I am Japanese. Buddhism in Japan is different from other Buddhist countries. It has a history of working together with Shintoism. Shinto deities were considered to be another form of Buddha, and Buddhist priests also worshipped at the shrine. Therefore, Buddhists in Japan are also Shintoists.😊 The Japanese view of religion may be difficult for people overseas to understand.😅

Makes me wonder why Japan wanted to separate the two when the Meiji restoration sprung up.

The separation of Shinto and Buddhism during the Meiji era was a government policy. The purpose of this separation was to make Shintoism the sole state religion in order to realize the ideals of the restoration of the monarchy and the unity of ritual and government. This policy was implemented very strictly, but in the end it did not work.

But isn't Shinto also a lot about respecting the 'spirits' of nature and living in harmony with it? As I understand it Myazaki used a lot of inspiration from Shintoism and was pretty skeptical of the capitalist continual growth mindset and careless industrialism.

As a Japanese native, this explanation sounds funny to me.
False caricature. Japan's military leader during the Pacific war, when the empire rose to the height of it's influence, known as "the face of japanese samurai militarism", was actually a lifelong devout buddhist - General Hideki Tojo.
@Srrrgp10 ай бұрын
dude, they are both. complete syncretism. so was general tojo, like everyone else :)

u can be buddhist and shinto
@tatsumisouma4 ай бұрын
Wrong. Tojo Hideki, like most japanese (including myself) was practicing both. We blended the two religion into each other and that's how we practice them

The state is not Shinto. The state is secular. The current right-wing of Japanese party are Nichenrin Buddhist.

You’re right. I said in 1870s it became a state religion.
