So saving one frame doesn't save you any time unless that one frame gets you to an earlier check. Just like every so many minutes, a bus comes to pick people up at a bus stop, and getting there earlier doesn't save you time on your trip unless you get to take an earlier bus because of it.

The 8-2 pipe jump is not a wall jump, just a really really precise jump. You are jumping off the top of the pipe. You do kind of clip up onto the top of the pipe by a couple pixels, but that's just how corners work.

The reason why glitches are banned in Twin Galaxies is because some people can use glitches to manipulate the game in sending you to the ending screen without playing the game, and they think it is considered cheating as it ruins the purpose of playing the game if you can execute a glitch that sends you to the end right away, and they thought all glitches have that capability.

The last possibility to improve the times in speedruns is to move faster than the rest of the world. That means, according to Albert Einstein, one would have to be in a very fast spaceship. The faster the spaceship flies, the slower time passes relative to the people who are on earth. If you were to fly at exactly the speed of light in the end (which is impossible in reality), then time would even stand still completely and you could play Super Mario Bros in zero seconds, no matter how you play. So if a TOP player were to play SMB1 in one of the fastest aircraft in the world, he could save a few millionths of a second. Another possibility would be to get as close as possible to the Earth's core, because the closer you get to the Earth's core, the slower time passes. It would be even more exciting if you played SMB in a black hole. There it might even be possible to achieve a time with a negative sign, i.e. -5min.54sec.

I think I was the one (a non-speedrunner) who originally posed the question of 4m 53s being possible to Bismuth a few years ago and even he said it was impossible to me and I can see that 4m 54.282s being the realistic human best time as well if the theoretical best is 4m 54.032s and cant be improved any lower. Unless if someone finds some crazy new strat (in which the game is running out of altogether and he DID point some possibilities but could never be done by a human OR TAS but I forgot what they were since its been so long) and i am beginning to think with how little time that is being shaved off after the 4m 54s has been achieved, 4m 53s would forever remain a "pipe" dream. I can honestly see that now. It would be killer to see 4m 53s be achieved but not now as pretty much every viable frame rule has been exhausted, every possible trick is nearly implemented and speed gain reached, it is just impossible. Now we wait to find out who would be the one to pull off the 4m 54.282s final time. I know that could be a few years away but I know it is going to happen sooner or later.

Excellent video! Glad to be subscribed x) At 18:18 you say that the last remaining frame will be impossible to save. I don't know SMB1 well but I know one thing: never say never in speedrunning! The frame has been saved in real time using savestates by HitzCritz (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHikaJ9-iLmneas) it's just a matter of time before it's saved in a full room, and eventually in a full level :p

"Impossible" is the dumbest thing to say in the context of speedruns. Highly improbable is better but ive seen so many "tas only" strats get implemented in actual runs I cant in good faith say that something will never be done. Take Karl jobst for example, the number of times he showed a new strat then said "it will likely never be done by people" only for him to come back a year later showing the strat being done by people.

Not the only game, TAS starts at power on, and end o last input, but normal speedruns usually start after file select, sometimes even later, and end sometimes even earlier than last TAS input, depending on game.
