Welcome to My Video Description,
Bharti Airtel managing director Gopal Vittal said the telecom operator hasn’t suffered any loss of 5G customers yet, but it did see some SIM consolidation at the lower end (2G) of the market after the tariff hikes of 11-20% last month.
The nation’s second-largest telco added 15 million 5G users on a net basis in the June quarter, below rival Reliance Jio’s 22 million. Airtel’s 5G user base has risen to 90 million as of end-June, compared with Jio’s 130 million. “There’s been no cool-off on the 5G front.
We have not seen, and don’t foresee any 5G customer dropouts, nor is there much downtrading among data users.
But by and large, we’ve seen a modest SIM consolidation at the lower end of the market in the 2G space following the recent tariff repair,” Vittal said during Airtel's fiscal first-quarter earnings call Tuesday.
Airtel’s immediate objective is getting 5G users to opt for the right (revenue generating) data plan, he said, adding that greater clarity on the overall impact of the price hike on recharge cycles would emerge by the end of the ongoing second quarter. As part of the recent hike in mobile tariffs, Airtel changed the entry-level pricing for customers wanting to go 5G. They now need to take a big upgrade to a Rs 379 base monthly pack (offering a 2GB a day data allowance) in place of the earlier Rs 239 pack offering 1.5 GB/day.
During the call, Airtel’s leadership termed as “speculative” the recent buzz around a potential merger of the telco’s data centre arm, Nxtra Data Ltd (NDL), and Indus Towers, in which it is also the largest stakeholder. Last month, the Sunil Mittal-led telco boosted its stake in the telecom tower company to 48.95%.
