Never ever drive a car through a flood and I’ll explain why. If water gets into your combustion engine cylinders through the air intake or by other means the engine will be destroyed. The reason is quite simple; an air-fuel mixture is compressible, water is not and what you will do is break the con-rods that will, then inject themselves through the side of the engine and that is a new engine, that cost will likely exceed the value of the car and will not be covered by Insurance.

Most drivers eventually find this out, but in case you want to know now…number one, the air intake location, and two, electrics. I had a V70 volvo, drove briskly through a 5” puddle and it almost stopped, spluttering. I had a VW Passat 1999 estate and drove it over the river Cart in spate in Scotland,at a ‘ford’ location, and it didn’t skip a beat, good because it was dark and raining and there’s only room for one vehicle at a time. It is not the depth of the water. It is the water either overhwelming the air intake and that’s your engine out, or maybe electrics. The bow wave, is critical - high revs, low speed. Rub the clutch the whole way through, or first gear. Stopping, is a no-no, because of number three… …which is longer-term damage, so it’s really three and four. First, very few cars are truly waterproof at the chassis. Where the pedals have things going through, or a bunch of wires go through the bulkhead (steel plate separates the cabin occupants from the engine up front). All that stuff, they don’t silicone-seal the protective rubber grommets. Oh yes, and the electronics, the ‘brain’ in that VW, are right their below the driver or passenger’s feet, in a box. It may or may not be really totally hermetically sealed, depends if someone had it open before. Point is, lowest part of the inside of the car. You may think you got away with it - feel the carpet later that day or next day, is it wet? Maybe you didn’t. Point four - really long-term now - the wheel bearings. Some brake parts, etc. Wheels bearings have a rubber seal sometimes, or not. It may be waterproof, or not. It’s mainly meant to keep the grease in, and that’s not thin like water. Then there’s the unseen dangers under the water - the absolute classic, is that a jet of underground water has shot backwards through a drain, and blown the cover upwards and out. Not common. But, it’ll take your entire wheel. Other obstacles may have become submerged too, boulders kicked out of the way as someone more adventurous chooses a side-route like someone here did, mounting the pavement and verge to get higher ground. Not a bad gambit though. Once waters start to recede, those drains have been known to kill rescue workers, Firefighters have had their foot sucked in and the force then required to extract a rubbery booted-foot is more than their comrades could manage. So think about that before you go walking thinking it’s safe. I think that one was Hull. They do risk their lives, when a muppet gets in trouble, so remember that. A word on motorcycles. The air intake is often right under the fuel tank, and because their bow-wave is nowt usually, that is not a bad configuration. But, you are putting your cast metal crankcase through the wringer in thermal terms. It’ll be hot, and you douse it, bathe it, in 2 feet of water. Same for the exhaust (obvs, cars do this too). Suddenly going from hot to cold, and not uniformly, it’s maybe veering towards warped cylinder head territory, etc. Never had that happen mind you. The wheel bearings have the same weakness cars do - three years down the line, it’ll give out prematurely, possibly, or not. Brakes - probably dry out. Generally, high revving and low speed. And there is a limit for every vehicle, that no manufacturer tests on normal road-going vehicles. You may be the one to find it out! Maybe 5” like that Volvo, maybe 18 inches is ok, like on my Yamaha Divvie. But it’s better to turn around, and go another route, especially at night if there’s no help around. It’s not worth it, and your vehicle, is the next driver’s unseen obstacle - your electrics won’t hold out, so it’ll be in the dark. That’s a monster guilt trip waiting to happen. Take care all. [EDIT: Why do air intakes end up being the weak spot? Effectively, they are literally designed to scoop from the front. The idea is, as you speed up, your car needs far more extra power to do say 65mph than 55mph. So the air intake often tries to point forward, to use the 55mph or whatever, fast-flowing air, to blow down the air intake, gives more power, sort of for free. But, they usually point forward and are right behind that topmost grille on the front of the car. There’s no special blocking for that, the water just jets straight in and down the air intake. Then, the paper or whatever air filter, clogs with water, if you are lucky. This is like starving the engine of air, it dies. If water got past this point, and down the cylinders, it’s a whole other story. But, usually it can dry out in an hour or less, or you could even remove the clogged filter, to get you home, warm it in front of a blow heater and you’re fine. Saves waiting. Don’t hit a second pool of water though! Good luck.]

Just to remind you all newbies on the road, your car can’t be used as a boat. Even if you manage to pass through the floor of your car will be flooded and damaged

I thought I recognised the Slash and Mountsorrel Lane. My parents grew up in Sileby so I remember many trips to my grandparents trying to get through the flooding. I'm surprised so many of the locals still haven't learnt to drive through such conditions!

Why do people even risk driving through that water if you don't own one that is made for conditions like this?

The stupidity of some drivers is beyond belief. In deep water you drive slowly and don’t create a bow wave!

What's impossible to understand, is why they drive through in the first place. Go a different way, for F's sake!
