Why a Beefalo is Perfect for Walter | Don't Starve Together Walter Boss Run Part 1

Welcome to another Don't Starve Together video. This is the first recap in a new series covering a boss run I recently finished on Twitch. This run features Walter and will showcase a playstyle focused on the early taming of an ornery beefalo. Walter comes with Woby who can be ridden, so the benefit of a beefalo is not immediately apparent. The synergy, however, is actually quite powerful, and an ornery beefalo will compensate for some of Walter's most pronounced downsides. So enjoy the recap and stay tuned for part 2.

Walter is not affected by any passive sanity loss but can still benefit from positive sanity auras. On the flip side of this Walter does not receive sanity bonuses from any clothing worn and loses significant amounts of sanity when hit. He also takes extra damage from bees which cannot be mitigated with armor.
Walter also has a slingshot that he can load up with different ammos prototyped at each of the science and magic stations. It is not an overpowered weapon but is the first projectile weapon to be introduced as a primary weapon for a character in Don't Starve Together, and certainly offers some unique advantages for indirect combat.
Walter's eternal companion Woby provides nine inventory slots, and can also be turned into Big Woby by feeding monster meat. You can ride Big Woby around for fast travel, however Woby will not voluntarily participate in any battles and buck you if she gets hit.
From 2019-2021, Klei has released a series of game updates available to all players, under the single thematic focus entitled “Return of Them."
"Eye of the Storm" is the final installment in this series of updates and adds the Moonstorm event, a surprise NPC character, and the Celestial Champion to the game. This will complete the Mysterious Energy quest which begins with the discovery of the lunar island and completion of all three celestial altars. It is the longest endgame quest in the game and offers a number of unique benefits to your world and character, such as infinite full moon nights, renewable moon glass, and infinite light in the form of a crown and shards.
"Reap What You Sow" is the seventh major release of updates under the Return of Them in Don't Starve Together and replaces traditional farms with a completely revamped farming system which includes tillable farm plots, unique farming equipment, crop displays, and numerous fertilizers. The system is considerably more complex but provides a system for year-round farming and the potential for highly-accelerated crop production.
The debris from the moon didn't just reach the forest. It's influence has penetrated down into the caves as well, not only mutating its already strange occupants, but opening areas that had been long forgotten. Forgotten Knowledge is the sixth major release of updates under the Return of Them theme and adds two new cave biomes: the Lunar Grotto and the Ancient Archives. It also adds several new mobs, three new crockpot recipes, and two crafting stations including another moon altar and a station for crafting natural turf.
Troubled Waters, the fifth Don't Starve Return of Them update, added new ocean mobs, foods, craftables, structures, and eight new crockpot recipes. It also added leafy meat as a crockpot ingredient and renewable volt goat herds.
She Sells Seashells went live in April 2020. An Island fragment of the moon has left a lonely creature stranded. Is it friendly? Time will tell. New features include messages in bottles, the moon fragment island, the Crabby Hermit, Crab King, new seasonal fish, the Wobster and Wobster Den the Winch Boat structure, sunken treasures, and singing shells.
"Hook, Line, & Inker" will be remembered as the big fishing update. We finally have the tools we need to go sailing and fish around literally anywhere in the ocean. This update added over a dozen new ocean mobs, three new crockpot recipes, and tons of new craftable items and structures. Most of these new additions are tailored toward the goal of dramatically expanding the fishing experience in DST.
Don't Starve Together is the standalone multiplayer expansion of the uncompromising wilderness survival game, Don't Starve. Now including Reign of Giants; adding new characters, seasons, creatures, biomes, and Giant new challenges to Don’t Starve Together. Cooperate with your friends in a private game, or take your chances with strangers online. Work with other players to survive the harsh environment, or strike out on your own. Do whatever it takes, but most importantly, Don't Starve.

Man, i love beefs, but people dont really use them because almost every single taming guide says you need to feed 4 dragon pies a day when you dont need to feed them other than raising obedience as long as you just ride it everywhere

Beefalo will lose an additional 100% obedience/day if starving. But it's still much cheaper to just feed twigs/grass for obedience than to try and keep their hunger topped off.

Finally, I've been waiting for so long for a don't starve youtuber to actually show the full capabilities of walter! It is quite annoying that a lot of people kept having wrong opinion and thought what I had been doing (as a walter main, mind you) to be useless due to a few early outspoken information. Honestly, I'm planning to make a guide on Walter for a long while, but I kept forgetting to finish them until your video made me remember. Also Jazzy, here are some tips for Walter and Beefalo that I'm planning to add to my guides: - A standard / Ornery Beefalo without a war saddle can actually dodge Klaus's Blue Deer's Ice AoE attack without slowing down - You can actually carry 2 Beefaloes with you at a time as Woby counts as its own owner if you plop a Beefalo bell in her. - (Kinda confidential but eh) you can *technically* still be able to duplicate beefalo with woby. a bit finicky to work it out though. There's actually a simpler way to tame a beefalo without fussing about if you had fed him/her or not: At the start of the taming process, you just have to keep feeding your beefalo until it starts to fart (signifying that they are almost completely full), and it usually only took around a stack of twigs to do it. after that has happened, you don't really need to think to feed your beefalo for a while, and when it starts to beg for food again they'd usually only costs around 19-21 pieces of twig to bring them back to full. keep rinsing and repeating these once in a while and your beefalo will be fully domesticated in no time at the end of day 23 (if you start around day 3). and Again, I truly appreciate what you had done to help the walter mains escape the scrutiny of the less-knowledged. As for you Walter mains out there, if someone asked a stupid question on why you don't just use woby instead of having to tame a beefalo, tell them this: Do you use an axe instead of a dark sword/hambat to kill bosses?

I really love Walter's kit. I know a lot of ppl like to bag on it, but its really cool to be able to ignore sanity from many sources. Also lots of people act like they want bigger down sides to a character, and imo Walter's sanity loss from damage is about the biggest down side in the game. It guarantees you can't tank your way through any bosses lest you get mobbed by instant terror beaks that won't go away until you heal up. He is a very risky character to play, and I've had a blast with him. ironically - I never thought to get him a beefalo. That play make a lot of sense! I'll have to try that next time I pick him up (too busy with Wanda lately lol)

You can stun bishops with poop pellets to stun them because if you fire it during there attack animation,they dont shoot

I just lost my beefalo today to an unexpected hound attack. I've erected a statue where my dear beef fell in its memory. I was just going to go without a beefalo from now on but maybe I'll try taming another beef soon :) probably not going to go for ornery beef because I'm crap at fighting on cowback and I play wigfrid, but it's nice having a companion and a steed. I also somehow forgot you could ride beef into caves now, so thanks for the reminder too!

I strongly recommend bringing a 20% Construction Amulet back to the surface after ruin rush. In spring plant a flower in the base and let the horny Beef kill the butterflies while you are farming or crafting. You'll get enough butterfly wings to craft a Glossamer Saddle in 4 or 5 day.

I love these videos. I always play Wormwood and rush a beef but I'm not good with bosses or ruins yet so it's a big help to see how to improve with the playstyle I'm already using. Nice work on that day 24 tame! Also the constant supply of poop is another beefalo benefit for Wormwood. It's a great match up.

Believe it or not Walters actually a pretty strong ruins rusher! Not because of his sanity gimmick being more favorable in the ruins or the ammo you get but because he's one of the few survivors that makes a blue mush forest an option! WX has its gears. Wigfrid has her life steal and defense. And Walter has his tent and all that food in the ruins plus extra on the way.

Also you dont need to feed the beefalo for hunger you can fully tame a beefalo by riding it you only need to feed it twigs, grass or anything edible for the obedience. obedience doesnt effect the taming process only if you can saddle and ride the beefalo. Obedience doesnt even effect the riding timer. thats only effected by the taming process in short the more you ride the more you can ride in the future

the best way to get an orniery beefalo is to fight bees your character will let you know if the beefalo has less then 20% health (Except Wes) Or you can go underground to attack a slurtle. When it goes in the shell it can be attacked for ages allowing easy farming. Once is usually enough until the slurtle is dead. this is a good meathod because of the damage reduction and high health pool of the slurtle

I meant in the context of normal early game sanity drain, a careful Walter player has fewer opportunities to farm nightmare fuel casually. You can definitely force your sanity down and the methods you listed are good. PS I love getting comments on old videos!

It's worth it to farm a glossomer saddle during the first autumn. The time speed buff save is worth it.

Honestly it can be challenging. Without bundling wraps you'd have to rush a construction amulet from the ruins. You can bring a beefalo to the ruins late in the season but you won't have much time to kill butterflies once you get back up.

I'm a pvp player, and i think walter should take damage from sleep darts, they use a bee stinger as the tip and thus should deal a flat 10 damage to him regardless of armor

8:25 - The 200 vs 45 damage is distinguished by ramming vs direct hit. Players are immune to ramming. Not a huge difference in a situation where the rook is already attacking you and the beef gets the collateral damage, but if the rook targets the beefalo, it should only deal 45 damage to it. Perhaps another good opportunity for freezing attacks?

Some mobs do different damage to players versus other mobs. When you ride a beefalo the game treats it as a character for receiving damage, but when you get off it reverts back to a mob.

This is all well and good, but I'm not seeing exactly how this is supposed to promote specifically Walter. The beefalo strat is very good but it will work with any character, so I still don't see how Walter has anything to do with this. The only positive thing I took away here is the no natural sanity draining (but you picked a lot of cactus anyway), and an additional 9 inventory slots. The slingshot was used very marginally, mostly the beefalo did the combat.

I'm just trying to showcase a different playstyle that utilizes Walter's unique strengths. Some of the boss fights are slow and I wouldn't recommend Walter for a rush. Anyways it sounds like you already have a strong opinion about Walter so no sweat.

So the tl;dr of this video is that a beefalo helps manage Walter's sanity loss and there's no other tangible benefits whatsoever... the only reason you'd want to focus on this is to save time. You're not saving time managing sanity by managing a beefalo, so I don't get what you see here as "powerful". Walter's strengths never came into play, and you never did anything a Wilson couldn't have done. "Time well spent" my ass. I'll just stick this onto my gigantic pile of reasons not to touch this character outside of pvp.

I think this comment is way more toxic than it needed to be. The run is 200 days long. No, I didn't cover all of the benefits of Walter in the first season but that was never the intention. We haven't even fought any of the bosses yet and we didn't tame the beefalo until the very end. So give me a little break, please. There's a lot left to cover and I'm working hard on consolidating it all into 10-minute videos.
