You are so correct, this type of work takes a toll on your health. At 56, I am in pain from mechanical work and want to give it up everyday but business is booming and hard to turn it down.

They're not offered competitive salaries. Instead they're offered a commissioned percentage at a rate that's stuck in the past. Meanwhile the hourly billing rate has skyrocketed. In addition, tool expansion makes profitably very tough. Interesting field but discouraging for financial success.

No other job do you have to spend hundreds of dollars to buy tools to have a job. If dealer want to get mechanics, pay them to buy tools. That would make them less greedy not going to happen. All the equipment manufacturers bitch and moan for mechanics yet under pay and not supplying tools. This is the fault of manufacturers putting 5 or more computers which makes easy to manufacturer but mechanics can't repair.

As a retired diesel mechanic every single word is totally true. They are making everything so high tech that mechanics and diesel mechanics cannot keep up for one. Two you have to spend 30,000 to 40,000 thousand of dollars or more to fix these vehicles. Third some vehicles cannot be worked on by your regular mechanic shop the vehicle can only be fixed by the dealer shop it self because there have specialized equipment that is made to only work on that vehicle. Mechanics shops do not have the software for these vehicles because car companies won’t let you buy them and if you did they would charge you a arm and a leg for the software for that vehicle it wouldn’t be cost effective for the mechanic shop it would put them out of business. Beware of what car you buy today some of them only be fixed at the dealer ship. I know one dealer ship you cannot even do a simple brake job on you need software to reset the brake system before and after you are done. And we all know how much dealerships charge an arm and a leg today.
