love for them because they've been a part of your life, and they've have probably even changed you for better or for worse (you know i've always been alone / till you taught me / to live for somebody). the star (the relationship/connection) has died long ago, but the light (love) is still there because of the memories and emotions you've shared

I relate to this song in a way. I have had a very dear friend, who I developed a crush on over time. I'm pretty sure they had a crush on me too, though I'm not fully convinced - we were both socially awkward middle school kids, but we both had a strong connection with eachother. Even after a couple years, when they found a friend group I wasnt a part of and we drifted away, we were both trying to hold on to our friendship, something that was nonexistent, but a memory. Eventually we stopped talking as I moved to another town pretty far away, but I remember them very fondly. I miss you.

Listening to the lyrics, it feels like remembering and reminiscing about memories with a special person (romantic sure, but also platonic too). You can feel the love you had for being with that person but you’ve lost them to time or something of that nature. Ok y’all I know I’m four months late but I just wandered onto this song and holy shit is music suppose to make you feel this way? I always just listen to music with catchy beats because I don’t relate to any lyrics of “sad sounding songs” because they’re all about romantic love (which I haven’t experienced) but this made me cry. I had a childhood friend who I cherished very much and she taught me exactly this “how to love for somebody” I had no friends and didn’t know English and she taught me love, the special thing is that her room had these glow in the dark stars above it. So we would look at them during sleep overs and fall asleep together. The last time I saw her we were having a sleepover (I came back after two years of moving away) and she cried about her problems and and I hugged her so tightly and lovingly in a way I never had, and so we sat together silently crying under the stars, which makes this song so relatable to me. Though the star has died out for a couple of years I wish for it to come back sometimes, maybe I’ll reach out to her, see how she’s doing.

I know this song probably means something else but I really have a deep connection with this song towards my best friend, we talk about how this is our song from every single lyric, two young kids meeting and connecting after being so alone just wanted someone, the lines ‘remember when we met, we acted like two fools we were so glad, so glad to have found it’s we met in 6th grade both incredibly lonely kids who found each other at rough times and we were so glad to have found one another, and the other line ‘you know i’ve been alone ‘til you taught me, to live for somebody’ i was so incredibly depressed and suicid@l since i was young so when i met her i knew i wanted to keep going with her and stay by her side. and obviously the rest of the song just feels like the type of love we have for one another, so yes it might mean something else but it just feels so close to home, we are now seniors graduating side by side when we never thought we were gonna make it. I love you Mitski 🩷
