Tyler ... EXCELLENT videos!!! I have an '81 Scottsdale Chevy pickup original one owner (me) with the Rochester Quadrajet 4bl. I ended up buying a new carb (same type) and wanted to know all there was to learn about it ... and you completely explained all facets of the carb! I'm from a small farming community... retired to the nearest tiny town in rural Kansas. Thanks again!

I learned a lot thank you. I have a 1976 Dodge 440. Been having a hell of a time getting it started cold. Also after its warm when I try to start it after going to the gas station it cranks hard for about 3 seconds and then kicks in. I'm going to do what you showed on this video. I've rebuilt a lot of carburetors but never knew how to adjust the choke right. Everytime I had to rebuild one it was out of necessity so I am not an expert that's for sure.

I have a question but, first I wanted to say thank you for your videos. I have changed fuel injectors, diagnosed bad coil on plugs, and used computers to determine which oxygen sensor to change. Then I bought an 86 motorhome with a 454 and I discovered that it has a strange device under the air cleaner that apparently lets the gas into the motor? Anyway, thanks to your videos I was able to diagnose that the strange device is not working because it has a bad choke coil. I even know that it is the electric one! I even know that it is the electric one from california because it's riveted. But there in is my question. Can I drill out the rivets, tap the holes and replace it with a standard choke coil? I truly appreciate your videos. I wouldn't have been able to do this without them. THANX A LOT!!!!
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for a funny comment! Are you SURE there is power going to the electric choke? In later days GM started routing power through the oil pressure switch so that the choke wouldn't open if the key were turned to ON but the engine not started. In simple terms that means you have to start the engine, THEN use a meter to see whether there is 12v supplied to the choke. I've rarely seen choke coils fail. You can test them with an ohm meter between the terminal and the carb body to see if there is an open in it.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 10 жыл бұрын
The rivets aren't a California thing. They all were that way originally. In the field they can be drilled out and replaced by screws to enable adjustability. I'm not sure what you mean by standard choke coil. Heated by hot air you mean? The two types are nearly impossible to swap around. An electric choke WILL work well. My '83 Olds starts immediately, every time. As I mentioned, start with the basics and determine whether there is 12v being supplied to the choke first.

WhoSaidTyler Thanx for writing back. Yes, I did find twelve volts at the plug with the engine running. The choke moves freely by hand. It idles (even when warm) around 1800. When I open the choke by hand the idle comes right down to 800.When you say check it with an ohm meter do you mean basically see if there is current able to pass through the coil to the carb as a ground? Sorry, for the confusion on the standard choke coil. I thought there was a difference between how the California quadrajet worked its choke versus all the others. I did figure it for California based on your other video on how to read the numbers. Also, really well done!

@abigredmonkey If you mean that it runs too rich for a while, I had that problem with my Plymouth. You can bend the choke rod slightly so that it doesn't put as much force on the choke plate. Also check to make sure the pull-off is good.

Look to see if one of them specifically attaches to the secondary air door lever at the top. Sometimes one only affects the choke and one only affects the air door opening rate. That screw in there also helps fine tune the rate of apply/release regarding the vacuum break.

You rock! I've enjoyed your series learning about the Quadrajet. How do I put this lightly? Maybe you were seriously tired doing the 4 parter on chokes, maybe you were seriously tired and having a drink or two and fading away. As an old So Cal boy that raced 2-stroke motocross bikes for years, I always found it really helpful to understand a carb's intended operation and fundamentals before I tried to dial it in. I now feel I have solid background as I, as an older man, try to swap out a boat engine's carb with a quadrajet as it was always intended to have. As an old racer, I believed in fundamentally understanding how things are supposed to work as designed before tinkering - your videos give me a great introduction to the carb, and understanding it. Such a critical piece of overall performance. If others complain that your videos are too long, they don't understand that having someone tell you how to turn a wrench without explaining to you why to turn the wrench is not going to help them learn how to diagnose and male their own unique adjustments to there particular needs. I say bravo, and you get quite funny/colorful as you get looser from exhaustion(/drink?), but still impart ridiculous amounts of knowledge. If I were a TV producer, I'd say you need a show - needed knowledge wth realism and entertainment. Invaluable education, and I've enjoyed getting tired/(possibly relaxed from alcohol along the way with you?). Anyway, I will watch more of your videos - you obviously know so much about old cars, it's amazing, And I appreciate your saying "trust me, I've made this mistake before, avoid it". And dammit, you sound like you come straight out of Jacksonville, FL, where I lived for 5 years and mourn ever coming back to SoCal from. But that is another subject. Keep doing what you are doing - I appreciate it. You can't tell someone how to adjust non computer-controlled technology for maximum performance without giving the some background in how it operates, which you take the time to do. Invaluable. Thanks again.

Hey bud its me again I'm still having trouble I am a first time carb user. In that being said I bought a 79 Pontiac lemans 2 door coupe has a 231-2v v6 103hp 3.8l and has a Rochester Dualjet 210 #17058190 and the man was 80 years old said before you leave we have to adjust the electric choke. And in doing so I watched as he turned and turned pulled throttle turned back and forth and pulled throttle so now Im at a point to where were I live temp is warm right now but anyway when I start the car I hit the pedal 1 time turn the key the pump one more time just to make sure it will stay running and at that time the choke butterfly open and I don't have a Rpm gauge but I'm sure it will be 4000 I mean it is screaming so I push the peddle review it until is goes to about I don't know 2500rpm I put it in gear and if I hit that gas man stall. Then do it a second time its OK but the only way to just lower that insane idle I have to turn the air off or slide to heater and it will be OK but it's just chug o login. Then when I get home from work wait about 4 hours to cool down and take the air cleaner of and the butterfly will be at about a index finger open. I have watched almost all of your videos and I think all Quadrajet videos on KZbin I'm lost for words the carb is clean heat rising pipe is on I don't get it. To me you are the king of quadrajets and I really could use some advice here. Please I would very much appreciate it.. Sorry for the long story but on your videos u always say ask me anything so here I am..

Glad to help, but you have to help as well. You've watched all the videos, I presume including fast idle speed, chokes, etc. So, what have you FOUND wrong with your carburetor so far? For instance, next time it idles extrmely high, don't touch ANYTHING, shut if off and go directly to the carburetor and look until you see the reason the throttle is hanging open.

Hello WhoSaidTyler, I'm having a problem with my quadrajet's choke, I think. The vehicle is a 67 gto 400ci with a 4 speed. The quadrajet in this vehicle has a divorced choke. When the engine is cold, the primaries are not closing, which makes it very hard to start obviously. So I assume something is wrong with the choke. But I also have a hesitation when I stomp on the gas pedal when it's warm. I check the vacuum break thingy like you suggested on you de-bog vids, and it seems to be working. The oil doesn't smell like gas either.
@bigross1990
@bigross1990 8 жыл бұрын
Update. We've looked at it a little bit more, and it's not the choke. When you pump the gas and try to start it, one of the linkages seemed to be stuck. Tried to clean it up some. Seemed to break it free, and now the choke works fine. Don't know if it's a permanent fix or not. Still have a little bit of hesitation/bog when the gas is pushed down. Also had a bit of a back fire today, so the hesitation or bog might be due to timing issues, or improperly tuned carb, or some linkage is still sticky.

How can I wire up my electric choke on my Weber 32/36? Do I just need a 12V+ source to go to it when I cold start it? When I got the car, the electric choke wasn't wired up, and still isn't.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 11 жыл бұрын
Yes, 12v switched power, that comes on and goes off with the KEY. Some vehicles have ACCS terminals in the fusebox. Otherwise you may just have to investigate until you find a good source for 12 volts

Hey Tyler, great videos. I have a technical question if I may. And it's probably not such a smart question but I don't know about carburetors. If I set the choke coil so it is too rich will I be wasting gas? If yes, will it cease wasting gas or, will it go back to normal gas usage once the engine warms up? Same for the Idle screw. If it's idling a little too high is that a waste of gas? I have a 350 V8 so I can't afford to waste gas. Thank you in advance for your help. Many kind regards, Ernest
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 8 жыл бұрын
Ernest, any time you run an engine rich, it uses more gas. Same with increased idle speed. But, a carburetor is not a model of efficiency even on a good day. That's why they went to fuel injection. That's why I suggest setting the choke properly so that it "unloads" as quickly as possible without causing drivability problems.

Well what you need to understand about fast idle cams is that the choke element itself totally controls whether that works right or not. If the choke never engages then it never goes on fast idle. If the choke does not disengage then it never comes off fast idle. Sometimes you can also have linkage issues but in your case, I suggest checking to see what that choke element is doing. as the engine warms up.

Hi Tyler!!! Thanks four your videos. They are highly appreciated. Ive got a 318 with a Rochester dualjet ( im pretty sure that is what it is). It runs pretty good. But, it could use some adjustments. I've been watching your carb videos because I plan on pulling the air cleaner of this weekend and trying too straighten a few things out. So, before I get to, it I'm doing some research. At idle it smells like its running rich. When it is first started in the morning, 2 pumps on the throttle, turn the key...fires right up and runs smooth. But, as its warming up, the rpm's slowly creep up. To bring the rpm's down, I have to blip the throttle. Is this right ? The rpms creep up pretty high. Im pretty sure at the least I need to adjust the high speed idle screw. Sometimes I have too blip the throttle several times, revving the engine pretty high, to get the rpm's to drop. It just doesn't seem right. Anyhow, Ive you have any suggestions Id appreciate it. I see here that you have alot of people looking towards you for advice. If you dont get too my questions I understand. If you do, well then I thank you kindly. Have a good one Tyler. And take it easy !!!
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. The idle speeds up as it warms up because the choke is either adjusted too rich or the choke "pulloff" is bad. You'll need to identify which carb you have. Dualjet is a 2bbl rochester which was never used on Mopars. The 4bbl Quadrajet was. Once you ID the carb, there are good online resources which explain how to adjust chokes and how to test pulloffs. Blipping the throttle is normal, the choke being too tight(rich) would make it take more effort to knock off the choke with the pedal.

Hey Tyler, I picked up an 85 jeep cj7 with the 258 I6. The choke seems to be adjusted properly but as soon as the engine turns over the vacuum choke break slams the plate full open instantly not allowing it to warm up and thus the engine stalls or idles really rough until it warms up. Any ideas?
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 8 жыл бұрын
Yes. The vacuum break should be adjusted so that when it's fully retracted, it only cracks the plate open a small amount. That said, if it's actually able to open it that far, then you should check whether it's the right unit, whether the connecting linkage is bent or some other issue. It shouldn't do that, obviously. You may want to google some pictures of that carb and I bet you'll notice right away what's screwy with the break/linkage. Is that a 1bbl Carter YF ? They also used 2bbl Carters but Carter Carburetor quit the business in 1984.

WhoSaidTyler well I know my 79 cj7 I had years ago was a 2brl carter. Absolute garbage carbs in my experience. I went through several remand ones before I got one that didn't suck air from the side ports where linkage connects to the butter fly rods. Eventually I ordered a Webber designed for that engine and never cld get it adjusted properly but I Dnt have it anymore so back to this one. This one is a 2brl also but just assumed it was a carter since it looks the same other than it has way more California smog crap all over it. I will look in the morning to find out the make of the carb. Great videos by the way. They refreshed some things I had learned and hadn't used in years as well as taught me some things. I'm running a factory (freshly rebuilt) Q-jet on my 72 LeMans, it has an RPM intake, so there's no spot to mount a hot air choke, and I don't trust those cable operated remote chokes, so I have ordered an electric conversion kit, should be here any day. My question is this, if I let the car sit overnight or even for a few hours I have to bottle feed it just to get it started! The battery will usually die before I can get it going.....it absolutely MUST be 30 minutes to an hour later, once its warmed up it runs ok. Could this be caused by not having a choke hooked up right now? Mine is supposed to be here next week. BTW, I'm also originally from AL, what town are you from?
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 8 жыл бұрын
Scott, you'll need to put on your lab coat and play carb doctor, lol. From here it sounds like a really bad supply issue, but you'll need to to some testing. Have a GOOD fire extinguisher at hand at all times and preferably do this out in the driveway. 1. Next time the stage is set for you to have to ride the starter to death, go out with a good flashlight and look down the the carb throat while you work the throttle arm. You should see the accelerator pump squirt gas. If you don't, go inside, spin the starter a few seconds and look again. If you still have nothing, you will have to figure why. 2. Obtain a clean, small clear bottle, like a soda bottle. Disconnect the fuel line at the carb and direct it into the bottle. Go in and crank the starter a few more seconds. If you are leery of this step, you can pull off the coil wire so the engine won't run. IF YOU GET GAS into the bottle, then obviously you have something wrong with the accelerator pump, but I doubt this because if so you would have a bad stumble each time you hit the gas. If you still have no fuel flow, then the problem is elsewhere and not in the carb. 3. Obtain something like a small mower gas tank or something else suitable and patch it in to the supply side of the fuel pump. In other words, take the car tank and line out of the equation. Get it hooked up, safely, and see whether you finally have gas to the carb. If so, you know you have a hole in the line under the car somewhere, very possibly the rubber section over the axle, or the pickup in the tank is cracked. Either of those will prevent the fuel pump from priming. If that fixes your fuel supply issue, then I bet your excessive starting problems go away also. If you STILL get no gas, then you can be confident that the fuel pump is failing. They have small one-way valves in them and sometimes they stick open and won't prime. I know this is a fair amount of work, but it's essential you find out the PROBLEM instead of just guessing at it. Let me know how it turns out. BTW I grew up in Guntersville.

WhoSaidTyler thank you brother for the info.....after reading your reply and talking with others today, I am pretty sure my accelerator pump is bad. I do sort of have a stumble when I hit the pedal, once you get past it you're good. I need to check with the guy who rebuilt the carb to see if the accelerator pump was addressed. I'll be digging a little deeper, but I might have to call on you again later. Thanks again Oh, my wife has family up in Arab...

Hi -thanks for your videos and southern humor-great job! _ my 2 questions are after watching 1-4 of your rebuild videos an just now 1-5 of your auto choke videos amongst many others What I don't see anywhere is: (on the q-jet carb I am trying to use is from a early 70's OLDS carb # 7043250 to replace the chevy computer q-jet on 85 camaro with 700r4 trans due to eliminating computer) 1. How to assemble and position the the auto choke arms when you are assembling the choke housing-I took all apart to clean and have no clue how to reassemble the arms AND how they interact with the primary throttle shaft "arm" on the choke side. 2. I need to remove the accelerator "arm" (with TV cable connector also) from the chevy computer carb and also the OLDS carb and switch them so the cables will hookup properly to the camaro cables. I was thinking I could maybe grind around the flattened end of the primary shaft to get the arm off and switch em, and maybe have them tac welded to the shaft :. will that work?? What do you suggest?? -low on money. It would be great to see videos on these subjects as I cannot find any thanks Tyler you are doing a great service for many of us trying to DIY & save money
