I really want one of these, but since Newport says they are designed for lead acid batteries (which I can't lift), I'm sitting on the fence about it. This is from their website "All Newport trolling motors are designed to be used with Lead-Acid style Deep Cycle or Marine batteries (Flooded, SLA, AGM or Gel). The use of Lithium batteries is not recommended and won't be compatible with some of the features offered on our motors. For more information, please read our post Lithium Batteries With Trolling Motors?" I'm pretty sure these days that most people are using lithium batteries though, I'm just worried about voiding a warranty.
@WadeHarrison8 ай бұрын
At the price these sell for I’m good using whatever on them I don’t understand why they only want lead acid batteries I’m going to be using a lifepo4 and have been useing it and seems to be going just fine
@S.C-m8c8 ай бұрын
I'm going to get one anyway, the thing is to not run them at full power for long distances, evidently without a battery management system to regulate the voltage, at full power lithium batteries put out more power than lead acid which can cause the motor to overheat which will damage it. The features that aren't compatible that Newport is talking about (when using a lithium battery) is the battery power level metering system because of how the batteries get depleted, I guess lead acid will show a gradual decline and lithium will pretty much show full power until there is none, lol. Anyway, thanks for taking the effort and making the video, I'll probably buy your exact setup. Except I'll be running it on a paddleboard, haha.

@@ADKMuskyFoolonFly63 I have 2 CK1 Ventures and decided to go with the Newport Vessels 55 lbs motors for both. I must say, this motor pushes those kayaks along quite well! I put a piece of 1” solid wood on the transom to give the motor mount grips more security. It’s primitive but it works really well. Of course it’s a lot cheaper than installing a motor mount. Also I have the extension handles ‘with the knuckle’ which especially helps with steering. Way better than the straight extension with no knucle! Worth the extra money for sure! everybody keeps saying super simple or very simple. No it is not. Most kayaks don't have that dry storage in the back that I have seen especially all the fishing ones. I have a catch 100 classic I don't have that. So that would mean I have to cut a hole there I don't have the material for that. If I could get that transom, which is already in my cart lol, I would have to figure out a way to cut in it and then screw this in. I hate when people take what they are good at doing and make it sound so simple. You did a fantastic job with this, you could of bought a longer tiller and maybe it might have been a little easier to steer it. Awesome video widh you was near me to help me lol I have a the trolling motor as well. Question, do I need the screws or does it come with the screws?

Pelican use some weird screws for their flush mounts. I tried that sideways thing did not work 😢

the battery indicator is sort of useless with a lithium batt. The bms is always giving all the power it can until it cant and shuts off. and that's how the meter will read. You need a shunt or some lithium batts have a built in Bluetooth shunt... I just stopped worrying about it. 100AH lifepo4 in a kayak will go all day long if you keep your speed down. The battery can usually last way longer than I do.
