Hey there Dave, Im 20 and a player for my men's club team in Ontario Canada, I wanted to ask you if I could still make large leaps in my skill as a player in the next few years. I'm training consistently, but I'm concerned I'm a little old, I want to play at the highest level that my potential can take me, it's my first year with the men's team and I'm a squad player, I'd like to be the best player on the team in a year or two, is it possible to improve to that level given my circumstances? Any feed back would be great

YES i am glad you realize it on time. Work hard but not only hard but the way that works for you. Be sure to have people ( how have experience with football) who support and push you forward in the right way. But you know you need the best so work on those things you think you have to master to suceed. Another tip: listen to your body don't push your self to hard. Rest is also very important. I am sure already know these things but i like to remind people some important stuff. 😀

"The hard work and the smart work is what is going to get you there." The clarity of your message about personal discipline and the honest, simple, direct example expressed through your personal storytelling is very much appreciated. I showed this video to my kids and we talked about what you said and the choices they make every day. When I asked about an example of a choice they make that does not contribute to them fulfilling their personal goals they both said, "Fortnite." Your message is so true in EVERY aspect of their lives, not just soccer, and I really appreciate you taking the time (and putting in the thought and effort) to share this important message. It reminds me of a line from song Subdivisions by Rush - "Some will sell their dreams for small desires". Unfortunately it is not just "some", it is most. :( Thank you again for consistently providing great soccer (and LIFE) related content on youtube. Your messages are always helpful and you are having a positive impact on a lot of young players.
@SimplySoccer6 жыл бұрын
No problem, John! I appreciate you sharing it with your kids because it definitely is an important lesson. It's very true that many sell their dreams for small desires like those song lyrics suggest. The upside is it implies that those who actually do develop discipline and consistency can live their dreams and have very fulfilling lives. We all have the potential to do so if we make the choices that align with what it is we want.

I don't need to be fantastic, but to be able to support my team mates and see progress within myself. More importantly I have a 1 year old son who is completely obsessed with football. He does nothing else. You talking about being talented but not knowing about discipline and grit and systematical training really affected me. This was a very good video It does take sweat and tears and hardship, absolutely right Sadly we live in a society that's quite spoilt with "unearned" praise... One thing I've tried to do, my son, only U8s (but, the reason I watch these videos, and even became interested in sports at all, etc), is try to keep his ego flat...since he started in the local little kickers program he's had people coming up and telling him how "good" he is (adults, team mates, coaches, coaches from other teams asking him to join their club, even recently some random strangers at last weekends match, etc)...it's hard to correct that. I am stuck trying to remind him, it's because of the hard work he has done...and that if he wants to stay at a "high level", it will take even more of that effort and hard work...that he may be the best in his team, but it's because of the effort he has put in...but I admit, it;s tough to have to pull your child down a bit
@SimplySoccer6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, mate! It definitely is a balancing act. You want to equally encourage your kid without it going to his head. I agree that we live in a society now where every kid gets a trophy for simply participating. I get the gesture, but it teaches kids that regardless of how hard you work or how well you do, you get a reward. Not only is that the wrong message to give kids who will be entering a very competitive environment when they are playing with older kids, it also isn't great for the kids who are working hard because they may become discouraged. The only thing to really do is tell your kid to have fun at this age and enjoy it. If you feel praise is going to his head, you can always gently remind him that there is always room to improve. Once he gets older and he's about to enter his teens, if he decides he wants to become a good footballer, you can always make sure he understands how much true dedication, work and commitment it takes. Do it from a place of love, but the sooner he understands the reality of what he's trying to pursue, the sooner he can decide whether or not to go in that direction. Then if he does, he'll be aware of what he needs to do. That's just personally what I would do. Everyone has a different approach. All I know is that telling a young kid that they are just naturally gifted isn't always the way to go. One thing Steven Gerrards dad said to him when he was young was "you get out of football what you put into it". I think that's a really good way of putting it.
@LoveBagpipes6 жыл бұрын
Beautiful sentiment Already, being a footballer is all he wants to do Your videos have helped alot in helping me, understand how to help him in that dream (whether it goes far, or doesn't) 'cause lord knows I'm no sportsman!!! :D (I have improved watching and trying out stuff from your vids, and those like it, though)

I completely related to your story. I felt like when I was growing up, people would always tell me that I was talented and a natural soccer. Those words really affected me because I felt like I was the best and because I felt that way I did not work hard enough to make it to the pro levels. I dreamed of playing for the US women's national team and not making it has been the biggest regret of my life. I even went through a phase of depression in my first two years of college because I didn't get the opportunity to play ball. Today, I am feeling better and grateful with my creator. I have accepted the fact that I may never make it to the pro level but I still want to work hard to get to the best level that I can get to for myself. I know what giving up and not working hard feels like. Now I want to see what it feel like to not give up and work hard. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm glad to share with you that I have healed and have been able to move on. I'm looking forward to the future and seeing where my hard work will take me.

I was never "talented" and i have only played soccer for 3 years and sometimes it can be challenging when u have to play againts someone who has played longer then i have... then I have to remind myself that sometimes it doesn't matter how long my oponent has played, but what matters is their skills. I don’t care if you’re a pro or not, I think your advices and drills are priceless :). Thank you a lot. And, if you allow me to be honest, I would rather use “my responsibility” instead of “my fault”. I think they differ slightly ;). And finally, I’ve never been a soccer fan; I mean, I played soccer in a club like 99% of Spanish kids but as I grew older and my running skills were faaaar better than my football abilities, I ended up training track&field (that really helped me understand what discipline really was). However since I started to watch your videos (especially the play as a wing and the drills ones) I’ve started to play soccer again (mostly indoor) with my friends. And, following your advice, I began to express myself playing the game. I’m feeling much happier and it’s so much fun now. Gracias :).

Ty u dud u really helping me with ur video I am 14 and I don’t have a lot of confidence but now for listening to this video I ahve mor confidence

I’ve never really had that much confidence either, still don’t. And I’m not that great a player either but your videos encouraged me to learn the mental side of the game, and I’ve been playing better. I’m enjoying the game more but I’m still not as good as the other players in my league. So Im taking all of the advice in this and I’m going to discipline myself, I’m gonna practice, work out, eat terrible tasting but healthy food. And I have tryouts this fall, so I really need this. Thank you for the advice, I think that now I can definitely make the team and develop as a player.
