Accuracy internation did testing on fluted barrels, found the flutes heated at a different rate to the bulkmof the barrel affecting accuracy, sure it looks pretty but you can't beat a nice fat straight profile barrel.

@@Wearestillhere306 Hi. As to you question, it really comes down to how much money you are willing to spend. Firearms prices are crazy different here in Canada ,way more expensive, compared to in the USA, so I can’t truly say what’s best or better for you. I sold firearms for many years, and when I was asked this same question I would tell them to first establish a price point, out the door, and we could go from there. Having said that, if you say you want to keep it under a thousand dollars, then you probably have several really decent choices, first, the Browning X-Bolt, and the Tikka T3, would be up there in my opinion, the Winchester XPR is a awesome gun and great value, and I’m sure I could get a XPR here in Canada with my choice of decent glass on it for probably around $1100 cdn so I’m sure you could do way better in the States . As to the Mossberg, from my experience I have never seen one that shot exceptionally well, and I’m sure there’s some out there that do, but my experience says that at any shot over 200 yards your probably relying on luck as well.

The very 1st bolt action rifle I ever shot was a beautifully finished highly polished woods and barrel Mossberg in .308 back in 1968/9ish? I was 12/13 at that time. Yet I still have this image of the Mossberg brand even though they have not produced such a fine grade of bolt actions in quite some time now. Still I have a soft spot for them.

When I bought my Savage .308, I really really wanted a Mossberg Patriot because for the price, you get a great looking rifle. But I watched several videos and read several reviews that showed a lot of accuracy issues. But with almost every rifle I own, you just have to find what it likes, and feed it that. Another benefit to hand loading.

I have a fond spot for Mossberg but it was from another era--I grew up shooting the 151M 22 LR with a 15 shot tubular feed. I still have it and just love the accuracy and the way it feels in my hands. I'm sure Mossberg is a totally different company by now but that 308 sure looks good. My experience with the 308 is that it prefers lighter grain bullets. I handloaded the 308 for many years and the lighter I went the better it shot. thnx for the video~!

I’m glad to see your review of this rifle. I have the same rifle in the same caliber and mine is FDE colored. I almost got the Camo one you have cause it looks dang good but I found a deal on the FDE model. I’ve had good experience with mine once I found my ammo weight of choice and 168 grain is what has always shot best in mine for me. I bought mine about 2-3 years ago and at the time, it had a few bad reviews from less than trustworthy reviewers in my opinion so I bought and tried for myself and came up with the same opinions as you. Glad to see you do a review on it and prove others wrong about the rifle. It’s a solid rifle for the price and will smoke a deer just as good as a $1,000 and up gun.

I also have a Mossberg Patriot .308 Win. I had changed from the synthetic stock to an MDT LSS gen 2 chassis, folding stock adapter, and SCS butt stock. The pad is a bit stiff. So, I put a Pachmayr (no one makes a softer or hydraulic pad for it, yet.) And I felt like the length of pull was off. Turns out that I needed a Goda Grip cheek pad on it so that I would not slip around and keep my eye box. In the mean time, I had put it back in a another Mossberg synthetic stock, OD Green. Those stocks have a split where the rear action screw goes and, in addition, if you torque it down, you crack the mag well and it well never get tight. So, you could have the action moving, which will create more inaccuracy. I put it back in the chassis, which is a superior bedding over the synthetic stock, which had none. Point being, you need a stock that provides stability for both front and rear action screws. With the chassis, before, I was getting no more than 1 MOA after 60 rounds of not resting or cooling. Now, I am getting a Kahntrol Solutions clamp on brake, and that will settle things down a little more. Totally agree about the mid weights. With TC Compass II .308 Win, I experimented and tried Armscor 168 HPBT and it was surprisingly accurate. Found a bigger brand with similar BC and so Federal Fusion 165 gr is so good and I go through the same hole. I don't mean widening the hole. I mean, clean as a whistle through the same hole. I expect to get close to that with my messing around with the Patriot. However, it is a smidge heavy now, with the chassis and an Arken SH4 Gen 2 4-16X50 that I may change to a 6-24 (bought another one before the price goes up.) I may migrate the 4-16 to my 5.56 and have it look similar to a MK12 Mod 0.

I bought a new Mossberg Patriot Night train in 300 win mag. That thing was terrible. I put 150rds through it of all different ammo I never could get at the group with anything. But if I can't get a rifle the group one inch or less I don't want it. I think if you shot five shot groups with that you might be well disappointed also.

Bought a patriot in 308 that's a work in progress. The triggers are garbage, replaced with a Timney huge improvement. The front action screws are blind threaded and known to bottom out without being tight enough to the stock. I put washers on the screw head to make it right. Got my Mossberg .308 patriot classic walnut. Best 3 shot group I got 0.45 inch (11.43mm). In my opinion the biggest factor for accuracy on this riffle is heat because of the thin fluted barrel. I waited 15 minutes between groups. I used Sellier&Bellot 180gr. Haven't shot any 168gr's. But will definitely give them a go.

Wondering how much the sled affects accuracy vs. bipod vs. sand bags. Be interesting to see a video comparison of your most accurate rifle/ammo combo shooting on all theses types of rests. I think sleds offer a certain level of reducing the human error factor, which allows for more accurate data collecting when tuning a rifle to a specific load or in choosing a factory load to run. The more human error you can eliminate the more accurate your data is.

Had my mossberg patriot 308 in the walnut with the vortex scope still. Sight in and 100 yards first few shots were around 1-2.5 moa. After putting more rounds down, noticed the groups got absolutely terrible on multiple factory loads at 150 to 180 grain. Realized the bolts were coming loose and taking it apart I realized the big gap where the recoil lug is. Decided to just glass bed the recoil lug area and at the start of the barrel only. Blue lock tight all action and ring bolts and torque to spec. Went back at 100 yards with 150g federal and core lock 150. After bedding I’m hitting sub moa at 100 every single shot and nothing loose. Overall just fix the recoil lug slop and make it tight and it won’t do you wrong for the price!

I had a stainless Mossberg Patriot with fluted barrel, grey laminated stock and spiraled bolt that I ended up selling because it just would not group, similar to your experiences. Beautiful gun!! Tried Remington core lokt 150, Winchester Silvertip 150 and finally Federal match 168. Both 150 hunting loads were like a 3 inch group at 50 yards, the Federal 168 Match was a 1 inch or less group at 50 yards but is not hunting ammo so sadly the gun was traded on something else. Just happy I was not alone in my accuracy issues. I bought it used with a nice scope and ready to go from a dealer, guessing the previous owner had the same issues.

update; I had problems with the covers slipping on the Arken scope because of how it is held on, I believe. So, I put my Vortex Venom back on the Compass II. Also, the Backfire channel has done another vid with a Mossberg Patriot in synthetic stock. Not really any better. In one set of ammo, they got to a little less than 2 MOA. From the factory, there is no accuracy guarantee. As opposed to the Compass II, which came with a 1 MOA on the first three shots guarantee. And it shot 1/2 MOA fresh out of the box with store bought ammo. And it surpassed the accuracy test and I am an average shooter. So, the Patriot is an inexpensive rifle and you may end up spending more to put it in a different stock. Something pillar bedded. Or even a chassis, which is all metal and is the bedding, itself. In the newest Backfire vid, he reviewed that others, including this channel, were having the same accuracy problems regardless of shooter or optics. And I consider this channel and Backfire to be better shooters than I am. And if I am the average guy hunting, then it is lucky if we even get a round in the deer, at all.

Funny this video came out , I ordered some 308 stuff to make a little custom 308 build for myself. I normally like to shoot 6.5 Grendel in a bolt action. I been oogling a 308 for a long time.

Your videos are always spot on with my current searches. I'm in the middle of trying to find a perfect (for me) scout style "do-all" .308 for whitetail and mid-long range target shooting....

My 308 seems to like the 150s best, 1.3” with Federal 150g TSX, 1.1” with Barnes 150g TTSX, 1.1” Norma 139g Evostrike. Obviously all hunting ammo, but the 168, 175, and 185g target stuff has all been just acceptable at 1.5”-1.75”. Been doing this with a 2-7x scope and my crooked eyes, so I’m sure groups would tighten up even. I’ve been zeroed for the 185s to coyote hunt this winter to use them up, but I’ve not killed one yet lol.

Haven't shot a Mossberg Patriot, but I've owned several Mossberg ATR 100 and Maverick rifles, which use the same barrel and action combo I believe. My fluted barrel Mossberg ATR .308 shot the Winchester Super-X Power-Point 180 grain the best. I recall it was a big difference between those and all the other flavors of .308 I sampled. It's nice when a rifle can shoot the cheap (relative) off the shelf ammo. Thanks for another great video!

Good looking rifle. If the stick is synthetic I woukd use Devcon to stiffen the forend so there's no flex at all. Ive done it to a Mosin-Nagant rifle with a wood stock. Makes a world of a difference. 🎩♠🏁🎯🏵

I have heard the rear anchor screw is kinda under torqued from the factory but tightening it much may crack it because plastic... Probably an easy work around for someone that is slightly handy at all or has access to KZbin video tutorials. Seems like you need to pay attention when you take it apart because the mag insert/sleeve is just sitting in there and will fall out, so watch where it lands lol

I have this exact rifle in 6.5 CM. I also handload my own rounds. Factory ammo doesn't shoot well. I fired Sellers & Bellot 140gr, Remington 140 gr Core-Lokt, Hornady ELD match/ELD-X, and Sierra Game king 142gr HPBT. The factory ammo shot terribly, but when I started developing load data, I realized that the ELD-X and Game king shot REALLY well, but I needed different powder charges. I now shoot only the ELD-X in 143gr, 40.7 grains of H4350 and CCI 100 small rifle primers out of ELD match brass, OAL 2.80 +/- 0.001 inches. A 300$ rifle is shooting a .5 MOA at 200 yards. This video is a perfect example of paying attention to the rifle's needs. Just because a gun shoots the first ammo you throw at it poorly, doesn't mean it's the rifle, or you. Rifles have preferences to ammo. Just experiment around and find the one your rifle likes. Great video man! Keep shooting straight!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have sighted in a rifle similarly but at 25 yards. No sense flinging expensive ammo down range at 100+ if your scope is off or not put on tight etc… I was looking at this rifle even in that caliber (especially since 308 is much easier to find) to have a rifle that I can put a suppressor on. I didn’t know that I could use one for big game in my home state of West Virginia until this year.

I have one in 6.5 creedmor and it would not shoot tight groups until I installed a pillar at the back tang and glass bedded it, that turned it into a tack driver, mine will shoot 85 grain seirra's under half inch at 100 and 140 gr and 129gr will do the same.

Odds are.. the rifle just needed to be “shot in”. The more you shot it, the smaller the groups would have gotten until you started getting the same consistent group size. Then don’t clean the bore until the group started to open back up.

Mossberg is making waves with their options. If they can keep their quality control maintained they will only gain more business. Some people have solid accuracy and some have 3" groups or worse.

I don't see anything wrong with the way you sight in. I do it somewhat the same. My bore sight is a Tasco that slips into the muzzle. Then I fire and sight in at the short range for the rifle. 30-06 with a 180 grain bullet is done at 20 yards if the muzzle velocity is 2700 fps. Dead on bullseye is what you want at that distance. For this 30-06 that puts 0 at 215 yards and +2.75 at 100 yards with the total point blank sight in distance at 265-270 yards. This is just an example. The flatter shooting rifles will require a longer short range sight in. Just the way I do it because I can more easily hit the bullseye at the short distance, but it's just the way I learned to do it and as long as you reach the same end you get there however you like.

My 308 Patriot is shooting 1” groups regularly with 165gr ammo. Go to 150 ammo and it’s the same results as in the video. Haven’t tried the heavier weights but seeing the similarities I think I can save the money and skip the 180gr stuff.
