@ABC, people do not understand why Cambodia decided to expand this canal, iirc the Khmer Rouge tried to do it but failed. Vietnam has been controlling the movement of vessels going to and from PP port. Depending on the political climate, Vietnamese authorities will delayed, imposed additional fees, taxes to make life difficult for vessels going to PP port. This is why Cambodia government decided to go ahead now to built the canal. No independent country in the world will allowed another country to dictate , control its waterway.

Another 173km is existing already and we only enlarging it. 51% of the share in this project is Cambodia state own enterprise in form of PPP and another 41% is Chinese private company invest as BOT. This is a very small canal. Just over 5 meters (15 feet) deep. No warships can transit this canal. Only barges. It will be good for improving irrigation and transiting agricultural products to the ocean for export. That is it.

as a vietnamese we support this project, it help cambodia less reliance on vietnam and become more indepedent country, this would help cambodia economy to grow faster. Even though we vietnam will have to suffer from the slow river flow causing sea salt flow back in, it been like that for a while now, which is bad for argiculture near the river but we accepted this for our neighbour cambodia, we don't want our relationship to deteroriate further. As for the issue we would find a way or hope both country could cooperate to find a solution, so everyone happy afterward.
