What happened when the New World Order was so on fire, WCW decided to produce a nWo PPV in 1997? Tony Schiavone and Conrad Thompson brave what would be a strange PPV experiment for Turner Broadcasting.

I've only been listening to Tony for a few months 2022, so I'm starting at 1 listen all the way through. 16 hour shift today I might get caught up.

My friends and I used to buy these PPV's and make drinking games out of them. I remember watching this and thinking that Eric had lost his mind. When Jericho came out and they played no music and the announcer buried him, it was shocking and made me laugh for a second. "Loser" coming through the PA... Then, I remember feeling bad and thinking "I bet treatment like this will make Jericho put out feelers to WWF come contract time... **sigh** R.I.P., WCW.

This PPV was definitely a "what could have been" type of show. Good show regardless Tony & Conrad, keep it up!

Would love to hear them discuss Superbrawl 2 one time. Have a soft spot for that show. The reason the NWO only PPV didn't get over was because such a big part of their appeal was the conflict with WCW. Not sure if them going it alone as their own brand would have worked or not.

The point at 31:00 about stacking fans on one side and tricking the tv audience with camerawork is something I noticed as a kid when WCW went downhill in 2000. It's cool to hear that I wasn't an OCD riddled mess.

"CANNOT HAVE AN ENTIRE HEEL SHOW" Then WHY can cable news have FOX NEWS (Republican) MSNBC (Democratic) CNN (Fair and Balanced) Report NEWS from a slanted and biased but nWo as its own entity can't work? One thing; nWo needed an actual broadcast team nWo failed to define "2 SWEET" nWo didn't evolve correctly from faction to brand Adding more members doesn't make it a brand

Actually the Coke/Pepsi analogy is very accurate. Coke mocked Pepsi quite a bit back in the day. They actually even changed their distinctive flavor at one one point to taste more like Pepsi

It was a garbage PPV, but in the grand sense of the story of WCW vs. nWo, it was a necessary low point. The garbage truck entrance, the awful "Miss nWo" nonsense, the sleazy dancing silhouettes... terrible to a high degree, but I think it helped (at the time) to solidify that the nWo was definitely a force to be reckoned with. The only thing I regret seeing was poor Ted DiBiase trying to play a hardass when he looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there.

So regarding Tony's coke vs Pepsi analogy......Pepsi .makes more annual revenue than coke.....so.....he should have said coke talks about Pepsi ....Pepsi doesn't talk about coke

I have to say, as a fan, from the Crockett years, I bought so many a WCW ppv, especially during the NWO years, waiting for a payoff, any payoff, and NWO would always win. So, I stopped buying ppv's. It was the Finger Poke of Doom where I stopped, heavy heart, stopped watching WCW, which meant for me, wrestling was dead. Something, like Tony, I loved since Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling. For Pete's sakes.....NWO WAS awesome, but not forever, yet seems like Eric was always trying to bring it back.
@mox19380
@mox19380 3 жыл бұрын
I agree you kept waiting for the payoff and there was none. that was the problem with the NWO story arc...there was no few plausible ways to end it without destroying the entire product. either the WCW becomes NWO and that's nonsense OR the NWO completely fades out and then what do you do with all the wrestlers who buried the WCW, its wrestlers and WCW fans? it was one thing when an NWO'er left the faction but if the whole faction suddenly fades then what? well the what was the end of the WCW entirely

This show was such a cluster fuck. Not talking about Tony and Conrad, I am talking about WCW/NWo Souled out 1997. I hated that Miss NWO contest. I hate Dave Meltzer but he was right, this was a crappy show. I thought Eddie vs Syxx was my match of the night. They did a great job with the ladder. This show was like a train wreck, you really wanted to skip it but you couldn't.
