Because life is complicated and hard, reality is harsh and unforgiving, and there are many things that we’d like to have answers to that we simply don’t. Religion is about pretending none of this is true because it feels better to imagine that it’s not. That’s literally it.

I grew up non-religious in an Islamic country. After going through a brief depression period at 15 because of the Islamic teachings at school, I became an atheist (without even knowing what it was until a few years later). From 18 to 22, I'd call myself an atheist and "debate" people over their faith, Islam or otherwise. I learned a lot about argumentation and logical fallacies. Then, at 22 I encountered psychedelics (which I don't condone using). I had my first experience with acid after some thorough research on its effects. I went into the experience with a very open mind but very low expectations. After the trip, I couldn't call myself an atheist anymore, as I had witnessed miracles and evidence for the existence of a "higher intelligence" or whatever. I knew something to be true without having empirical evidence for it (no evidence other than my own subjective experience). Faith. I know I'm not a Muslim or Christian, I know I no longer feel comfortable calling myself an atheist, yet I don't know what I actually believe. I'd still debate people over their faith to see how they justify it or whether or not it holds up to scrutiny as I would like mine to do so. (Sorry for the wall of text)

1. Children are spoonfed with religion. What the parents believe is a big influence on what you will believe. 2. You must FEAR God! He can do whatever he wants with you. So people do not dare to look the other way. It is actually very easy to burst the bubble. You just need to ask questions. But when you confront a believer, give a thousand arguments that doubt the existence of God. They still see 'their' religion as the truth. The propensity for religion has the primary "function" of binding a group together as cooperation is our greatest evolved survival attribute. Even our evolved capacity for language is for human interaction and cooperation. God is the idealization of both the tribal leader as well as the group identity. Your experience of at-one-ment is not likely something most people can achieve as most people are too mundane/outwardly orientated but I too have had this profound experience beyond words. Death and resurrection stories are about this experience as Jesus went within himself. The experience is so profound that being reborn is an appropriate metaphor. The oneness experience may be an aspect of the feeling of unity within a tribal group/church. The writers of the Bible recognized the innate need for identifying with a group when they wrote "man can not live by bread alone but also by the word of God." The success of religious leaders depends on there being many willing sheep. Religion and spirituality overlap but aren't the same with spirituality being more of a personal experience.

None of the 30 or more people I was with had rejected it, but I had stuck my neck out, receiving their ridicule as they dutifully failed to hold the minister to account as I had. But I was the only one who had a religious experience of being at one with the universe, which happened, ironically, while the others were in the minister's church doing their numbingly-boring sheepishly-mindless ritual mumbo-jumbo. I am old now, but I still remember that morning. I learned that most people are incurious, happy not to question anything, considering it more important to 'fit in'. I was raised Catholic, and at a young age I developed this innate need to make sense of the world around me. I remember questioning my mother and the priests about certain beliefs and traditions in the faith. I also quickly took notice of the hypocrisy and contradictions among the people who preached the faith. It wasn't until my time in the military when my "faith" was fully shattered by my experiences in the world. I just want to say that while I am not a believer of any god today, I understand the feeling of spirituality and the need to want to be part of a bigger community. However, it is so frustrating to see your species constantly drive itself to conflict because of it's tribalistic nature. And whether it's religion, politics, or land that is being disputed, the results always contradict the goal of all scripture. Spreading and finding inner peace ✌️.

You said an interesting thing at the beginning, which is that all humans seek to understand the meaning of life, the nature of the universe, and so on, and that this is a spiritual quest. The implication is that, in the modern era, this is something far wider and all-encompassing than the limited nature of any specific religion. Those of us who step beyond the confines of a specific religion, and seek the whole picture rather than some arbitrary fragment, are seen by those locked into arbitrary religious cubby-holes as unspiritual, intent on sin, unwilling to come to (their) god, and so on. But it is those locked into the cubby-holes that are specific religions (or worse, the infinity of infinitessimal factions within them) who are the ones who are lacking. Those not locked in are able to take a far wider and understanding view, from which there is no going back. It's like, unless you have seen a day, you can never know how much your sight was limited by the darkness of night. So let's be clear about where true spirituality lies: It is in accepting truth, wherever it takes us. Not in cowering within confines measured and laid out by ancient people who, to be fair, were doing their best, but were limited in access to an understanding of the world. For us, those limits have been torn away. We can see across the entire terrain of all religions, of all accumulated knowledge. It is laid bare for us to examine, to compare, and to come to conclusions that ancient people could never have the mental models to even imagine. And what do the cowering folks do, who want to bolt and lock doors to protect themselves from greater truths that contradict (or are not explained within) their myopic little sacred scrawlings? They fight against those of us who have stepped far beyond them. They have no choice but to do so because of their terrible fear. Tell them that if their god is real then they cannot have anything to fear, but they still don't get it.

Thank you Wyeth - A wonderfully uplifting video- So sad to view so many negative comments from, I would guess, young people feeling really down on life - It seems paradoxical when experiencing various personal problems it can be beneficial to get out of our own little world & consider the bigger picture not just our family lineage, though that can assist, but the lineage & the evolutionary progress of the human species as a whole, as your video alludes to - Additionally it is most helpful,particularly in tough times to see life as comprehensive learning process & see problems & obstacles as opportunities to grow & develop, on the way to each & everyone of us reaching our full potential

Religion is a social.management system. And human beings know very well it is impossible for them to manage anyone without themselves and their loved circles. Yet they know they may be facing many threats if they just live alone or with people whom they feel love for, which is why they clobber together to live inside a society on agreeable terms. Which is also why they often blindly obey religions, it is like blindly trusting someone or something for common safeguard and protection.

I believe we are subject to religion because God put it within our hearts. We have a soul and spirit which are eternal. The fact that we have a moral compass and understand it is not entirely accurate or foundational on our ethics, proves God exists and has a higher standard.

He did not go over the main and actual reason for it. That is that people need a reason for life. Life is too big and mysterious so they need something to tell them what and how to think what to do how to react to things and how to generally guide their life because they cannot fathom it on their own. It was also usually taught to them at a young age and it is all they know.

No. There is no such thing as "spirituality". I am self aware. I have thoughts of how we are actually all star dust. One with the universe. We are all insignificant in the grand scheme of things. And that's ok. I'm enjoying my brief time in the universe. This particular assembly of molecules has invoked an ability to realize it exists. Very cool, but we don't need a fable to explain my self awareness. Belief in "spirituality" necessitates belief in a "spirit", which supposedly exists apart from our physical being. But spirituality is simply an alternate name for conscientiousness. It ends when the body ends. We've never detected a "spirit" apart from a body. And yes, the onus is on those who claim the existence of "spirit". Without evidence, I can summarily reject your assertion as I do the existence of Harry Potter. Some find the idea of a timeless "spirit" comforting and that's fine. But realize you are in the same frame of mind as a five year who believes in a jolly elf that brings them presents. We can find great meaning in our lives without "spirituality." In helping others. In deep study of music or art or science. And in countless other ways. I am in awe of reality. From subatomic particles to gravity waves from a circling pair of black holes, reality is not only amazing, it is literally too much for one human being to understand completely. The concept of spirituality is just an embarrassingly silly idea in comparison to the beauty and the very real complexity of the cosmos. That little thing called our universe, that is all I need to make my life "spiritually" complete.

As a Christian what you said almost made sense up and to the point that all of reality is you. That makes no sense whatsoever. Every single human being is an individual and there is a common spirit within us. The spirit that lives within us is the spirit God that created everything but we are not it, it is in us. And the reason why we can’t be it, why we can’t be God is because we did not create ourselves we did not create the stars in the sky we didn’t think of that and it came to be, you can’t manifest creation only God, the only entity that existed before existence did. That’s why every human being wonders of the spiritual aspect of existence is because literally the human mind cannot fathom the idea of a being that lives outside of its own creation. I was once you debunking Christianity and every other religion saying they’re basically all the same and that it’s just to bring division. But it’s not it’s the answer that everybody’s looking for Jesus is the answer everyone is looking for if you really look into it. With a lens to see the truth and not to conform even to it but to find the truth beyond what you’ve been told
@Austin-rq4cn Жыл бұрын
No matter what you say or what I say, there is no truth. There never will be. We will never know how we were created. Religion is the human way to cope with this realization. You think it is the “answer” because it is the easy path to take. It is comforting to think there is a reason to our existence, and that someone placed us here. But truly, you have no idea whether what you have faith in is true or not, you have faith in your religion because it’s the easy thing to do.

@@Austin-rq4cnI wouldn’t say that we will never know the true nature of things merely because we don’t yet know what we don’t know in regards to the universe, so making such a statement is a bit hasty. I think religion has been around basically for two reasons. 1) People fear the unknown; and 2) Other people figured out really quickly how to prey on those fears. I am not saying it's a dirt nap when we die. Why? Because I don't know. I think the trend of people being able to admit that they don't know by walking away from religion is a very good thing, although it may be too late.......I sense there is more going on than meets the eye. Something both Science and Religion cannot measure in any way shape or form. Religion preys on fear and creates a world full of people who lie to themselves constantly and bring more people in to their belief system so they don't feel so alone in their self deception. I went to church when I was younger. If you question ANYTHING in the religion you are going to church for, you will soon find yourself out of that church.....

The middle way is the only way I'm striving for. Thanks for speaking on this hot lie on humans that dares to join.

if you look at the regions of the brain, for example the rationale section, this section allows us to conceptualise. You would think the fact that we use this section to rationalise also would overwhelm the conceptualisation of god, but no. God seems to win out over rational judgement. I believe it is because 1) our ego needs pacifying is a driver. In pacifying our ego there is 2) a relinquishing, or absolving of an individuals responsibility as a human to some or all uncomfortable truths 3) The acceptance of religious fate is self fulfilling and 4) is also an attractant to others seeking to absolve themselves in order to belong.

I spent 15 years of my life denying religion, believing that I myself was enlightened by denigrating faith and living by pure reason. I spent much of that time feeling that something was missing. As I've reencountered spirituality and come to embrace it I've learned that humans are as much spiritual beings as we are rational beings. Faith and reason are not contradictory but complimentary. In the same way we need to feed the body with sustenance, the mind with knowledge, we need also to feed the soul with wisdom. Spirituality, like science, is a quest for truth. A way of understanding reality. Unfortunately, it can also be misused. Religion can't fully explain the scientific world. And vice versa, science cant fully explain the spiritual. They each, nonetheless, have their respective domains.
