If you look at a lot of other producer's tuts or mix rundown videos, you'll see that they use saturation on vocals (or other elements of the mix) and aren't hiding it. It's a well known trick since mixing in the digital domain :).

@@excelmckaterny It won't make it sounds like mixing on an nice analog desk tho' (plugins behave, react and sound differently, even without mentioning summing), but it can give you an approximation of it.

This was SO helpful. I have been doing our own mixing/mastering on our channel, and despite having over 200K subs, I'm not super great at it yet. It's good enough for fans to enjoy, but the more I learn about audio, the more picky I am becoming, and the better I want to do for our channel. Although the style of our music is quite different than your examples, I think that everything you explain can be taken and used on a multitude of styles. Thanks for these videos!!! Definitely subbing!

Devvon you're the truth bro. I've been listening to your music for years and I was surprised to learn how gifted you are at engineering as well. I've always felt like it's not fair how much talent you have, but I'm glad you're using it to help others. I just started to discover this concept. In logic you can click on saturation in the compressors and I noticed it fattens up the vocals. Previously I had always been afraid of saturation on a vocal because I equated it with guitar distortion!

I like it.. depends on the vocal chain.. if you’re using a cheap mic cheap interface etc etc.. be careful it’ll bring those ringy cheap frequencies out.. emulations with compression tape eq etc etc.. it all sounds good if your vocal chain is top notch.. if it ain’t don’t be surprised if your vocals don’t come out like your references.. just it is what it is.. idk what mic this is but It sounds decent and It can definitely hear it with saturation..

I do mostly hard rock and metal and saturated guitar sounds with added harmonics are very common but after watching this video it finally clicks for me as far vocals go, as you said analog saturation through driving the preamp slightly adds harmonics essentially adding more content to the recording thus making it richer and fuller!! thanks man eye (ear) opening for sure
