Having won the Champions League and displaying the kind of form that suggests they could challenge for the Premier League title in the upcoming season, the feeling around Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea is generally pretty positive right now.
However, the £21million sale of Marc Guehi, one of England’s most highly-rated young defenders and a player many Blues fans hoped would eventually break into the starting eleven, is the latest indication that many of Chelsea’s academy graduates are growing impatient at the lack of first-team opportunities, despite the so-called ‘youth revolution’ which had provided a lot of hope for them during Frank Lampard’s first year in charge.
But why are so many young players leaving Stamford Bridge this summer? And is it necessarily a bad thing for the club? On today’s FD Explained, we’re going to find out.

Yeah at the end of the day we are a top club, if a player can't play top-class football by about 22/23 then they have to go. It's the unfortunate way of an elite club, this goes for players at Barca and Real, it's why so many decent youth Barca and real players ended up at other top clubs. We can't be sentimental about these players that don't make it

But on the other hand, what Frank did, bringing Mason, Reece, Billy, etc still benefits us. Ignoring the obvious fact they are now or will be cemented into Chelsea, academy players now have more faith in the club than they ever have. Example Broja who saw what Mason did and wants to replicate his rise to the first team. We can’t keep them all so might as well get a profit whilst we can.

Chelsea has a fantastic youth set-up, while only having at most 15 regular places on the field. They are not able to use all the players. Loaning players out is really their only option to ensure the talent gets playing time. While as a Chelsea fan, it sucks to see good talent be sold, it is great to have a club that produces talent for the game as a whole.
@joshbrown2217
@joshbrown2217 2 жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting that we have to limit our loaning thanks to the new rules set in place by fifa, so a lot of these players may not of had the option to be loaned as this will only be reserved for exceptional players (the Gilmour's and Gallaghers)

Chelsea have one season where they use academy players as a result of a transfer ban and now everyone is surprised when they've reverted to selling them and bringing in other players. It's exactly what Man City have been doing for the last few years as well. Buy up and develop lots of high potential youngsters, pick out a few choice talents to integrate into the first team (in this case, Mason Mount and Reece James) and sell the rest on at a big profit to fund the big money signings of stars like Werner, Havertz and Lukaku. City did the same, picking out Phil Foden as the pick of the bunch and selling on the likes of Jack Harrison, Angelino, Lukas Nmecha and Douglas Luiz to fund a move for Ruben Dias, Jack Grealish and possibly Kane as well.

I don't think it's a Chelsea issue, it's a "player power" thing. It's modern football. So many players run their contracts down now so they can get better deals or force moves away. Academy players are learning from others like Gnabry and Sancho who weren't getting the play time, made a big move and proved themselves to be World Class. With so many rich mid-table clubs in Prem who can promise a decent wage and playing time, staying at a "big club" isn't necessarily as appealing as it once was.

The reason why everyone is making a big deal out of this & focusing on us 'selling our youth' is because they are really good. You don't hear the media pushing this narrative when the other big clubs lose their youth players because they aren't that good, however, chelsea has over the last 8-10 years produced an amazing batch of young talent & will continue to do so. Everyone can't make it.. if we are to win & compete at the highest level season after season its impossible to promote youth at the level everyone wants the club to! As long as we get one or two of the best every few years like mount, reece, odoi, gilmour, gallagher etc, we will be good 🙏🏿💙

I think it’s important to note it’s not just Chelsea’s fault anymore. Players like Livramento, Guehi, Bate etc are 18-20s and they didnt want to go thru the loaning system like the other graduates did. Livramento as much as i want him to stay i understand why he left. Hes 18 and the guy’s playing in his position rn is Reece James, a 21 yo UCL winner and England international. Even if livramento goes out on loan for two years he’ll still come back to a 23 yo James. Same with Bate, he has Mount and Gilmour ahead of him.

Why Chelsea preferred Warner over Abraham is mind boggling. Abraham led the team in Scoring the previous year and then last year they made Warner their top striker. The guy could not hit the side of a barn. He is one of the worst goal scorers I have ever scene at Chelsea.

I am still bemused why Arsenal can’t get the same level of youth talent as Chelsea even since Wenger day’s, and why no one has done a story on this. Even simply targeting the Chelsea youth players that are currently jumping ship.

Chelsea and Manchester City have a very poor record promoting youth players. Chelsea had De Bruyne, Lukaku, Salah, Lamptey, Tomori and Guehi but success first mentality has forced these young players out of the club. The same applies with City with Sancho and Diaz.

Is this a problem with Chelsea or a problem with top tier clubs in general? You've got to hand it to the Chelsea youth for having the guts to refuse deals and leave the club though. There's a huge amount of uncertainty that comes with refusing deals when they are at such a young age.

Frank Lampard did give youth a chance to fill the spots left free in the squad but they didn't win anything so they needed signings that could take them that extra mile but Lampard was unable to integrate all of them and when he got sacked tuchel came in and he already had a good squad so he didn't need much academy players so chelsea sell them for funds. This is my opinion if you guys disagree or would like to add something just comment.
