Today, we have a look at the Victron EV Charging Station. This station will be installed in the Big Shed where our new EV, a GWM Ora, parks and charges.
Before this EV charging station gets installed, we will have a close look what's inside, inspect all components and trying to understand how it works.
Thanks to Off-Grid Power System in Ohio for sponsoring this Victron EV Charging Station, so we can all learn how it works and integrates.

Hi guys, thank you for the video Andy! There is already a new Charging Station (revision/ v2) out, so hopefully another friendly guy may sent it to you for a direct comparsion. Tbh I did mot like the EVCS from Victron, in Germany you need additional RCD Type which costs ~400€, other wallboxes have build those in amd are certified and tested. I installed a warp charger 2 (v3 oit some month ago) and put a script in my Cerbo GX large image NodeRed, which controls my charging. If you are interested, I may provide it to you, should work with several others, too (but may need some adaption). BR from Germany

First off you don't need a second person to connect it to power. You can do one of two ways, wire power to a terminal box and prewire the charger to connect to terminal box, or wire to socket for 3 phase and prewire the charger with the male end plug for the socket, and then you can move it if necessary.

They do have good features, but you need home assistant to make it work properly(needs to upgrade to firm ware 1.29 for additional features). I posted this issue on Victron forum, haven't had a reasonable answer yet so HA (Home Assistant) to the rescue. Auto - uses excess solar and a user configurable amount of battery before it stops. Then it waits till the next day for the sun. No good if you then need to finish the charge later, that takes manual intervention. So HA switch's mine to manual at 9pm and then charges the car to a predetermined kw, based on the Chargers current "Charged amount" vs the kw t I set on the screen in HA. Then in the morning I have a sunrise trigger that switches it back to auto. It needs to use the inbuilt schedules and have a 4th mode, that is auto by solar and then top off according to schedule to a kw of X. Which is what my HA does for me. Not Good... My "Zappi" My energy, does all this automatically, yes it does cost $400 more, but this Victron EV charger needs a Type B RCD which costs $400, Zappi its built in. That said it works great, in auto once my batteries get to 70% SOC (71% on display) the auto just keeps notching up the amps to match the solar production, so today I was charging the Tesla with 22amps free from the sun to 413km. Tesla can better manage the basic charging functions, but this manages the Auto based on available solar better. Previous vehicle was the PHEV Mitsi (EV Unplugged) and this was a dumb charge car, so the Victron made it better.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia it could make sense, it could check and monitor loads prior to turning on the charger, last thing you want to be doing is be drawing more power than the inverters can supply. Mind you, you could still have an issue if the car was charging and a heavy power draw came on from house, such as an induction hob or electric oven, could monitoring and turning down the charger save the day????

I'm looking forward to followup videos for this charging station. I'm looking to either convert my OpenEVSE to 3 phase or buy this one. There are projects to let the OpenEVSE talk as a supported EVSE to Victron, but maybe a better solution is to get a real Victron one. They are around €375 at this moment which is still more than a conversion to 3 phase of the contactor will cost me, but the OpenEVSE is around 6 years old and has done a great job. Only thing I do not like so much is that my Thetered cable will have to go. But maybe looking at this inside I can attach it to the station myself. It's already a 32A 3 phase cable. Especially with dynamic prices and an ESS onsite it will be valueable to have an all Victron setup to make it work smooth. Thanks for sharing the first bits and congrats to Silke with a nice shiny red Ora!

One thing to note when you are testing this thing, don't expect the charger / vehicle to instantly react to changes in power, e.g. if it is trying to soak up excess solar (tracking excess solar). It isn't going to track very well and there could be up to a 10 minute delay depending on what is going on. Typically smart chargers with power sharing or solar matching features have to operate very conservatively because vehicles do not instantly respond to requests. And depending on the standard, the protocol might not even communicate a specific amount of current. For example, J1772 / CCS plugs when operating in AC mode utilize a PWM signal to communicate the power request to the vehicle. If too much current is being pulled, chargers typically pull the current request (PWM signal) all the way back to the minimum (which is 6A I think), and then slowly ratchet-up the request to try to rebalance whatever metric they are using. Pulling back to minimum power is quite fast, but increasing it back to the desired value can take quite a while. -Matt

@@OffGridGarageAustraliano it’s not, you can use the EV as extra storage for the solar system.
@ando3807
@ando3807 5 ай бұрын
@@ThanosSustainable Yes. But i don't think that is the issue here. In an off-grid System there is no power there is no power coming in or going out at any time. Unlike with grid-tied systems that always have small errors in regulating the power to 0 at the grid connection (if you dont want to feed in at a retain point in daytime). So in an off-grid system there is also no point in having an extra grid-meter to measure the excess solar power because there is nowhere for it to go and the system will just end up no generating any surplus. Usually solar tracking with EV charing stations use the surplus of a grid meter as basis to adjust EV charing power. To achieve a similar behaviour in an off-grid system you would have to calculate the car's charging power in a different way - most likely with an EMS before the solar battery is fully charged (if you want it to be automated anyway). Way easier in short term is to use the charging station in manual mode, but then you have to personally manage all of your EVs yourself.

@@ericverlaet4447 Which parameter? How would the Victron system know how much solar excess there is in an off-grid situation and if the battery is full? What do you mean by 100A with the Zoe? If you speak of AC charging current, I don't think the Zoe is capable of such currents. If you mean solar system battery discharge current, how would the Zoe know how much the current in the victron dc-system is and why would the car decide not to charge below that value? I don't doubt the victron EVCS is working well with excess solar in an on-grid situation, but your statements confuse me. Hi, I've been looking at the EG 6000XP which seems to streamline everything very simply. Is there a reason why it would not be used in Australia? My husband and I have followed you for 3 years, and always intended to power our off grid home with all your knowlege helping us, but very very sadly, he has past 1:02 away, and I'm now doing it all solo. So it has to be simple. I've had every intension of using victron, because as we have switched to thst for our camper trailer, the EG4 6000XP seems to only need the distribution boards.... is it too good to be true? Not needing this separate car charger to do the car. ???

Is it just me or does it seem like the proximity pilot is not connected? The proximity pilot is used to determine what current the cable is capable of handling. Without it you could plug in a 16 amp cable to a 32 amp EVSE and a 32 amp car, and have 32 amps being drawn through the 16 amp cable. And we all know how that could end, right?

The PP has a resistor to earth in the cars side plug. This resistor controls the max Amp the cars ac charger can take using that particular cable. At the charge adapter side no PP connection is required. The actual current supplied is controlled by the CP and the 1kHz PWM signal is generated by the wall adapter.

For a Victron system it's shocking in my opinion. I bought the NS version a while ago just for testing purposes. The fact that there is no automatic switchover from 1 to 3 phases is a no-go for me. What I find worse is that the preparations are already there on the board and in the software but have not been implemented. I replaced the chint contactor with 2 25a contactors and changed the software. It works in my small system with limitations but all in all I think it's a shame that Victron brought such crap onto the market. A network port would also have been desirable.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia Not to that degree. Victron is leaning on their brand to over-price the device. There really isn't much to an EVSE. It is literally just a contactor, current sense, temperature sense (for the nozzle that plugs into the car), PWM/comms output, and a simple protocol, and its done. The most expensive part is the contactor. The network stack is built into the microprocessor.
