I'd stay Anderson started declining after he was 35 (he took a lot of damage in the first Chael fight), but it was a very gradual process that wasn't particularly noticeable until after the leg break. Regardless, the fact he was still a cut above his peers until he was 37 when Chris Weidman came along speaks to how good Anderson was.

I just turned 48 last month and had my amateur debut (kickboxing) a little over a week ago! Took a last minute fight that someone else pulled out of. Got the call from my management on Tuesday night, right before work (I work nights as security), started cutting weight at that moment, made weight by Thursday night, went right to work after weigh-ins, and was fighting Friday night. I am now training for the next one in December. I have never felt stronger or more fit than I do now. Not even in my 20s. Physically, the only difference I have noticed is that I need more time to stretch. If I don't, I pay for it later. Mentally, I am ready now. I was not as driven, disciplined, or focused in my 20s or 30s. I made sure to always put time and effort on the mental training part, which it seems not every fighter does. In my opinion, it makes a HUGE difference!

That call was disputed by my management team and is currently under review due to the fact that I was actively fighting and defending myself right as he cut in between my opponent and myself. I kept telling him I was not hurt and to let me get back in and he refused. Even the ring doctor was confused. Never heard a man get a stoppage due to age being a concern... Have you? Does kickboxing help in street fights
@peepo192 жыл бұрын
@@truthhurts6327 Any combat training helps, although I wouldn't recommend kickboxing FOR street fights. That's because you will have habits that might not work for you on the streets, for example blocking is very different without gloves. If you find yourself in a street fight try to end it quick, use your elbows (to protect those fragile knuckles) and avoid high kicks as you can easily slip, if you slip you're dead. Front kicks are fine if you have trained your balance. Where any martial art training comes in is in mental, the ability to stay calm under immediate physical threat, reflexes, general physical conditioning. And if your teacher teaches you some open handed technique that's always a plus!

One peculiar thing about MMA compared to other combat sports is how infrequently guys fight in the UFC. Most of the guys on the roster are lucky to get 3 fights a year. It's important to get real fight experience, not just hard sparing. It really helps you develop. Makes sense that fighters hit their peaks later than boxers or kickboxers usually do. As much as I roll my eyes at boxing prospects who are 20-0, 19 of those wins coming against guys who don't have a Wikipedia, there's logic behind getting enough fights in before you start fighting high level competition. Too many prospects have had their careers derailed because they signed with the UFC after 3 fights and started fighting top talent waaaaaaay too soon. More guys would be better off taking the Khabib approach of getting 12-15 fights at the regional level before making the leap.
@madgavin75682 жыл бұрын
Its also a good idea to get plenty of experience in amateur fights as well before starting your professional career.
@shahidabdoullakhanzorovr15642 жыл бұрын
There was nothing rare or unique about Khabib's approach. It's always smart to get as much experience as early as possible before the big show. People just didn't like the fact that he stayed undefeated, and automatically assumed that that meant that he fought easy competition. But those same people conveniently ignored the fact that some of their own favorite fighters have *losses* on their records from the regional scene to guys with no Wikipedia pages.

But years later I discovered the fountain of youth. Kick boxing again at 47yrs old and now at 55yrs old. I have stayed steady at 5'10 @ 165 lb and feel great ! But very humbling to except I would never be the Superman like I once felt like as a younger man I'm ok being a sidekick like Batman's Robin now. I train hard twice a week and more if possible but as an old guy I need more recovery time. "dam" .. Late 40's and 50's the mental fight begins. I train to stay healthy and try my best to not let my ego compete with the younger guys "I'll get my ass kicked". I'm still strong and flexible. Cardio management and my old shoulder tendons are my secrets. "Shhhhh Don't tell the younger guy" .

Gabriel, I like what you mentioned in the end that you did NOT got out knowing you couldn't win anyway just to show how tought you are. You can see with guys who did that and just got a severe beating without any chances (i.e. Ferguson vs Gaethje, JDS vs Velasquez 2&3, Smith vs Teixeira) that after that beating they became worse fighters and hesitant to pull the trigger. Getting completely beat up to a bloody pulp and convincing your brain there is no way out takes a huge mental toll apparently, thus they become hesitant in future fights. Contrastingly, when you show your brain that there is a way out of that kind of beating by just throwing the towel, subconsciously, you're mentally more willing to go in there the next time as you know there is no real danger of getting beat up that badly.

Also if you are getting KO'd in sparring sessions your brain probably isnt going to last that long either. Also the older person is probably more calmer and can see more things, and probably has raw more muscle memory. Plus it takes MANY years to perfect timing and efficiency and burn the data in to your bones.

MMA is a jack of all trades sport, it's not a specialized sport like boxing or wrestling, where the participants are required to start from a very young age, in order to build muscle memory and conditioning. MMA allows one to exploit the weaknesses of their opponents. However, in boxing or wrestling, since both contenders are practicing the same art, that leaves very little room to exploit, since you're basically practicing the same art. It's just like in the Olympics, in any sports category, there has rarely been anyone over the age of 40 competing in physical demanding sports in the Olympics. However, in MMA, it's different. In MMA, If your opponent excels at striking, that could mean he's weaker in grappling, your best strategy would be using grappling against him. Hence, plenty of fighters in MMA are over their 30s.

I wonder abit about MMA haveing so many skills required also being a factor. So you need to get good at more things, which take more time. While many other sports, combat sports included, are more honed in on one skill, MMA have so many avenues to loose. If you arent good enough at striking, wrestling AND submissions you will loose. Especially at the top level. I am ofc aware that, for instance, boxing has many skills in it. But what I mean is that its more focused. You can get good at a smaller number of things and still excel, as compared to mma.
@pheonixlucifer10022 жыл бұрын
Interesting comparison. Yes there are many more ways to lose in MMA; getting out wrestled to a decision, falling in to a submission of a fight you were winning, getting TKO'd from a flurry of elbow's etc. With that being said, MMA requires less "mastering". Boxing requires more mastering than any combat sport, because you're only fighting with your hands & feet (footworks, pivoting etc) the skill ceiling is significantly higher than it is in MMA. On paper there are "fewer things to learn" in boxing, but due to there being fewer variety of strikes to throw & defend, most boxers must be exceptional at blocking, avoiding, parrying, pivoting, setting traps, understanding ring positioning, feet positioning, hand positioning when punching etc. leaving less room for error. where as in MMA most fighters, especially champions are very good at everything but exceed in one thing (striking, wrestling etc) but of course cannot master everything to an equal level, which lowers the skill ceiling because at this point it's unrealistic. Boxers must master every aspect of the sport to succeed, MMA fighters do not. Being a champion in either sport of course at the highest level is difficult, but it is more & will always be more difficult to do in boxing.

Both, as you age, naturally you'll become less durable. Regardless of your profession your body will naturally become more vulnerable to damage, falls, heavy lifting etc. Receiving excess damage in training, be it damage to the skull/ brain & body in sparring or the minor - significant injuries you get as you've been training for years, your body & chin will be more susceptible to absorbing catastrophic damage that at a younger age when you'd have received less damage from. As I said they go hand in hand, any man in his 50's that may not have ever had a fight (absorbed no chin/ brain damage) is going to get dropped much easier than he would've in his mid 20's.

So I'm 29 and wanna get into mma and Mauy Thai and compete a bit. 29 won't be too late to start? Hypothetically speaking

Which UFC champion is under 30? i don't know of one off the top of my head.
@calneon6549 Жыл бұрын
Not a single fighter age 35 or older has won a single title fight at lightweight or below. If we take away Tyrone Woolley it’s not a single fighter at welterweight or below - Tyrone won two title fights when he was 35 but one was again another 35 plus fighter and the other was against non title ready Darren Till. It seems MMA peak is in early 30s but does not extend beyond mid 30s in the lower weight classes.

how many of these champions only started training when they were in their 30s?
@yeshuasage37242 жыл бұрын

Before watching the video I assume it’s because it takes years to learn and get good at multiple martial arts

You're more likely to accumulate injuries at you 30' than younger. Even with injuries, i'm stronger and 'jaw resistant' at my late 30 than 20. I'm just more tough. There's other sports made for younger ppl. But fighting in general needs maturity

I've always said 33 is when you're in your prime

Depends on the individual, Mayweather was at his sharpest when he was 36, Anderson Silva was at his sharpest at 34, Bud Crawford is 34 & is looking more precise than ever. There are many examples of men in the mid 20's being at their pinnacle & many of men being in their 30's. Though I find more "greats" tend to peak at 32-36.

Because UFC has poor athletes compared to other sports, boxing and muay thai as an example.
