I'm a long, long time fan of the 45-70 government. I have used the same ammo that you demonstrated there and it's good stuff. First generation Marlin guide gun. My favorite in my stable. I would highly recommend that combo to anyone.

Based on your comment I imagine you are happy with the real life performance you see. Good to know, because based on this test not what you would expect. Penciling through 48 inches of gel and water likely means that it didn’t expand at all.
@phild98132 жыл бұрын
I am curious with that low of velocity how much expansion is achieved without hitting something hard.
@scottcooksey52842 жыл бұрын
@@nikos6220 yes,, I have used it ,exactly the same ammo I've seen what it can do. I have used 300 grain loadings and plus p loadings. The 45-70 is a big game ,large game even dangerous game caliber. With the right loadings it serves very well for deer. If you are capable of reloading you can also use a very light grain bullet called a button bullet in the 100 grain range. But you should remember that at the very minimum you are still putting a .45 diameter hole through whatever it hits. Now if you use a .22 or .25 , .27caliber chambered bing bang,, two - two and a half x expansion would be considered good,,, right?... So applying that logic .45 caliber with minimal expansion would also be considered good, or in my experiences devastating.
@nikos62202 жыл бұрын
@@scottcooksey5284 absolutely agree, I just have my doubts that the projectile expands at 1150 ft/s. Will it kill, sure thing. Is it high performing, probably not. I have just suggested to have a comparison with the Hornady 410 Sub-X as it was actually designed to expand at those speeds. .458 is nice, but if I can get .700 or .800 …

My 45-70 holds about a three inch group at 100 using the iron sights. I’m sure I’d do better with an optic but can’t bring myself to do it. I’d say the plate was responsible for the expansion. By the look of the gel those didn’t expand at all and the core wasn’t all that locked. Very impressive groups there.

I started with an H&R Single Shot .45-70 and had taken many deer with it. I also about 8 years ago started using a Marlin Guide Gun with an 18" barrel and mounted a 2-5x32 power scope on it. I've taken every deer I have hit and never lost one with either rifle. ;) On our property, I rarely got more than a 75 yard shot, so it's a perfect deer killer. I don't like the light 300 gr. Hollow Points that most manufacturers sell though. I took one with that and the exit hole was the size of my fist. I load my own with Hornady 350 Gr. RNFP jacketed bullets or 330 Gr. Great video Adam. That’s a relatively light load as far as what’s out there today, but an old standard that still hammers game at close woods range. Under 100 yds it will flatten big hogs reliably, and no deer stands a chance. Elk, use a tougher boolot, or a hard cast. That slower slug doesn’t bloodshot entire quarters either, a big plus when trying to waste nothing.

Winchester Browning 1886 SaddleRing Carbine is what I use these days in this caliber. My favorite load is a hot one 53 gr 3031 400 grain Speer flat point. It's a killer on anything in North America at ranges where open sights are appropriate. The standard load you were using is a killer on big game as well even with its low velocity, big bullet lots of penetration winning combination. It would have done your bison and was responsible for accomplishing just that back in the 1873 onward. This Remington round was essentially a copy of the 1873 Springfield trapdoor carbine load while the rifle used a 500 grain. I have a few of those that were carried during the Spanish American War by a family relative of my wife's. HER dad gave me a few before he died. He was given the rifle, bayonet and cartridge belt of them decades ago prior to WW2.

I love the 45-70, I've had 2 one Marlin 1895 and a Ruger no.1. I shot a Moose with my Marlin at 90 yards and don't ever use that Hornady Lever evolution junk on a Moose. I hit in the lungs and he disappeared into the thick stuff. I didn't think he'd go very far hit in the lungs but we waited 30 minutes before going after him. We tracked him for 2 miles before we caught up to him and then I put 3 more shots into him at 15 yards before he finally went down. When we skinned him out I found my first shot had hit a rib and the jacket stayed on that rid and the lead had punched a .45 caliber hole through the rib into the lung but never went any further. When I shot the last 3 into him I put 2 behind the left front shoulder that didn't even penetrate the chest cavity. The last shot I put in his neck and that finally dropped him but even at 15 yards it only penetrated enough to break his neck and all we found of the bullet were fragments. I never used that lever evolution ammo again after that, The only factory ammo I used after that were Remington 405gr and I bought a set of 45-70 dies afterwards.

I love .45-70. For years I called on Montana Armory in Big Timber, MT, to sell them office supplies of all things. I'd walk into their showroom and covet the models they had on display. (I've had to ask forgiveness.) I'd stare at the log they had on the floor which showed what the .45-70 did when shot into the end at 100 yards. If I remember correctly; 11-1/2" deep. Yup! They penetrate. They split the log so you can see the path. After years of drooling in their showroom, I was finally able to buy one of my own in the Model 1875 Sporter, single shot, falling block, with the 30" barrel. I haven't actually weighed it but it's probably between 9 and 10 lbs. For my purposes I prefer a 10 lb. gun with a 30" barrel over a lightweight gun with a 22" barrel. But that's just a personal thing. When I shoot the 405 grain bullet, (much like what you shot in this video, I suspect), it feels like a gentle nudge against my shoulder. It's all in the propellant. Well, not all. The propellant that is used in this bullet is slow-burn, (if I understand correctly), instead of the modern explosives. When you put a slow burn powder together with a 10 lb. gun and a 30" barrel, you get a gentle nudge that is just fun to shoot. I'm almost 70 years old and weigh 165 lbs. Gentle is good. God bless, Miles.

A 65 yard shot really surprised me as I watched the wound as the bullet entered. The force of the bullet opened the deer's chest to the size of my fist and shrunk back to the bullet diameter. You can say I am full of s--t if you want...I know what I saw. Dropped the deer in his tracks. I have watched a cape buffalo hunt on you tube. Very impressive there also. I have taken deer with many types of firearms in my 76 years and I like the 45-70 best of all. This year I will be using my super redhawk 44 mag with 9 1/5" barrel. Can hardly wait for Nov 15th. Now I understand that, sometimes, too much is just right. We did end up with an 1885 in 25-06. Father in law was a firearms historian for Browning, a gunsmith, and a collector. My brother in law (retired LEO) ended up with all three 45-70s. Two 1885s and a 78. Im hoping that he will be willing to sell us one of those guns. I get my reloads up to about 1,500 fps. That easily extends my MPBR out to a solid 125 yards, or a bit more. That keeps the recoil down to a nice firm "push"; I think going hotter decreases the effective accuracy and there is no need for the extra power. That 405 billet will always punch right through even a big buck, without dealing with excessive recoil. Also less meat damage than something like a 30-06.

The 45cal has been around for a long time, the first cartridge type of revolver was the SAA in which the 45 long Colt, thanks to John Browning, the 45 New Service was used during the during the WW 1 and I have that was used by the Canadian Mounted Police but towards the end of that war the 1911 Colt which still is carried with the 45 ACP. When my dad was drafted and they issued him the 30 cal M-1 Carbine which he changed out for the Thompson sub machine gun from a fallen soldier and carried it with him while he was in the Philippines. The first deer rifle he built was the Springfield in the classic 30-06 which he checkered the walnut stock. I inherited it and put a Leopoldo scope on it . I inherited a pre 64 Winchester in the 270 which had a Weaver scope on it which I changed to the Leopoldo variable. I currently own one from Springfield which I modified for shooting bowling pins, another one I bought while shooting with the Rocketdyne pistol team was a Colt Commander and the Ruger semiautomatic with the bull barrel, since that time I’ve acquired the Colt Woodsman Match with the High Standard Supermatic, I also inherited the Gold Cup National Match 45 ACP and bought the S&W copy of the Colt 1911 with the crimson light in the left hand side. As I grew older I got rid of everything that wasn’t 45LC , 45ACP , 38 Special. During the time I was living in LADWP housing for 17 years at Control Gorge Power Plant as a Traveling Relief Operator I acquired an FFL for Curios and Relics and purchased guns from Guns International- the Italian semi automatic are some of the finest ever produced and I acquired the Model 70s in 22 cal , 32 auto and the 380 which was a 9mm short, of the Walther I also have the 380 , 32 but was never able to find the 22 caliber . I never thought my love of firearms and being able to acquire them from Italy and Germany would someday be actual investments. I bought the FNFAl at B&B gun sales and still consider it one of the finest semi automatic rifles firing the 308.

Great all around test. I have an old Henry brass 45-70. My best is with hornady ftx. 3 holes touching in the bullseye at 100 yards. Irons sights too, but Im still young and my eyes work.

Mine has a 32" barrel on a single shot breech loader. Under 1" groups are pretty normal for Mine. It has a globe front and a rear elevation adjustable.

I have a JM guide gun from early 2000s. I load the Remington 405s to about 1500-1600 and they blow things up real good! I took the scout scope off and just shoot aperture these days. I also used to load Beartooth Bullets 425 grain HCGC wide flat noses to 1950. That gives all the recoil you paid for and they will shoot through just about anything made of flesh! I broke my right shoulder two years ago so I don't shoot those too much anymore (it hurts just thinking about it...).

The only reason that bullet expanded was because it hit the soft body armor. A lead shotgun slug will flatten like a silver half dollar when it hits soft body armor. Looks like those slow bullets penciled through the gel blocks with little or no expansion. You need to dial up the velocity to get those jacketed bullets to expand in gel. These Remington rounds are like cowboy loads. Impressive accuracy though. Thanks for all the videos!

Great video. I have a Henry Big Boy 45-70. The trigger is supreme to be factory and mine is topped off with a 3x9 Meopta and I couldnt be happier with the setup. I load my own ammo but I can get a 3 shot group thats one ragged hole. Doesnt matter if your getting 1.5 inches and under @ 100 yards with factory ammo or hand loads with a straight wall lead chucker, thats aces in my book. Looks like your set up is winner!

I love my 45/70. It’s perfect for most hunting. My Marlin SS Guide Gun is one of my favorite hunting rifles. It has a Burris 2x7 Scout Scope and deadly out to 250 yards with Hornady 325 gr rounds.

I have a 1895 CBA in 45-70 and with my 74 year old eyes i had to finally scope it. Put a Leopold 1.5x4 optic on it. I love the combo. I'm thinking about getting some berrys 350 grainers for it and trying them out. They're cheap enough for some good plinking sessions. Really can't find anyone with any experience with these

I have an identical rifle. I wound up with a Leupold 1.5-4 VX-Freedom scout scope on an XS scout rail. I tried a few conventional receiver mounted scopes. In my opinion, the scout set up is my favorite for retaining the handling qualities of the traditional brush gun. But, still offers the clarity of good optics.

I've always wanted a 45-70 lever gun for the brush but paying $3-4 per round would take a lot of the fun out of it for me so I just stick with 12 gauge rifled slugs. But it was indeed a fun video to watch!

My best 45-70 group came from a 90s vintage Handi-Rifle. Hornady 350 grain round nose and a stiff load of H-322 went into less than half an inch. 3 shots disappeared under one nickel.

The body armor may stop a 45-70, but the impact would definitely cause some serious damage. You would have a broken rib or three, motto mention the cardiac contusion! It may even cause the heart to stop completely! I definitely want to get a 45-70! I'd kinda like to locate a Ruger #3 in 45-70!

Those 405s used to be the only 45-70 Remington offered. That "older" model Marlin looks pretty good. Punching a big hole all the way through some hooved animal ought to make it leak like one of those jugs. Good luck if you take it hunting again.

Since the bullet did not expand after going through two blocks of ballistic gel, I don't see it as a viable load unless it were to hit bone.I will stick with the Remington 300 GR SJHP full pressure loads, or my hand loads.

I load the 45-70 400gr semi jacketed soft point to 1800 fps in my Marlin. At those speeds the bullet opens up to .80-.90 cal in the first few inches then ends up penetrating less than those slower bullets you were using. Not much hunting with but fun on bowling pins and water melons.
