Regarding 5:22, the national currency of China is the Yuan. Yuan written in Chinese is 元 which means round. This is because coins were money and coins were typically round in shape.

Informative and thanks. Never really thought much about this. Money is an abstraction. At some point the Mythology of King Midas, which is mentioned in the clip. With the BCE Greeks, Mesopotamias, and other intellectual stuff going on in that part of the World. Plane and the fancier sorts of Geometry, had to hold objects in your mind's eye. An abstract pattern, huh?

A little known reason not mentioned in the video for why coins were minted in a circle is that, for at least all coins minted after 1081, the various kingdoms of the earth tried (and failed) to imitate the most beautiful round coinage known to man: the Byzantine trachy

What is beautiful with a trachy, compared to e.g. a Greek drachma? Byzantine art is ugly from the trend of people becoming Christians. X-tian art is ugly compared to the classical. Byzantine numismatics I'd call "interesting", but not particularly, centered on aesthetics, philosophy and ethics. The Romans made far better coins, before they moved their capital to Byzantium The dark age of Christianity prior to the renaissance must've been hellish!
@ΒασιλικηΚαζαντζη-θ8φ
@ΒασιλικηΚαζαντζη-θ8φ 3 ай бұрын
@@ToreMix7400 The aesthetic changed but compare the Byzantines to Western Europe or what was left and really apparently from trying to copy it must have been tough. Watch for the gold coins of Leo the Wise and Constantine pogonatus. The later had an engraver who tried to approach classic depictions. Also remember the rare Justinian gold with Nike before the emperor holding a wreath. With the exception of Theodoric the west was in shambles. The city of Marseiles was still minting gold coins in the name of say Maurice Tiberius

I have one in AU. Graded by NGC. It is a 5/5 specimen. Well centered and well struck. I wanted one of these Athenian Owls for 40 years. Finally found one that I could not resist acquiring and I pulled the trigger and bought it on the spot at a show in 2023. It is the prize of my collection. Not cheap, but worth every penny. Awesome history that you can hold in your hand. 😊

I’ve noticed that occasionally early 3rd century AD Roman sestertius of Gordian III, Severus Alexander, and several other emperors in that time range can be squarish, or seem to have 2 opposite almost flat edges. Is there any reason for that?

A circle is the most difficult shape to create, and a square coin would tear your pocket, that's why the coins were tried to be round very much.
