Creepy Time Limits 12 - Pikmin 2's Submerged Castle

The twelfth episode.
Time limits. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. I like to take my time when playing video games, enjoying the experience at my own pace. But the moment I'm told that I'm going to be working against a timer, I can't help panicking. I'm thrown out of my comfort zone, and even the easiest tasks become tough to accomplish. Sure, it's good to be thrown out of a loop from time to time, and there's nothing wrong with a variety of challenges, but I always want the scary timer section cleared as soon as possible and move onto something else a little tense. In this series, I take a look at timer sequences in games that got to me the most.
NOTE: In cases where bad endings and scary timers overlap, (Example: Bad ending requires a timer to run out) Creepy Bad Endings will win out, and the video will be a CBE video.

I know this detracts from the scariness a little, but you can evade it by hugging a wall. It chases you on a series of set routes that are always down the middle of hallways, so as long as it’s not making a turn or getting stuck/bumped by something, you can use the whistle to squeeze your army against the wall to be perfectly safe until it’s a safe enough distance for you to book it.

As someone that has done glitchless speedruns of 1 and 2, I’ll defend caves. I argue that they switch the focus of the over world (mostly time with some resource) to underground’s focus of resource over time. You need to maintain your troops to successfully pick up every treasure in one go, staying aware of the restock options present and what the best course of action is. It provides a nice mix to the gameplay, bad layouts not withstanding. There’s a reason it’s my favorite of the trio.

I just realized: The Water Wraith, on the floor when you fight him, the Pikmin don't seem to actively attack him and rather stare blankly when he's in invincible form. Only when you throw the purple Pikmin to make him physical do they actually run towards him. Maybe like the game said, he is in a physical form somewhere else or a hallucination ? Can the Pikmin even see the Water Wraith in that form?

Pancake_Eaters10 There is a boring mechanical answer to this that I'm going to explain for those curious, but I love your in universe explanation! That's a good way to explain the difference in behavior given the information we have! Anyways, Pikmin only run toward something if there is a target within their attack radius they can lock onto to damage. When the Water Wraith is in his clear form, there are no active points the Pikmin can lock onto for damage, likely to make fleeing easier.

The pikmin " " "lore " " " completely revolves around the water wraith too, as it appears in various forms throughout every game (He's even the final boss in Hey! Pikmin.) It really adds to the mystery, makes me think that one video about the Umibozu might not have been so far-fetched.

Technically those aren't the Water Wraith. The theory is that they are all the same, or at least related... but it has yet to be proven so far (just to clarify for those less in-the-know about Pikmin lore).

I think the reason the waterwraith is so much scarier than stuff in a lot of survival horror games is cause it hits you with a secret weapon. Loss of control. By the time you get to the submerged castle you likely feel you’re pretty decent at the game. You’ve gotten all the pikmin types, cleared a good amount of caves, seen all the elemental hazards, faced off with a few big scary bosses. Maybe you’ve even seen bulbmin before and know that they make caves they’re in a ton easier. And then this… thing drops from the sky, and you’re told in no uncertain terms it is invincible. The music flares to dramatic boss music and you’re left with two courses of action. Run, or find out for yourself that the thing is in fact invincible. All that experience you have and control you’re used to is ripped out of your hands and tossed into the trash. Meanwhile in a lot of survival horror games, you never get to actually FEEL like you’re in control of the situation, not until the very end at least. This is because the game devs know that if you have too much control over a situation, the “horror” part of “survival horror” goes away. So when this shit happens in those games it’s more of a “oh a new scary monster appeared out of nowhere again, better run away again”

By that logic the only other wraith we know of, the Plasm Wraith, should also follow those rules when he is in his "invincible" form.

My first encounter with the wraith was awful. I’m a hardcore Pikmin fan so I knew about the wraith when I was playing. So when I went into the submerged castle, I knew what to expect as I wasn’t doing a blind play through. However When I went on the first floor...... I didn’t know he spawned on the first floor. When he spawned I was shocked as I didn’t know that, but I didn’t care as I knew all the tricks to avoid him. However when he dropped down as he spawns in a random location. I noticed something familiar. There were 2 geysers, a little pond, and an egg..... the same egg I was trying to break...... The water wraith spawned right on top of me. Killed almost all my Pikmin. I was also to make things worse doing a no-death run. So that was icing on the cake. Wonderful experience with the submerged castle.

Pikmin 2 scared me a lot as a kid, gave me nightmares.. The day time limit was the definition of anxiety, and the creepy music in the underground sublevels kept me on edge, and the fear of all your pikmin dying due to one stupid mistake or a boss killing them all. The game still creeps me out a bit today, but I love it. Can't wait for Pikmin 4.

Okay... You are definitely not alone. When I was younger, pretty much every game that I played that had bees that were actually realistic in them terrified me! Super Mario Sunshine, a good chunk of the Legend of Zelda games, Banjo Kazooie... I think my worst experience was trying to go through Cannon Island in Phantom Hourglass. So many fricking beehives...

Pikmin 3 has it's own time limit as well, albeit one you can extend by finding fruit since the Drake has it's own oxygen supply and the Koppaites just need more food. Also there's the Formidable Oak where the Water Wraith's more fearsome and dangerous relative the Plasm Wraith, the creature responsible for all crash landings on the planet that also is intent on keeping Olimar until he perishes, resides and will chase and devour your pikmin if you try to take Olimar from it.

I mean, technically, PNF-404 has plenty of Oxygen. They actually have to wear the space suits because of how much Oxygen there is... roughly 3 times more Oxygen than Koppai.

One thing I found most useful for that cave was cheesing him (he can't make some turns or enter some corners) and making multiple runs. As long as you grab at least *one* treasure you're good, so you can make shorter runs per floor to avoid having to deal with him at all. Finding and leaving someone at the exit was also very helpful.

Ah, the Waterwraith. What an experience it was the first time I saw it. It really does well sending fear through players when it appeared. Pikmin 2 was one of the best Gamecube games I've ever played. I continued playing it even when I've got everything.to make up my own stories.

TBH Pikmin caves would work if they'd implement a day/night system where you can stay outside at night, but aside from there being a day limit to make that actually matter, more dangerous enemies and even roaming bosses could appear at night searching for food, that way they can keep the timer rolling inside caves instead of making it dissapear. That being said, long caves would be extremely stressful this way, remember Hole of Heroes? Or how about Dream's Den.

The Waterwraith returns in Pikmin 4, and it still lives up to being the scariest enemy in Pikmin, but they nerfed him significantly from the second game due to him not actively chasing your Pikmins anymore, opting for following a set path instead.

I would like to hear many examples of instant kill enemies that appear when taking too long, then feeling of death following you in pyshical form is known to cause anxiety, maybe. So was that creature real to begin with?

I think it’s actually bees in skate or die, but that’s interesting. Maybe another example is metal sonic, specifically from knuckles chaotic, stand still to long and metal sonic goes after you ( he’s not a instant kill though) A very old example is evil Otto from berzerk.

There’s also a certain failure screen that should be mentioned: the Pikmin extinction screen, when you lose all the Pikmin C.Olimar will look sad, go back to his with sadness and regrets, and blames himself while refusing to sleep. You do get one Pikmin from the onion and C. Olimar is sworn to protect it.

I’m guessing Nintendo heard the fans that wanted time to not freeze upon entering caves, so when they brought it back for Pikmin 4, they made it so time moves at about 1/6 the pace that it usually does while you’re in a cave.

I love the progression. Floor 1: Why's the music so creepy? Floor 2: What the fuck is that thing!? Why is there boss music on the second floor!? Why did they add horror stingers to it!? Why did the boss spawn while I was just sitting here getting treasure!? Floor 3: Where did it spawn!? Why is it killing the other enemies!? Why is it doing donuts right where I need to go!?

I'm also reminded of the game _720º._ It was released for arcade and the NES, but also had ports of the Amstrad, the ZX Spectrum, and the Commodore 64. Basically, the purpose of the game was that you had to compete in these skating events by going to one of four various locations while skating around to them in a hub area. Whenever you weren't in an event, a bar counted down the time remaining for to get to one. If time ran out, there would be this huge "SKATE OR DIE!" message accompanied by a swarm of killer bees. Once the bees showed up you still had a small amount of time with which to get to a park, but the longer you dilly-dallied the faster the bees became until they were unavoidable. Getting caught by the bees straight up ended the game.

Have you played played Persona 3 or Persona 5? There's an incredibly powerful Shadow known as The Reaper that shows up if you stay on a floor of Tartarus and Mementos too long. Like the Water Wraith, you'll be notified of The Reaper's arrival, but you won't know the location.

@@ronalddavidrojas5795 Yep. Worst of all, all three of the endings are bad, regardless if you meet the requirements for the good ending. As for the Creepy Time Limits, you know who. Also, Night Missions as of "Foot of the Stairs" add a new, even CREEPIER time limit.

i am not happy with the fact that i had to fight at least 4 of these in pikmin 4. i get one is technically optional but like.. jesus christ. let me 100% the game in peace (i did end up killing them. the sage leaf trials waterwraith was annoying as hell though)

A while back I dropped two and a half tabs and timed it so that I'd play this level when it climaxed because I knew it'd be exhilarating. It's not impressive or anything but I planned on getting every treasure regardless of if the water wraith appeared in a floor with as few pikmin lost as possible. It was a journey. I never really noticed how the stage hazards leading up to the wraith are designed to inhibit you until I played it that time- I thought it was really neat and it gave me a greater appreciation for the level than I already had. Sometimes I feel like the designers were just throwing things together on some floors but this is easily one of the most thought-out caves in this game It was probably just the trip but I also began to see the water wraith's mechanics as a sort of antithesis to the edge the pikmin give the captain- any freedom over the environment and the advantages it brings is taken away from you as you are confined to literal corridors and a steam roller (maybe I read into it too much, but the ship mentions if its form is anchored in another dimension in the first encounter and the water wraith's levels literally take away a spacial dimension, forcing you to run either forwards or backwards, until you fight him in a wide open arena where he's easily avoided). Every time he appeared, the most terrifying thing was keeping an eye in his general direction, knowing he could roll over half of my pikmin in five seconds while I carried treasure. I'd usually be left with maybe two treasures per level by the time he came- I was hustling at the start of each floor and bit the bullet when he came I remember there was one point when I realized one pikmin was alone in the middle of the map- I was so scared the wraith would roll over him and while I probably could've just ran to the geyser in the same amount of time, I decided that olimar was no coward, so I ran to call him back as fast as possible. I think that moment taught me a lot of the things I respect in a leader to this day lol I didn't really think much of the ending of the fight, but it did make me realize how terrifying the pikmin must be if they can overwhelm enemies just as quickly as the wraith can flatten them. Honestly, it made the environment feel all the more organic knowing that for a moment, the captain is not the apex predator. I did wonder why the water wraith flattens everything in its path, and I can only imagine its killing seems just as senseless to me as the captain's must seem to every creature you've slain thus far I finished the submerged castle having collected every treasure in one go, met the water wraith on every floor he appears, and I came out with 73 remaining pikmin (not including bulbmin) and a newfound sense of appreciation for the game thanks to this level. And acid. I had also forgotten that I saved the castle for when I cleared my debt so I was treated to both some nice visuals in the last cutscene, plus the gut-punching louie's lost scene, so that was fun too
