First I want to say, I love watching your videos. You make the beginning woodworker feel like they can accomplish anything with minimal skill and minimal tools. I have question though. When you make these trees with cedar pickets, what do you do about the inconsistencies in the thickness of the wood as you go? I don't see you sanding them. Do you just let them go as they are? I was thinking about running them though my planer after they are built but thinking it may rip them apart. This will be my first attempt at this type of thing and would hate to screw something up. Any advice you might have would be greatly appreciated. Also, thanks for the free plans for everything you do. I am going to attempt some of the other stuff you make soon. Gotta build me one of those 60 degree jigs...lol. Thanks!
@WhosTheVoss2 күн бұрын
I left mine rustic, mainly I wanted to see how many i could make with a picket. Sometimes the pickets are different thicknesses, sometimes the spacing needs adjusted. The planer would explode these if you ran them through after assembly :/ cedar is a porous wood, the sander with an 80 grit paper will do the job pretty quick :)

as someone who has been working with wood, metal and solid surface for decades, at a very high level, i will tell you that THIS is the kind of guy you want to be learning from and finding inspiration from. He loves it. Now, where this young man, and every other young man and novice need to improve, is in SLOWING DOWN and BEING RIDICULOUSLY CAREFUL. Of course, the guys who taught me were commonly missing multiple finger digits and had other stories, as do I, now. Im saying, i would hire this guy in a second and i love his passion for the craft.

You can use any thickness of wood, just keep in mind that these are 1/2" thick, so you might have to alter the plans so they fit together correctly. I dont have the measurements for the necklace tree but heres a printable PDF of the little guy :) docdro.id/8AILkBK

It has the plans for the jig, and Ill do a walk through as to how to set it up, its pretty simple to throw together, anddd makes building these trees a breeze
@harlihollandharris8520 Жыл бұрын
This is probably really simple, but can you explain how you painted the edges? I LOVE that look. Did you tape & spray paint? Carefully use a brush? Paint before or after assembly? thanks! Love your channel!
@WhosTheVoss Жыл бұрын
I used a paint brush and the little paints you can get at Walmart, touch the bristles in the center and drag them off the side. Leaves a clean edge of paint. I paint them after assembly/sanding. :)

Quick question. What are the “little slivers” called that you referenced at the end of the video? I’ve not found any poplar or oak that cheap at the big box stores.

Just cut and build one, and see if it works. I wish I had 3d modeling capability, I wouldn't waste it on little trees!
@tomilipin13 күн бұрын
@@richardmccann4815 That's what I did. It seems there's a mistake in the plans. Piece no. 1 is exactly 3.47 inches long, and piece no. 2 is exactly 2.89 inches long. I've built several trees using these dimensions and everything lines up and fits perfectly. Again, I would happily share the 3d model and a printable PDF file.

@WhosTheVoss Жыл бұрын
Cost times two is general rule, however, these cost around 50 cents each. Lol, the cedar ones from the picket I would say maybe $7-$10 each, the nicer poplar/oak ones that I stain and paint are $40 for the set of three. Check around and see if anyone has them for sale, or Etsy is an okay place to check: just because they are listed at a certain price doesnt mean they are selling any :P Good luck!! :D
