We need a comparison of your home made aluminum balls vs wild caught aluminum balls that have been toughened by nature. Now that would be a really fun video. It’s pretty rare to find one wild aluminum ball let alone two, so that’s going to be a tall order. Good video W-T-W !

Looking at the box and the foil balls I'm going to guess that the shot went low, blew out the bottom of the foil and the top of the box and pushed the second ball back, see the flat spot on the second one?

Ya, 30-30 is a fun round... a lot of lore surrounds it. not to mention there too much attention to ballistics today, not that its a fun pursuit but, "He who eats" has a weapon that works! the rest is marketing. Like the 30 carbine the 30-30 Winchester is pretty devastating for its range.
@damonthomas89553 жыл бұрын
These balls are heavier than you think, you have no idea how often I hear that. Seriously though, ammo is coming back to Maine, just picked up some 44magnum, 40 cal and 556. They had piles of 556, but no 357, 45 or 9 mil. There was also a fair selection of 12 g buck and slugs. Also no 22 rimfire at all, frikken bummer.

A) another good video. B) 14 hours to make the target balls, that is dedication to your craft. C) I was thinking to myself "...but the poison ivy" and then you mentioned the backstop. Phew! ..... Wait a second, there is still poison ivy in the target area. Sheesh, you might want to take a moment to clear the plants out of there since that's one of your favorite target zones. D) My shoulder got a huge bruise from my first time using my 45-70 and I immediately got a recoil shoulder pad to wear. Yes, the guys mocked me for it when we next went shooting, until I let them have a try with my new rifle. They found out that the kick is no joke and asked for the padding. I suggest you try it. Just wear your shirt over it and no-one will know. ;-)

My guess is that the first shot through the balls further compressed the aluminum immediately adjacent to the "wound", rendering it harder, yet decreasing in hardness as the distance from the hole increased. Clear as mud? This could explain the deflection of the 45-70, it following the path of least resistance.
@davidstuck2866 Жыл бұрын
i'm 66 years old, and i know what you mean about 45-70 recoil. My Marlin is a 1895 guide gun, which means it has a shorter barrel, and it is lighter than your standard 1895. the gun initially wanted to, and tried its best to jump right out of my hands. i was in my late 40's when I purchased it, and I was a lot stronger and tougher then than I am now. any way, I had to find a way to tame this beast of a gun, or sell it. so I did my research, and did 2 things that made a HUGE DIFFERENCE! 1st, I bought a "Gentry Quiet muzzle brake, and had it installed. that took the sting out of shooting it, but it still needed something to lessen that punch in the shoulder. that is where a "LimbSaver" recoil pad. that helped reduce the recoil to a managable, and fun to shoot rifle. the "Gentry Quiet muzzle brake" ( Mr. Gentry is a gunsmith out west if memory serves me, and he will sell the brake directly to you, then you take the gun to your smith and have it installed.) pushes the gas and sound forward, so you dont need headphones and ear plugs to shoot. I highly recommend it. and thankfully, the "Limbsaver" was in stock (factory made for Marlin rifles) at my local gun shop. I seriously hope you read this, as doing this will tame that beast considerably.

Now try it with a 170 grain 30-30. Not sure why everyone (except old time hunters) use 150 grain in 30-30 when the 170 has a much better sectional density...which is what penetration is all about. Still, an interesting, fun video. Entry hole for the 30-30 is a little more to the side than it seems. The bullet may have turned a little, but it is on the side to start with a little bit. And finally the expression "I'll turn your head into a canoe" can be factually used...with a 45-70 Marlin. lol

My first shot of .45-70 was a little of a surprise. You always hear about shotguns and large caliber rifles kicking, but that round has the slow hit of a 12 gauge magnum with the sharpness of .30-06, and it's no joke how hard that feels. Rifles in that round are bordering on small cannons! Little wonder it's still around after all these years, it's a pretty fun round.
