Correction: shown at 0:22 is an FAL, at 0:29 a a PKM, and at 7:28 is a PKM. My mistake. Most guns in the AK family are referred to as an "AK-47" intentionally. It's the name that has come to mean the entire platform to most people. I think nitpicking every variant would (although make a more accurate gun identification video) actually detract from the main message that the economics of the AK-47 is the reason it's so widespread.

I noticed that and I was going to say something. You caught it. Also, it really is the AKM and not the AK-47. Damn, you got that one too. The Americans losing to farmers never really happened though. Vietnam was a war that the North Vietnamese never won a battle, but they still won the war. Also, once the powder issue was sorted out, many U.S. soldiers began to love the M-16. That is why it is proudly serving in Ukraine, the UK and Canada etc. today. The AK was spread all over Africa and the Middle East, and this is probably why it became so beloved. The ease of manufacture also made it proliferate so widely. Good video. I enjoyed it.

When I was young my very first gun on the farm was a 22 bolt action long rifle. My very next rifle I grew up with was the AK-47. I loved that rifle, it is the best rifle. I like it more than I like the AR-15. In the country you might become acquainted with rifles by age 12, and learn to hunt, fish, build a fire, skin an animal, and hang and butcher a carcass. I am glad I grew up learning how to do things, the newer generations will never learn to do these things. If the world broke out into war or disaster there could be piles of other types of rifles around, I will pick the AK-47 every time. When shooting a great distances a 30-06 with a scope is wonderful. For anything that is at a medium range, the AK-47 will be a reliable tool.

Yeah... But that s*** that an AK47 often can't even shoot straight is just cringe. Even an AK will need a new barrel after several thousand shots. It's sad that even a child can strip and clean them after only one hour learning but that means that adults are able to operate them in any condition and take care of them (cleaning and... Stuff) everywhere they are. The gun is reliable and most AK Rifles are operating almost as good as their western counterparts. Most assault rifles are most effective in a range of ca. 300 meters. And the AK is not special in this regard.

7:43 The M16 was a brilliant and nearly perfect gun, that was sabotaged by the US Ordinance Dept, they changed the gunpowder used in it's ammo (forcing the gun to endure 55,000 PSI instead of the 40,000 it was designed for), changed it's barrel twist rate, mandated it to have a useless forward assist, and told soldiers it never needed to be cleaned. They literally did everything they could to sabotage the weapon, because they were pissed they had to switch away from the Springfield Armory M14, which was a barely improved M1 Garand. The M16's that the Air Force got, and the M16's given to the South Vietnamese for trials, were the non-sabotaged ones, and these pre-dated the sabotaged guns and received universal praise for how they performed.

The part about them not shooting straight is a bit of ignorance that came from some US service men stationed in Afghanistan, they tested AKs that the taliban had and found them to be inaccurate, not knowing that these rifles had been around the world in several conflicts without ever having their barrels changed, the rifling in the barrels where basically non existent making it an almost smoothbore rifle and therefor inaccurate and that would be the case for any rifle, no gun has a life time barrel. But nice that you mentioned that the rifles we see are AKMs and not 47s its a huge misconception and actual 47s are rare and collectables at this point

@cannedgoose32592 күн бұрын
7:38 Okay as a massive gun nerd and overall militaria enjoyer I need to set some facts straight about the whole M16 vs AK thing. TL;DR: The M16 was not as bad as everyone believes it to be, the issues had more to do with the supply chain and hubris of the US command than it did the rifle itself. The United States entered the Vietnam war with a massively inferior rifle, the M14, which was accurate and had good ballistics, but was hard to control in fully automatic fire and was EXTREMELY HEAVY thanks to its thick wooden stock. The rifle used a rather similar internal system to the M1 Garand, which was reliable and had many kinks ironed out, but it of course wasn't perfect. Eventually, the AR-10 and AR-15 hit the market, and the United States bought in with the M16. This was huge for the Vietnam war, as the M16 was MUCH LIGHTER than the M14, extremely controllable to fire in fully automatic, and the 5.56x45mm round had very good ballistic performance that, while not a true competitor to the M14's 7.62x51mm, made it a very reasonable choice for the average infantryman. The other great thing about the AR-15 system is how its internals work. It uses a "Direct Impingement" gas system which basically just uses the gas from the expanding gunpowder to cycle the action and chamber another round. The system is very straightforward (you might even say direct) and made the AR-15 very reliable, especially in fully automatic fire. This is where the kinda-not-really-myth of the M16's inferior reliability begins: When the AR-15 was initially designed, the designer (a legendary man named Eugene Stoner) happened to be using very clean-burning gunpowder which went very easy on the internals of the rifle, especially the barrel. The Army, conversely, was using gunpowder that burned much dirtier, leaving more carbon buildup on the inside of the barrel. This is something called "fouling" and its extremely easy to clean out if you regularly maintain the rifle. The problem was, the higher-ups in the US armed forces responsible for the procurement of the M16 had a massive ego! They saw how reliable the AR-15 supposedly was in trials and (verbatim) said: "It is so reliable we won't even need cleaning kits!" Those of you following along will see the problem in this mentality. The gun itself was excellent, soldiers loved the M16 during the first few stretches before it got really dirty, but of course between the thick jungle conditions, the carbon-heavy gunpowder the army was using, and the effective absence of cleaning kits or even cleaning materials in the area, the M16s got plugged up really bad and only then did they become a liability. Once the US had realized their mistake, they began to issue cleaning kits and replacement barrels, and the problems basically up-and-disappeared. Most soldiers towards the end of the Vietnam war were very fond of their M16s, even if the reputation had been sullied shortly beforehand. Another thing people refuse to talk about is the often severe reliability issues that the AK actually had in it's early service too! People don't like to talk about it because "muh ak" but while I love the Kalashnikov as much as the next guy, the AK actually had considerably worse issues than the M16 before they were rectified. The chief issues among them had to do with overall structural integrity of the rifle. The problem with gun manufacturing is that if you try and do so on the scale that the Soviet Union wanted to do, there are bound to be major shortcuts in design, fabrication, and material sourcing. The sheet metal that original AKs were using could sometimes be so inexpensive that the rifle would break before it even made it out of the factory! You wouldn't want something that brittle in your hands as a soldier. Additionally, the 7.62x39mm round that initial pattern AKs fired using gunpowder that burned even dirtier than the US armed forces surplus ammunition, and due to the fouling that would build up in the barrel, an AK's individual lifespan could be drastically reduced if not cleaned with intensity. Another thing I will mention is that while the Soviets had their AK production down-pat by Vietnam, the Vietnamese actually used a considerably larger amount of Chinese-made AKs. China is excellent at making things cheap, but not so good at making things built to last, so you can imagine how that went down in the field when a Vietnamese fighter needed it most. The Vietnamese also used a considerable amount of Chinese ammunition too, which if you can believe it, burned EVEN DIRTIER than the Soviet ammo. Go figure. All that said, the AK and M16 are both excellent rifles which I believe have earned their place in both pop culture and modern warfare. There is a time and place for sophistication, and as feature-packed and customizable as the AR-15 is, the AK is sometimes the best option on a budget. This is already long enough so if you want my sources or any additional discourse, we can chat in the replies. Rant over :)

It's actually a myth that the ak-47 can be dragged through the mud / snow / sand and still work, it's not that reliable. However what made it so reliable was not that it could survive the elements better, but that it didn't require as much care in order to function. Something like and AR - type weapon will survive / work better than an Ak - type weapon in extreme conditions, it's merely the fact the AR will require more care for it to reach this type of reliability. Garand thumb tested this go check his video.

@@AKAK-rh7lr To be more specific, at 2:20, while talking about automatic rifles, which are rifles capable of full auto fire, he shows the select-fire variant of the Mauser C96 *Pistol*, then he proceeds to show the Mauser bolt-action rifle (obviously not capable of full auto), the M1 Garand (semi auto but not full auto), the Fedorov Avtomat (obscure and low production count, don't even know how or why he brought it up), and the MkB42 also known as the StG 44 (this one is fine). The section comparing the amount of guns produced between the AK platform and M16 (and its variants) is incredibly misleading and ignores various other guns. First of all, he compares the AK with all its variants to the M16 with all its variants, when for example, the M4 is for all intents and purposes literally just a shorter M16. He completely leaves out every other gun, like the Mauser Gewehr 98 bolt action rifle, of which, about 102 million were made throughout the entire world, and the Mosin Nagant, which boasts 37 million made. Both are ALSO used by insurgencies all over the world by the way. To make it even worse, one of the guns he corrected, specifically the one at 7:29 isn't even correct, it's not a PKM, it's a PPSh. That's just the worst examples, though there's other examples, like using an AR15 instead of an M16 for vietnam, and completely glossing over WHY the M16 had initial issues in Vietnam (TLDR, politics and sabotage by army generals).

TLDR: It's cheap, it's reliable in any condition, it's rechamberable in almost any cartridge from 9x18mm to 50 BMG. It contains very few parts to the point that a child can disassemble and reassemble it in under a minute. It can endure an ungodly amount of punishment (including being filled with Heinz Beans). Customization can be done by a flip of a latch or the replacement of the dust cover (wouldn't recommend). And the cartridge (7.62, 5.45) alongside the gun itself is so plentiful that you can find it everywhere.
