I took a Marlin 1895 guide gun white tail hunting. I used the Hornady 325grn FTX round. I sighted in at 100yrds. I took a 150yrd shot on a big buck thinking there would be minimal drop. I was wrong. The shot dropped quite a bit and was not clean. I had to track the dear for about a mile. Barrel length, ammunition choice, and proper load testing at all ranges are critical. With a short barreled .45-70, 50yrds makes a surprising difference.
@NoSmileification11 ай бұрын
Did you not practice with the round first? That's incredibly irresponsible and just plain stupid. Plug the round into any ballistic calculator and even with a 18 or 19" barrel it would only be roughly a 4" drop at 150 yard with a 100y zero. You should have made that shot with a little compensation. A 125y zero would have been point blank +/- 2.5" out to 150y, and a 150y zero would put you at 3.2" out to 175y. All better zeros than 100y.

My Marlin GBL is perfectly happy with the 325gr FTX. Roughly 1 to 1.5" groups at 100yds. My dad's early ported 1895G would clover leaf with them. I just found out the hard way not to leave a spotting scope on the bench when touching off a ported, short barreled 45-70.

Fort Scott, huh?! Yeah, this ammo’s not cheap. When you figure a “long shot” of 200 yards, a .625” group at 100 yards is necessary. A lot of people say putting a scope on a lever rifle takes away from the historical look. Personally I think if those who used them back in the 1800's had the technology and ability to mount a scope on their lever guns we would be looking at a different history.

Rarely do you ever have to shoot more than once at a deer so that first shot you had with each type of ammo is your impact point as you will be shooting a cold gun. Until I had private property where i could take my time at the range i never realized just how much point of impact could change after just one shot. I have a 450 bushmaster that is dead on and i mean dead on at 100 yards on a cold shot but subsequent shots shifted 4 inches high and 3 inches left. Once i could wait 15 minutes between shots i could see that first shot was the correct shot and the rest were a warm barrel grouping. Just something to think about.
@vonhurtig22 жыл бұрын
I've had this huge problem the last couple of months. Not until some weeks ago i figured out why my 26 inch CB wasn't accurate. I kept sending 5+ bullets through a smoking hot barrel. Mounting a peepsight on the receiver made it even worse. The deviation difference from heat is absolute massive... At 100 yards, it could be as much as half a yard, sometimes more. For my 1895 SBL, it shoots everything gladly, round after round. But the CB is sensitive, needs time to cool off. To make things worse, it only eats expensive ammo. It hates handloads no matter what powder or bullet weight. You have to sight in a rifle at the temperature it should be shot. More likely a cold barrel, maybe even a follow up shot. Let it cool, clean it out. Shoot as you would have when you are gonna hunt.

I personally have had great luck with those evolution bullets in 30-30 That 250 grain load might do better on deer Enjoyed the video as always
@joeymangum17233 жыл бұрын
Hey brother it's more so of a cold bore shot than a fouling shot. The temperature of the barrel effects the impact of the shot by how tight the barrel grabs the projectile and with hot and cold it it expands and contracts. So the longer you weight between shots the impact will be different. So when you stop between different ammo types and talk then fire one it will hit in a different spot than the next 2or3 that are going down a hot barrel. Same thing of you set And shoot 50 rounds your barrel will get really hot and your groups will open up. Love the videos keep up the great work man love it!

It's not that people don't like the scope itself, it's that some don't like a scope on a lever action. This peeve is carried on by people that were blessed with good eyesight their entire life. The lever action purists that feel a scope on a lever action is like mustard on cereal. Fouling shots are for a recently cleaned barrel and yes, they are important, especially when testing expensive ammo for accuracy. Going forward I'd use the not-so-good-shooting ammo here for your "fouling' shots after cleaning your bore before a hunt. I'm more impressed with the newer Marlin's ability, made a believer out of me that this lever rifle can shoot. Good stuff WTW....thanks

That is why, when hand loading, you "work up" the load and try different brand and weight of powder. All the "factory" loads have differing powder, load wight, and bullet. Rifle barrels have a "vibration harmonics." and EVERY barrel is different. It is important to find a load that most closely matches the barrel.

I can tolerate the Hornady Leverevolution in 325 grain. It is a proven game getter including big moose. It starts at over 3000 ft.lbs of energy and has a higher BC than other rounds. I would choose the Leverevolution over Federal all the time. I have never been impressed with anything Federal except their primers are reliable. The Hornady brass is a problem for reloaders because the case is about. 002" shorter than Winchester rounds making it hard to crimp unless you use Hornady dies. Federal muzzle energy is 2200 ft.lbs which is pathetic. Their new Hammer Down ammo made specifically for lever guns is also low in energy. I really enjoyed the video. I love the .45-70 although it is way too much gun for deer hunting. In states that allow only straight walled cases I think the .350 Legend is about the best round for deer. My grandsons smoked both of their big bucks with the .350 Legend. It may look puny but it has a crushing punch.

Excellent recording and I Agree! When I hunt, I always do an autopsy on any game, one of the reason, most people to not like to hunt with me. A GSW (Gun Shot Wound) is a GSW, and they always tell a story! Hopefully here in Oregon they won’t BAN my rifle as an Assault Lever Action! I have a similar rifle version that I bought in Alaska for Grizzly protection. Mine is SS, though draped in cloth, neoprene and tape camouflage. It also has factory porting. In Oregon I’ve used it to hunt black tail deer x 2 years. I got a really nice large 3x3 this year and my only complaint / concern, is that the round completely punches through the animal with little or no deformation. It’s fine with Excellent shot placement, but, as in humans, I prefer when the round deforms, has no core-jacket separation and dumps a large percent of its energy before Exiting the body. Where I’m hunting, I’m next to 300 acres of heavily forested, thick Oregon woods, owned by a strong ANTI-HUNTER, < 50 yards away. If the animal runs down the hill, across our shared private driveway and onto their property “Don’t even ask!” That happened last year. I used my R-P 405 gr Core-Lokt Flat-Nose round, sighted at 100 yds with 1.5” group. Shooting down a very steep hill with the animal angled up hill, my 1-RP round, punched through the scapula with a Perfect hole, took out the Thoracic Aorta, Thoracic Vertebrae, Spinal Cord and proceeded in a downward trajectory to Exit through a Rib. The Entrance Wound in the scapula was = Thoracic Vertebrae Exit Wound = Rib Exit Wound . The animal jumped and landed on its back, with legs in the air ➡️ DOA to X. Next year I’m going to switch to your top performer for Accuracy, since I think that’s the Most Important Factor (Shot Placement). I may experiment a little with bullet expansion though. This 405 gr R-P Flat-Nose would be a great round for Grizzly, or Buffalo, but not a large black tail deer. Dr. Hull,MD

Did you notice that the best groups were shot with non-lead ammo? Ammo is kind of sometimes rather iffy, have you considered adding a bullet chronograph to see how consistent the powder loads are on a foot per second average? I wonder how the Fort Scott 300g Solid Copper and the Hornaday 250g FTX both perform at 200 yards? Fifty-bucks a box for 45-70 solid copper 300g is pretty pricey but if your rifle really likes eating that the best, then feed it what it likes. Ammo prices have just gone off-the-rails, have you ever considered reloading?

I have one scoped and one with aperture sights. Love them both. Have taken a number of pigs with the open sight gun. Longest shot 125 yards. Have not taken game with the scoped one. My advice would be try to mount your scope lower on the gun if able. That is the perfect scope for that gun, for a conventional mount. Something about that micro grove rifling is finicky. If I recall hard cast bullets give best accuracy. There’s a good reason why Ruger ditched that type of rifling.

Dont waste your money, I did it for you. 😮

Wow the accuracy of the fort Scott munitions 45-70 is hard to ignore. My only concern is I've never seen a performance review of the 45-70 TUI product and the addition of a meplat or flat point on this projectile to make it tubular magazine friendly seems to be helping stabilize it. This concerns me since most TUI ammunition is pointed which helps the ogive destabilize the projectile upon impact hence the name Tumble Upon Impact. Another concern of mine is ammunition designed to tumble or yaw often doesn't penetrate very straight you might fire a good shot but not hit the vitals your aiming at. So I think you may get a repeat of the FTX failure you've already experienced while hunting. On the other hand the Winchester was sufficiently accurate and is field proven all across the continent as a good deer round. Also the Winchester 45-70 load is one of the few rounds in 45-70 that's cheap enough to actually shoot. Personally I mostly look to 45-70 for its simplicity. Get some bullet casting molds and cook up some hard-cast hollow points then load them yourself. Though I must admit videos on handholding get very few views since most people are interested in the latest and greatest factory loads.

I don't think the all copper round will expand very well so I would go with the Hornady 250 grn. would be best for the kill.

Check there TUI out it does more damage than hollow points. I've shot hogs with it big difference.

My Henry shoots the Lever action 250 Hornady’s the best. Never tried the Fort Scott.

Thanks for the review. My Marlin seems to like the fusion. I have the 26” octagon barrel.

I like the checkering design on your grip and forearm, “Beautiful” I agree the scope can’t be beat for accuracy long shots. My eyes too are not the greatest now. It’s like a blurry double looking through the semi Buckhorns although with up to 75 yard shots I can still hit bullseyes with the irons but anything out farther, I am considering putting a scope on mine.

I shot a few whitetails with fusion .308. They are lethal from near and far. I've shot Lever Evolution in .444. They are also drop dead lethal.

I recently purchased a Marlin 1895G ported barrel. I haven’t shot it yet. It would be nice to try different rounds before buying a $50 box

thanks! have only shot my 45-70's with my handloads in cast 300 gr and 405 gr. i don't load mine very hot or you wind up making it no fun to shoot, especially with my henry single shot light weight carbine!

I've got the SBL trim and I am totally impressed with the hornady 250 grain, thats a sweet group. I load so I know what goes into the hornady by means of components, I'll be trying them out! I haven't seen fort scott up here in Alberta Canada otherwise I would try it too.

I was surprised to see the Hornady flextips shooting low. I run them in my 336 Marlin and have great results on whitetails. These should go further and have more more foot-pounds at distance . Yes/no?

Wish you would have tested those 405 grain Remington bullets. Unreal in my guide gun.

WTW is your Marlin a microgroove barrel or is it one of the new ones with regular rifling? Mine is an older microgroove barrel and it shoots 330gr cast hollow points best.

So I won a trip to Africa to hunt a warthog,Impala and a blesbuck. I wanted to take my 4570. Would you recommend the fortscot ammo? I have one box right now and wonder if I should sight my gun in with it
@Daniel7.623 жыл бұрын
Have we done a bullet drop with the 45-70 yet. If not then maybe soon with the fortscott ammo would be nice

I got the same results with the Hornady ammunition but I was switching to non lead last year. I picked up a box from Buffalo Boar and it shot better then the .250 grain Hornady.

Can you throw some of them Lehigh defense deep penetrator rounds out there for accuracy. See how they match up to the rest of em.

You didn’t answer my question in the last video, but answered it in this one. I was wondering why you didn’t like the performance of the Hornady FTX lever revolution and now I know why. I really appreciate that and I would love to get a similar 45-70. For hunting Ohio, and for hunting bear 🐻 and wild boar 🐗 wherever
