Sir I have a query. Its said not to have more than 10% in a single stock in the folio. Lets say I have 20 stocks with 5% allocation to each of them. For eg lets say I have 20 stocks worth 100 each totalling 2000 Rs. One of the stocks does a 5x over couple of years, while the rest of the stocks give a modest 30% return. i.e. that single stock will be around 20% of my portfolio at that point. And if had done a 10x, it would be 1/3rd of my portfolio. How to handle this situation?

In such condition,book your profit and add it to other stocks where returns on investment is expected to be on higher side ... In this way ,one can rebalance his portfolio

@@pjpspp Thanks. This makes lot of sense. But this way we can never get more than 3-4x return from fast growing stocks which do 10-20x.

I disagree with that base assumption of it never being more than 10%. You should sell it and rebalance only when the company's growth becomes subdued. For example, we'd bought shree cement at 200 and i sold some at 2600 but it went to 30000. We held most of our shares. Now if i sold shree at 30000 then i wopuld have done well because for 6 years it is at same price but in the entire march from 200 to 30000 selling anywhere was not smart. Same for ultratech, hdfc etc. Now when hdfc, shree, ultratech etc. are once again likely to break past long term resistances once again not a good time to sell. Selling makes sense when growth is subdued, stock has run up, and there are good alternative investment opportunities.
