Why a Cessna 180 Tailwheel?

WHY???? Why did I buy a tailwheel?? I try to explain the rationale on why I bought a Cessna 180 as my first airplane. Beware of the naysayers. Pursue your dreams! Yes I know I referenced the rudder when it should have been the horizonal stabilizer I wanted to see if anyone noticed! LOL!

A very interesting video. I bought a C180j in 2006 down here in NZ. It was the best toy I ever bought. The flying skills I learned from that plane is exactly like you say. Your feet, wind direction and torque all going through your mind and yes tail wheel planes can bite. 😉👍🏻

I've only flown tailwheel (my Dad's (now mine) Decathlon and my CFIs C140). To me you are correct in stating that there is not much difference in the 2 different types of planes. It doesn't matter if it is a trike or a tailwheel plane. One should not quit flying the plane until it is parked, engine off, etc. The same as when one drives a car or even for the matter of riding a bicycle. You don't stop riding a bicycle until you take your foot/feet of the pedal(s).

Mark you nailed it on the head,Its nice to see some one with similiar views out there. Its like you said if you put your mind to it anybody can learn to fly..hopefully you can keep your 180 stock/original with the two bladed prop and o-470 powerplant.

The Tailwheel Aircraft in my years of flying which I started in a PA-12 Super Cruiser and this type of flying made me a better pilot and nowadays it’s great to takeoff and landing in grass strips which is more forgiving than than the asphalt. I love the challenges of having my Tailwheel experience and looking forward to flying in a 180 one day with you .

You’re right on every count. Most importantly though. You just can’t be cool in a 182. Life’s short. Skywagons forever. … true story: trying to get instrument & commercial for my son….had to rent a Warrior because no DPEs were available west of the Mississippi for the entire summer who were able to check in a 185. That right there made it worth it🤣

Haha, great video. No you don't have to fly a tailwheel to be a 'real' pilot, but there is a mystique about them. I live in Alaska and there are rows of 180's at the airports here. And yet people still stop and watch whenever a 180/185 is taking off or landing. Regarding safety, the 170/172/180/182 series of airplanes have among the safest record in general aviation. :)

I am curious Is size and weight the only difference between then 180 and 182? So biggest the draw of the 180 for you is better stol performance than the 182?

Mark, You have far more wisdom than some 10000 hour pilots that I know. You have the exact right attitude for the 180 which ultimately boils down to respect of the machine and respect of your own abilities. Enjoy the 180 and keep making 180 vids! Great job.
