Review of my 16 year old Maruti Suzuki 800 from the streets of Mumbai and beyond. The legendary 800 was made in India by public sector unit Maruti Udyog and its joint venture parnter Suzuki Japan. Maruti 800 changed the dynamics of Indian car industry and was known as the people's car in the country.

This is just wow feeling and great review. Never thought of M800 review in 2016. Every bit you said about Maruti is true. One will realize importance of Maruti only after owning other brand cars!

My feeling exactly. Drove family cars, but now a big fan boy of the Indian legend. I mean it's a piece of Indian automotive history which you can drive every day and live with. No other can can claim that.

Baljeet Singh you're definitely right! A long time ago we had a Premier Padmini car which need to service everyday, as its a very old car. A garage told us that FIAT parts are very hard to obtain and also hard to repair, and they said the same thing - "Sold the FIAT and buy a Maruti, its parts are very easily findable and repairable". And finally, we sold off the FIAT in 2013 and brought a brand new Maruti 800 AC, which we still kept. We also have a Renault Kwid (2016) car which is taller and a lot bigger than a Maruti, but its driving quality is so bad, very uncomfortable!! We are just thinking to sold off the Kwid till next year, but never the Maruti!! As its a No.1 car of India, no other small car (expect the Maruti) is heavier like that, Maruti is a extremely heavy car, almost like a Tata Sumo and Bolero, no other differences expect the size and speed, these are only differences!! Thanks for reading!! 😊

My father owned a 1998 Maruti 800 for 14 years. I learnt driving on that. Damn was is so fun to drive and an unbreakable piece of machinery. The thrill of driving a maruti 800 on 100+ kmph is better than driving a sports hatchback at 160+ kmph! Great review of the legendary car that truly changed the Indian automotive industry.

Was called Suzuki Alto in the west. :-) Were very common here once. Now most of them are rusted away, due to the colder climate and salt on our roads during the winter. Engines were tough as nails, but Japanese engines usually are. Got a Daihatsu Sirion MK1 myself, from 1998, so it's turning 20 this year. Never misses a beat.
@motoind
@motoind 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, these Japanese run on and on. And the tropical climate in the subcontinent give the cars longer life. You guys have been much luckier lot. The Daihatsu never came to India. We barely get good drivers cars in India because of the 100% import duty.

Best steering feedback (almost telepathic). Phenomenal handling. Peppy engine. Outstanding throttle response. Manual everything. 360-degree visibility. Small enough to go about anywhere even remotest roads where most cars can't go. Fun to drive even at slow speeds. Definition of a Workhorse. What else as an enthusiast do you want?

I read this in my car manual. Resting your hand fully on a gear knob puts a pressure on the bushings under the gear knob although this wont destroy your gear box or anything but it might cause them to wear out sooner. And its always advisable to keep both of your hands on the steering wheel while driving.

I started driving at age 10 in an 800, after that I drove almost all the famous german and American cars on the planet including some exotic super cars. I got a chance to drive the 800 again last year and boy, it was exciting !! I felt it somewhat similar to an old Mini Cooper. The steering had amazing feel. After 17 years , I drove my first car again and I can say its a wonderful piece of engineering !

I had a 1997 800 DX that we bought in 2004. which had done 20k kilometers. We drove it out of town three times from Chennai to Shimla and bac. Before her engine blew from a lose pin handle, we drove her for 124,909km. Now we have a 2014 K10. I still miss that car.,

Hey dude thumbs up on the video and i do too have a maruti 4speed 2003 model. I have this strange issue. Happens only on traffic. The engine starts to heat up sometimes and the pickup is very slow. This happens often when you on traffic and if ac is switched on. Im kind of scared to drive long drives because of this issue! And the funny part is once you leave the engine off or leave the ac off this happens rarely.

@Motoind how is the AC? How long does it take to cool down during summer? Will it effect the pickup of the car if the ac is on?
@motoind
@motoind 6 жыл бұрын
AC is sufficient even for Mumbai summer. Say a good 2 minutes. Yes it does, it feels like an extra 10 horses/ NOS power when you switch off the AC. Mine is 5 speed model with 47bhp so the effect on pickup is much lesser than the 4 speed models of 800.

Had already spend more than 25,000Rs on it,to change 2 tyres, and some service works to get it re-registerd for 5 years. I did make some long rides, I cant explain the feel of happiness and joy that i get from riding my maruti than riding any other modern cars.Proud owner of Maruti 800.

Hey Vijesh, it's an absolute pleasure to meet like minded people who keep these old machines running. It does take some effort and it's worth it imho. The Accent and Santro made the Hyundai company what it is now. And a red Accent Viva ride 😍 when I was a child still sticks to this day. Do keep enjoying the miles :)

Absolutely ..The Hyundai did its home work well before making inroads into the Indian consumer market. Unlike the main Foreign Brands like GM , Toyota , VW or Ford that are still struggling to break even despite decades of their presence in India , Hyundai as a foreign brand is a major success and much of it can be attributed to Accent and Santro as they are very easy to maintain , Good service network and very much adaptable to the Indian roads .....even now my 16 year old HYundai accent costs me just Inr 10 K for a major service and less than that for a minor.....whereas a Ford Fiesta or an Ikon with same specs will burn a big hole in your pocket ......
