I messed around and hit my mom back on instinct when she punched me in the chest. There was that moment when she looked like she wanted to square up. We used to just get beat for everything. Sometimes it worked, but more times than not, it just made me mad that I got caught. So I would be smarter about it the next time. It really only worked when it came to stealing and lying. And that's only because they beat the shit out of me every time I lied or stole. I only stole twice, but I lied pretty frequently up until my teens. Then I stopped when I realized I'm too dumb to get away with it.

Nathan Oliver the wisdom in the text is discipline. God doesn’t advocate parents beating their children because after all he doesn’t do that to us. He chastens whom he loves and he uses discipline to correct us. Her point was through the lens of Christ being a good shepherd, the staff or rod wasn’t beating the sheep but to guide them and keep them in the shepherds protection

@aerybery
@aerybery 4 жыл бұрын
It's not accurate though. The Bible mentions the rod other times and it is specifically a correction tool and used for striking. I know they're several references in Proverbs. The staff was used for guiding, but the rod was for correction. There is even a verse that mentions not to get caught up in your kids crying about getting punished either. I can come back with the exact scriptures, or anyone could do a search. Hope that clears up the misinformation.

Brenda Jameson The Word is the Word, it doesn't change based on the culture. The Word is infallible and doesn't change to fit a person, we as people must change to conform to the Word. If you study a shepherd, he has a rod and a staff. Psalms 23 takes about the rod and the staff comforting us. The staff is to guide the sheep and the rod is to correct and discipline the sheep.

Personally, I feel like any form of discipline can be abusive if taken too far. Everything may not warrant a whoopin, but it does fit the "crime" sometimes. Kids need to understand the ramifications of their actions early, so it don't escalate. But they also need things explained, encouragement, rules, love etc...ya know actual parenting. Nothing is all the way left or all the way right. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I had whoppings as a child and the older I got the more I realized a whooping shows more about how impatient parents are versus how missed behave a child is! Whoppings are extremely traumatizing and doesn’t change children’s behavior whatsoever!

Morgan state Freshman yes, I feel like words get through to people more than violence. I always thought about the choices I made when I was younger based on knowing what my parents would say. I just understand some people have different parenting styles and I will not whoop my daughter no matter how frustrated I become.

The worst "creative punishment" I have ever had is what we called the jailhouse punishment. Anything that used electricity we were unable to use, mind you it was close to winter so bedtime was around 6pm. The only thing we were able to drink was water and the only thing we could eat was PLAIN bologna sandwiches and condensed chicken noodle soup from the government. (Anyone from Detroit and old enough knows it was called hocus hope lol) This lasted a week, my siblings and I NEVER had that punishment again 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ I was also this close 🤏🏾 to smoking a pack of cigarettes...my dad saved me from that.
