The warranty pay is why I finally cut and run Kyle!! I was close to being a ASE and GM certified Master Mechanic took all the tests went to St. Clair in Dayton for my GM classes and got my years of finger knowledge, to be given a water leak job on a G6 with Panoramic sunroof, you basically gut the interior to fix the leak and dry everything out, put it back together in a day maybe, then Service Writer says warranty pays 4 hours!!! Now for the last 15 years I've been a Trucker I don't regret my decision!!!! Love your channel Brother, keep up the great content!!!

This video hits home. I work at an independent shop near Detroit & we are backlogged 2 to 3 weeks right now. I just returned to work after a year & a half, health issues, surgery and a loooong recovery. But finding help in my absence was not very productive. And now the parts debacle. It's crazy. Great video Rustbelt, stay awesome!👍👍

Was in the motor trade for years but gave it up because customers continue to think you’re ripping them off and can’t understand the complexity of modern vehicles and for example a head gasket was an easy job and now it can be a huge exercise.

As long as Stellantis and Daimler Truck north america keep producing vehicles there will always be an overabundance of work for repair shops 👍🏼

I live in a really remote area of Alaska and had some leave from work coming up next month. Was planning on doing the 14 hour drive to the city to get my vehicle serviced, but the service department is booked until late October. It is August 21st. Sucks to be me I guess.

I’m a Ford dealership tech. I’m slowly trying to get certified. But working 12 hours a day, rather hard to come home and take tests. I am officially backed up at least a month and a half with engine work. Majority of my parts have been on back order since March. Ford has already said to expect delays until 2023. Have you heard anything about that on the Chrysler side?

Oh yeah, every car I bring in that needs any form of hard parts about needs something that is on backorder

Rebuilding an older toyota. My machine guy couldn't find parts. But I went online and was able to find them. Do you guys go online and look everywhere or just your established supply chains?

Anywhere that we can get parts fast enough to get the car going down the road. It definitely makes a harder job on the parts department

As an independent shop, I agree completely, we use to stay a week behind normally, as we still did major repairs. Now we are 3-4 weeks behind, and the part back orders are making it more difficult, as we put on the waiting on, parts board, then 3 weeks you get the part, and now have to work it back in or it goes to the back of the schedule. As for warranties, most after market parts are going to Sonsio, and they pay 75% up to $300, so it can turn out being same pay as dealers, on the flip side those willing to pay the hours, usually only want to cover the cost of the tech.

Something we are seeing is new sales is going nuts! PDIs and accessories are being moved up the priority ladder. In addition cars that used to go to wholesale are being repaired and sold internally because the margins are crazy high.

Interesting. Here on the west coast, our dealership has been super slow with not many cars coming in. A lot of parts do end up being on order but there hasn't been many customers as of the past month

I have to agree with everything you said. I’m just a DIY guy with some skills that obviously are no where near a certified tech but I do refer to the shop manuals and I have a way of figuring it out. Lately my friends have actually been asking me to work on their cars cause they can’t get into my garage. I have to decline because I could just never deal with it if something bad happened but all the same, this is where things seem to have gotten.

It’s beyond tough for us right now especially me, as I am Level 3 in everything (and will do it all) and my shops go to guy. I have a 14 Ecodiesel WK that’s getting a complete fuel system due to high pressure pump failure going on almost 2 months I believe waiting on everything to come in. I have a 4xe that is getting the ABS / Booster assembly “current” ETA end of the month and was ordered 2 weeks ago. Then customers get mad at us kill our CSI and FFV that then makes us look terrible for things out of our control. I am lucky I am at a dealer who appreciates me and takes care of me right now that’s for sure.

That’s the unfortunate truth across the board. I feel really bad for techs and service writers who get commission in CSI and good surveys.

It's just not in the Auto industry. In the outdoor power equipment It's just as bad. One OEM we need to prove that its sold before they will ship out the part. And not just stock. We normally do a spring order for parts in the fall. Now thats been canceled by 4 of the 5 OEM'S. Also been keeping knowing good parts and putting them on the shelf. To put on customers equipment. Till there new part comes in just to keep them working. Because waiting 4+ weeks is just stupid.

Because of the "romance" of the auto industry the pay isnt where it needs to be either. You will always have young kids willing to work on cars for little money because its "cool". Name another industry where you have to have the knowledge we have to have, on top of having to buy thousands and thousands of dollars of tools, where you dont own the business.
