Why are Chinese F&B brands flocking to set up shops in Hong Kong?

Many Hong Kong F&B businesses are struggling to stay afloat. Some blame it on lower tourist footfall, while others say, it's due to price conscious consumers heading across the border to Shenzhen, for cheaper offerings. The ones seen bucking that trend are mainland Chinese F&B chains, with more of them are setting up shop in the city. CNA's Jojo Chan finds out, it's all part of a long-term strategy for global expansion. Read more: cna.asia/45QCtrU

@@godzillamothra5983 except it can't, because the moguls are too busy expanding in various cities in China, but keep the rent high in Hong Kong to "keep out the poor" (aka make the poor poorer). they refuse to lower rent even if it means all you see are shutters. we need our China government control, and not Hong Kong's own legislators who have monetary interests in ignoring the public to protect their investments. LEGCO is a self-legal corrupt group of people. the 50 year no change is stupid, we need more proper socialist changes to fix those moguls from exploiting us.

It will probably take a big market crash to reset prices to something reasonable. Hong Kong is still priced as if it was a British colony and the only door into China... it is not either one anymore...

Mainland food is definitely coming. Here in Malaysia, there are even hawker stalls serving Changsha BBQ, Yunnan over bridge noodles, Roujiamo burgers, water cooked dishes, meat pancakes, Uyghur kebabs, Hainanese coconut hotpot and surprisingly, Malay hawkers serving Lanzhou beef noodles. Mind you, these are just hawker stalls, not some fancy restaurants.... in Malaysia. It's incredible that there were none just 5 years ago.

Not just shops. I saw Minivans in hong kong had shenzhen restaurant Ads! So mainland chains setting up shops here can also be considered as marketing expense because once hong kongers become familiarised with these brands, they would choose to go to these restaurant chains when they travel to Guangdong.

I don’t really think it’s taxation, HK had the most generous tax rate alongside countless small business business subsidies(more generous than ones would think according to tax revenue to welfare ratio) I think one of the 2 paths would be either rate hike to kill some of the real-estates but mainland probably wouldn’t like it, had to follow the weak RMB(mostly political, also central bank of China have trouble counting their own data so sudden change in HKD might be more problematic than they think, but side effects might be HK and RMB system not as easy for money laundering into U.S dollar, makes it harder for XJP government to see who is trying to run…it’s not like they can do anything about it, most are doing legal legit business) The other way might be private equity solutions for retail space, offering smarter more high end business just to match the price. But hey, either way it’s real-estate price that gets in the way, all the Chinese saving consumers couldn’t budge in for mainland economy, so Hong Kong is sorta on its own. Its just real-estate are way too high….then maybe cut down on energy bills then maybe HK can be gucci😊 Then of course zoning kicks in so inevitably to change all blamed on Hk government, glory to the CCP(don’t hack me Chinese government sponsored hackers, please and thank you!)

Not sure, maybe because most (75%+) HK restaurants serve crap and have HORRIBLE service attitude, yet shamelessly charge a 10% service fee when there is NO service? Hence Hongkies flock to Shenzhen every weekend to spend their money and realized how much Mainland China has developed and how HK has fallen not falling behind. The only thing that HK still shines its is Financial industry and the usefulness of its passport, and pretty much nothing else and if Beijing one days grow big enough balls to open its capital market, HK can kiss its financial industry good bye to the likes of Shanghai and Shenzhen.

I have been to Hong Kong and China for the last 20 years, I was there last month, I don’t understand why any Chinese business would go to Hong Kong to compete…. It’s a guaranteed win. Compare with China, Hong Kong is rude service and very expensive, why wasting your money when you will be treated better at 1/2 price or more in China. Hong Kong citizens still believe they are British lol… they demanded the freedoms from China that they never had and will never be Chinese to China. While HK F&B may be losing local customers to next door ShenZhen, etc. HK, because of its unique SAR status (for now) is a loophole for China F&B businesses to go international without any risk of restrictions if they were to do it directly from mainland China itself. Therefore letting China to have its cake n eat it... until, or if, the world no longer recognises the separate n unique economic status of HK, n classifies HK as just another China city. At least that's what i understand from this news. And also I'm here for Otelli Edwards. 😂
