This is my favorite format: when concrete decisions are dissected, instead of those essays that only say abstract ideas unrelated to particulars.

My refrain for a long time has been, "Examples are the life of essays." You can talk about anything you want. Butterflies. Movies. Shelves. If you give examples, it becomes far more entertaining for the audience, because they feel like they're actually learning something, not just listening to someone prattle.

Oh wow. I am real impressed with the set-up for this. One of my biggest complaints to other essayists is "You're trying to use the most illustrative example to really hammer home your point, when actually all you're doing is setting up a strawman. If you're so clever why don't you use an example that's not so cartoonishly ridiculous, or maybe even make a sincere attempt to play devil's advocate." So I have to be particularly appreciative of your decision to use an example of a scene that's "not terrible or anything"

This series is an excellent idea. For the next vid, try to compare how a scene works to a scene that does not work (EX. how a lot of people compare Marvel to DC).

The scene lacked a dominant POV (usually the protagonist). As such, I did not sense whose POV I was supposed to identify with. The coverage was cookie cutter, by-the-numbers. The line cross only added to the confusion of whose scene this was. That is, unless the Director, DP and editor intended on confusing the audience and taking them out of the screenstory.

I have a recommendation for this series: The Last Castle. The scene where he's being punished, and must therefore carry rocks for several hours. The scene is trying SO HARD to do something that basically any anime would have a field-day with, but it just. . . doesn't work.

Your channel reminds me a lot of Every Frame a Painting, in a good way. Wish you could continue making videos man.

I agree with you. Also the scene lacks grace. The information is spewed out by the characters ... It's a script problem. There is no game, there are no details plans .. It shows a map of the location of the weapons, the cinema is images, not a guy talking and talking ... there is no leitmotif of characters either. Everything is too flat. Except, effectively when they skip the cinematographic axis. Look at the scene of when they send him to look for Colonel Kurtz in apocalypse now ... A report is shown ... The superior military are suspicious of Marlowe, will he be able to fulfill the mission ... Anyway ... Bad cinema ...Or...Showtv

Watching your scene analysis it was hard to determine whether you had a point or were mistaken as i haven’t seen the show. It would help in future if you gave context, which would involve spoilers. If i knew she was for example part of the resistence they were talking about i might consider that a line cross could be used to be intentionally be jarring. This can convey the emotion experienced by that character like shock at the possibility of being found out. Sometimes decisions like this aren’t sloppyness, but intentional. Without broader context it’s hard to tell.

Sure, crossing the line can be used with purpose like in Punch Drunk Love or Taxi Driver but here it creates nothing but confusion. More context doesn't change that. But the show is on Netflix if you want to check it out. This is Episode 1. Let me know if you come to a different conclusion than I did.

To recap: 1)Don’t make rookie mistakes. 2)Break rules with intention, if you break some, not accidentally 3)if you dont know the rules - try know it (read, watch, mimic/replicate to see how its done). Constructors dont just randomly use materials and instruments to build a house, they learn the basics first, otherwise the house will fall down on someones head :) Creative work gives tons of abilities to break the rules for profit, do it, but learn the rules first :) Mediocre recap, and I’m ok with it :) This short videos are great stuff. Its hard to imagine so much film stuff for free in internet even 5 years ago, and its great! Finally people find a way to make youtube useful, and not store terabytes of cat videos :) P.s. I got 3 cats 🐈 🐈 🐈 , what else can I see that I haven’t been already seen? 🤣

Even though you put the time markers, there are like 10 different episodes you could be talking about lol, just saying.

I think this might be more of the writing problem. But I agree that there could have been better decisions made during the production and post production to make this scene better.

WTF was on their mind ? Of the director, the editor and the photographer ?

You're making things out of nothing. She's looking at him and he's looking at the guy wearing black jacket. It's a closeup of her followed by her pov. Yes, the editing is bad.
