Blaming the criminal is a losing argument because they're not going to change without an outside force helping them. Deterrance is not enough; at best, you're just disabling people who will beg and steal or will intentionally get into a institutions like homeless shelters, Jails/Prisons, group homes, or psychiatric hospitals.

One of the core elements seems to be a total lack of respect for eachother and a sense of lawlessness and anarchy. Nobody trusts institutions or eachother. It's easy to point the finger at one group or another to explain it all but that's part of the problem, there's a huge number of contributors and no one seems to be willing to try and unite people.

There is often lack of respect from many people. There are so many people that are inconsiderate and would put money before another person's well being. I thought that majority of people in the United States would come together and overcome our differences after the lockdown mandate was suspended but, it seemed like majority of people didn't see it as a breath of fresh air towards peace.

It’s laughable to blame the "pandemic" and guns. The problem in America is a generation + of people growing up with no discipline or consequences, and being taught to have an outright disrespect of the law. Not to mention media glorification of violence and coverage of its perpetrators, narcissism/social media, profit driven division by media and politicians… TLDR, America needs better people and better leaders.

The Economist missed what I think may be one of the largest factors driving crime in Chicago, and that is online learning. I have heard from teachers in Chicago that tons of the students who typically struggled with attendance pre-pandemic completely stopped attending school all together when they were doing remote learning. For lots of these kids if they aren’t in school they are getting into trouble. That means they were getting into much more trouble during remote learning, leading to the crime spiral it’s dealing with now.

Thank You for writing my comment for me. The Economist would be better than most left-leaning publications at hiding the reality, but it's exactly what you mention and it never winds up any other way. Thus Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Franscico, Seattle to name just a few have been made unlivable in an instant. You can always spot the liberal with their deflections. "it was caused by covid" "It was caused by guns" etc. It's always hidden by the lamestream media and the liberal voter looks only at fantasy and wishful thinking for both cause and results.

First priority is to admit that most of the crime are occurring in specific neighborhoods, in specific cities, by a specific racial group. How do you reduce crime when most criminals have been raised either by a single mom or a grandmother? Quality education does not exist, poverty is all around, politicians could care less, and over 400-500 million guns are in circulation.
@constructionzonebc2295
@constructionzonebc2295 2 жыл бұрын
I'm curious, who are you looking to blame? What specific "racial group" do you feel is responsible for gun violence? "400-500 million guns are in circulation" is your problem, and they are in everyones hands.
@MaximGhost
@MaximGhost 2 жыл бұрын
@@constructionzonebc2295 Don't play dumb. Look at that stats for which "racial group" he is referring to. Politicians in this very same high-crime rate areas have decriminalized riotiting, shoplifting, drugs, petty theft, muggins, and even carjacking. It's a free-for-all in most of these radicalized cities. With no police response due to defunding by "progressive" politicians, police no longer respond to 911 calls. This means LAW-ABIDING members from the same "racial group" must protect themselves. They do that by buying a gun to stay ALIVE in a city with no law and order. You blaming INANIMATE guns is the typical response from the very same "progressive" who don't want to kick the hornet's nest because blaming criminals who are predominately from said "racial group" would be racist ... and voters don't like racist politicians, even if they too have the same skin color. Everyone says George Floyd is a hero but these are the same people who completely ignore that fact that Floyd was buying cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. That he was in and out of jail EIGHT times for drug possession, theft, trespassing, and assault. He spent most of time in jail in Texas where there IS law and order and LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of guns. A lifetime felon and grifter couldn't handle law and order like that so Floyd moved to Minneapolis where he figured he'd get a free pass. But, it took one bad cop to put an end to that fantasy. Floyd would have died young either way as most felons do. Had Floyd stayed in Texas, he would have likely been shot dead during an attempted burglary ... and the homeowner would have likely got a pat on the back by the local police chief ... despite the fact that the homeowner and the police chief and mayor of that city in Texas would all be in the same "racial group" as George Floyd. If you don't believe me, then look up the demographics of Houston, Texas, where Floyd lived.

This report can't keep its story straight. It claims the surge in legal gun ownership is responsible for the spike in violence then later says that a small percentage of criminals (who are prohibited from owning guns) are responsible for that violence. So which is it? The use of violence interrupters is not new. Previous efforts in Chicago were disbanded when they were infiltrated by gangs and used their status to carry out reprisals on rivals. The report never mentions the rise of drug trafficking or the release of violent criminals from jail or prison during the Pandemic. Or cashless bail so that violent repeat offenders are set loose. See NYC and LA. If you think Chicago violence is bad now, come back in 2023 when Illinois' SAFE Act kicks in.

That doesn't change the fact that ease of access to guns and lack of oversight into who gets to have them plays a role in translating and magnifying the impact of other socio-economic factors into crime and gun violence. The fact that any conversation with gun 'rights' activist on the impact of lax gun laws on gun violence is put to an end with "It's my right" speaks volumes about how they don't have any meaningful and logical argument against the topic or perhaps that deep down they also know that there is a relationship between lax gun laws and gun violence.

12:40 Yes, the US (& many other countries as well) should re-evaluate how it enforces the law. It is important to understand that law enforcement officers are public servants and to uphold the principle of “innocence until proven guilty”. Yet many police officers overstep their authority once given the badge and gun. Like the classic Stanford Prison Experiment, the ‘guards’ became increasingly cruel and tyrannical. Enforcement agencies need to engage the people and work as an equal partner with the community AGAINST criminals.

Few US Americans seem to appreciate that is solely the function of the courts to dispense justice. It is the function to investigate crime, gather evidence, arrest suspects, alive and unharmed and put both before the courts for examination. The USis unfortunate to have large numbers of none too bright, ex military in their numbers. uzs cops are generally poorly educated, carelessly selected, inadequately trained, poorly supervised and ill disciplined. They shoot in excess of 2,100 citizens annually. Their appalling behaviour commonly results in street riots and protest. In Norway, our police service, polices by consent. They are generally intelligent, carefully selected, well trained over 3 years, well educated, carefully supervised and well disciplined. They don’t routinely carry guns. In an average year they shoot at absolutely nobody. Police are rarely injured on duty.. we have low crime rates and very little gun crime. We have some 17 homicides annually from a population of some 5.5 million people. Our prisons are humane and not at all full. We have a 5 year recidivism rate about 25% of that in the US. I have no need of a gun here.

My country, Singapore is famed for safety where even replica guns are forbidden. Our officers don’t have to worry about being shot at but that’s just half the job. In order to solve a crime or to enforce a state order, they need community’s cooperation. Police need to engage the community to earn their trust and also to exhibit fairness. This video article does not go deep enough into the problem. In addition to what was mentioned, violent crime has escalated because of a lessened police presence fueled by retirements and getting qualified cadets onboard. Police are overwhelmed by the profuse number of police reports and only show up for the most serious of cases involving gun shots or reports of violence involving guns. Police don't want to assume liability so they do nothing in most cases, only refer citizens to file complaints online. Lawmakers have lessened punitive measures towards criminals and underaged youth who are often set free with no repercussions. Store owners often don't report crime since any inordinate number of losses would increase their insurance. Criminals seem emboldened and now it has become a trend to follow citizens wearing expensive jewelry home where they would commit a robbery or home invasion.

A new approach is needed but those in power really don't care ... after all it's mostly black on black violence. Also Police procedures need reform but there's no discussion on this issue ... just more violence.

guns arent the problem left wing policies places with more guns have less crime. The more people that own guns the harder it is for criminals break into cars and houses because instead of being recorded on a smartphone they get shot or detained by a concerned citizen. Then they get sentenced to 7+ years. while in chicago or sf they get a few weeks in county jail.

Nobody is born depraved. Look at the environment and generational poverty and crime these kids grow up in, specifically in Chicago. U don’t get it. You’ll never get it. It’s easy do dismiss this as just “people are born bad” instead of understanding the many nuances of living in these environments.

@@Notimportant3737 We are products of both. We've known for a while now that our genes and our environment interact with each other. The environment alone cannot shape the person. The video questions why said "places" will not cooperate. Perhaps it's the mistrust of law enforcement and/or the judicial system? People generally don't act against their self-interest or survival. The author is seeking a comprehensive answer rather than surface-level assumptions. But let's discuss 'culture', American 'culture' from north to south countries founded and built on violence. Native genocide and African human trafficking and enslavement. Then legal segregation, subjugation and discrimination...Yeah, I guess violence is American culture. In 2001, there were 21,312 murders in the U.S. But the American homicide rate is extremely stratified by population groups. If we can bring down the Black homicide rate to the rate of non Black Americans (White, Hispanic, Asian and American Indian), then approximately 10,000 mostly Black lives would be saved every year. If the non Black American homicide rate exploded to equal the Black homicide rate, the number of murders would quadruple to over 84,000 per year versus the actual 21,000.
