Dude! Finally somebody els! I could t find anybody els who could explain what I was seeing! I’m only a year and three months in. I was thinking I had to start my loc journey all over again because of something I did. And yes, I do experience shedding and breakage. I’m still trying to find something to make my hair softer. It tends to always feel dry no matter what I use.

I’m happy my video found you. Yeah, you’d think more people would be talking about it but not so much. And no, you don’t need to start over. You just have to work with what you have. Btw, have you tried Yannie’s suggestion of rose water and vitamin E oil (a half and half mixture) on your locs? I know many people swear by it. One last thing...locs will never be as soft as loose hair because the tangling/matting that occurs creates a rougher texture. That being said, you should be able to find a solution to that feeling of dryness. Congrats on a 1 year and 3 months! Keep pushing forward!

You had me at the very detailed diagram and the use of the word ‘posit.’ 😊 Great video, definitely helpful as a person whose hairs are not really growing into the loc BUT I also was a prodigious shedder as a loose natural lol For me I don’t think it’s thinning though, the base of my locs aren’t changing per se, it’s just the fuzzy roots are definitely brand new / longer baby hairs not previously incorporated into a loc. I think taking my hat/bonnet off sometimes results in those hairs coming out (on the sink like you said) - like they’re young, shirt hairs for me but there’s a bulb...
@AtreyuLocs
@AtreyuLocs 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the shedding as a loose natural makes sense. Just because the hairstyle changes doesn’t mean the behavior of the hair and its accompanying growth cycle changes. So you shed with or without locs. I definitely think the use of my head coverings has given those daily 50-100 shedded hairs time to be caught up by my locs. But even so, a few still inevitably escape. And as for those young hairs with a bulb, it could be that they’re on a shorter hair growth cycle. Can you imagine if every strand had the same programming? We would go bald every time we encountered the end of a hair growth cycle 😂 I definitely appreciate this design more 🙂 Anyway, thanks for watching and sharing your experience with this topic.

I think you are 100% right! This makes so much sense. I’ve been wondering this for the last year of my journey. Thank you! I have a lot of shedded hair with bulbs throughout my locs. If you look at mine in the sun you can see those all throughout. My hair grows outside the loc but I don’t have thinning but that’s because I’m constantly making sure I wrap them to keep my base strong. I’m semi free form

I'm glad my theory resonates with someone else. It definitely makes sense to me considering everything that I've observed. And way to stay on top of that new growth that grows away from your locs. What I do now is braid the new growth into the locs and it holds so much longer than when I use to wrap it around the lock. If you get a chance, check out my video titled, "Braid Technique for Dreadlocks". I haven't done a retwist in 9 months and those former problematic locs are thick and still holding onto that new growth that I braided into those locs. It's amazing! Thanks for watching and for writing me!
@BreeCraine
@BreeCraine 7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with your theory. I thought I was the only one who could really see this happening, but I always had a hard time putting it into words. Great video, btw! For me it happens most in the female/male pattern baldness area because that's the area on my head where the hairs have a shortened life cycle due to the androgenic alopecia. And I get shed hairs too even though my texture is super kinky curly. So for me, hair pattern or texture is not a factor in how much my hair grows away from locs or sheds.

I'm SO SO happy to hear that I'm not alone in this. Thank you so much for your description and pictures. I think I need to start retwisting more often but the hard part is that I only have this issue in one area where my scalp was previously damaged. It seems like this area of scalp is getting healthier in this area due to having locs now and so I now have a flurry of new growth but it's not growing into the locs.
@AtreyuLocs

I'm glad the video was helpful. I don't know if you've seen my Braid Technique for Dreadlocks video but that's what I do for my 4-5 problematic locs. You should braid the new growth into the loc. It actually keeps those loose hairs into the loc for quite a while. I don't have to do it often and so that might be the course of action for you. Then you won't have to worry about undoing all of your hard work of allowing the scalp to get healthier through less maintenance.

My goal is to educate people through my experience with it. Good luck with not retwisting and washing for a bit. I should mention that I don't use products in my hair except for the occasional vitamin e oil/rose water mix spray. I also only retwist with distilled water. This allows me to not wash for a while. @AtreyuLocs
@AtreyuLocs 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've definitely noticed people with looser curl patterns having hair that grows away from their locs. The weird thing is that I've also seen people in the 4a-4c range also have hair that grows away from their locs. So there must be something else also factoring into whether or not your hair grows away from your locs. I think you've definitely figured out a piece of the puzzle though.

All of the RELIGION OF LOCS, is akin to saying ; (1) not EVERYONE who smokes cigarettes will develop lung cancer or heart disease (2) not EVERYONE who has diabetes will have an amputation or develop kidney failure or go blind (3) not EVERYONE who uses heroin or meth will overdose (5) not EVERYONE who drives at 100 mph will have a deadly car crash So what the hell, if I lose ANY of my hair follicles, so what A HAIRSTYLE is WORTH THE RISK OF BALDNESS. You are 100% right and I understood and thing you were saying. The diagram was dead on. I'm a little annoy with my locs right now. I've notice back in October that I shed a lot of hair. Everything you described is what I'm going through. I sit at my desk at work and I constantly see little hairs everywhere. I do have few locs thinner as it goes up to the scalp. One in particular is really thin. I will be showing this in my next vid. What did you do about this? Please tell me. I follow Yannie the Locologist and in one of her vids she states thinning could be stress related, an iron deficiency or something else. I've recently noticed in my loc journey that maybe I shouldn't go more that 2 months without a retwist. Because I think thats whem my hair starts to break off. I want to go months with out a retwist but I don't think that's a good idea any longer. I'm 16 months into my journey and I'm learning a lot about my hair. Thanks for the vid.
@AtreyuLocs
@AtreyuLocs 4 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you understood what I was talking about. I tried my best to explain it. To answer your question, I didn’t do anything to “fix” the problem. I don’t know that you can control natural shedding. I do keep my hair in a satin bonnet/tam most of the time which probably helps the shedded hairs attach to the locs versus just falling to the floor. And you’ll definitely figure out the best frequency with which to do maintenance. I’ve learned that if your hair grows away from your locs, then you should probably do maintenance more often than if the hair grows into your locs. That being said, my hair grows away from my locs and I’ve gone an entire year without maintenance because I use the braid technique. But yeah, you’ll figure out what works the best for your situation. Congrats on 16 months!! The best thing you can do is continue to pay attention to your hair and learn exactly what it needs to thrive. Thanks for watching and writing me!

@AtreyuLocs
@AtreyuLocs 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's because the locs are thinner. I have really thin locs that don't have that problem. The hair line might be a factor somehow because my problematic locs are mostly near my hair line but I'm not sure how just yet. The texture of the hair in that area might have a bearing on it too. As for my 4-5 problematic locs, I just make sure that I continue to braid, crochet, wrap, etc. that new growth into the loc to keep them strong. It's a small price to pay in order to have locs in my opinion :) And thank you!! I had fun making that intro. And yes, the hair is definitely growing!

Very interesting hypothesis. I agree that there may be a correlation regarding hair cycles, but there's still that question: how does one with a hair cycle that allows hair to grow away from locs keep their hair from thinning? I guess the reality is simply accept that the hair will eventually grow away from it if it's meant to

Thank you. Yeah, I hope you don't end up having to cut them. Some people have had success getting their roots thicker by taking certain supplements including Biotin. However, Biotin has been said to only work if you already have a deficiency of it in your body. Other individuals have had success getting thicker roots by reducing the maintenance, however, if your hair grows away from your locs, that can be problematic as well. I really hope you don't have to cut them. It sounds like we have had our locs around the same length of time. Just continue paying attention to them and trying to figure out what they need thrive. Yeah, it sounds like you shed a lot more hair than me. Definitely try to watch those stress levels and do things that keep you chill and happy. The shedding that I have is nowhere near that intense. I think because I keep my locs in a tam/bonnet combo, the shedded hairs that would normally fall in a given day (50-100 strands on average) are trapped inside my cap until I take my locs out and so then they finally hit the countertop.

I'm sorry to hear about the state of your locs right now. Thankfully, the locs that were thinning closest to my scalp, aren't thinning anymore. Once I figured out that my hair grows away from my locs and that I need to reincorporate the new growth back into the loc, I was gravy. I just started braiding the new growth into the loc and it has worked wonders. Any yeah, you gotta be careful with the bleach when dyeing your locs. That's why I haven't given into the temptation to bleach my tips. It looks so sweet but I keep thinking about the potential damage it could do. The highlights near the end of MY locs came from when I bleached and dyed my hair before I got locs. So I don't have to worry about my locs unraveling or looking bushy, thankfully. Maybe as your set of locs gets longer, you can gradually cut off the damaged part of your locs until you have a completely healthy set, from root to tip! Just a thought. In the meantime, stick with it and stay locked!!

If you are shedding from the locs your locs are probably to dry and brittle. If the tips are shedding it due to dye still being inside them - You never can wash out all the dye inside of locs if you have very kinky hair.

So eventually will it grow with the loc?

Depends on your hair. Check out my Braid Technique For Locs video as well as the updates. Once I braided the hair into the loc, I was pretty much all set.

Thank goodness for this video! It makes perfect sense! I recently decided to give my locs a break and I didn’t twist for 12 weeks, when I did finally retwist, my roots were suddenly extremely thin! I’m completely freaked out! Since you’ve been through this, will the part that isn’t locked yet mature into thin mature locs or will it thicken up as it goes through the locking process? I’m clearly going to have to start twisting again every 4 to 6 weeks again and never go this long again? Did your locs easily recover or did it take a while? Advice! I need advice! Help 🙏🏾

How the loc will turn out depends on how you proceed once the maintenance resumes. For instance, if you braid the new growth into the loc, then it should be fine. Watch my "Braid Technique for Dreadlocks" video and you'll see what I mean. Basically, when you braid that hair into the loc, you've put the hair back where it should have been all along and the locs grow out like normal. Earlier in my journey, I would wrap the new growth around the loc, which worked decently well but, sometimes, it would unravel and therefore not completely fill in the space of the loc that was thinner. When that happened (this was when I was first discovering that my new growth grows away from my locs) I had to use my beard hair to fill in those thin parts of the loc because I had missed the opportunity to fill in the space with the new growth. I repaired 4 or 5 locs with my beard hair. But now that I braid the new growth into the loc, it's more secure and so my locs retain the thickness that they've always had. It's hard to explain in the comment section. Just watch the videos in my Loc Repair playlist. I go into detail. I think you'll be fine, so don't panic. And just so you know, I retwist every 2 months now with no issues. I might also make a video on this topic. I hope this helps!

Now take that drawing of the hairs that grow away from the loc, and have those loose hairs (which are more straight or wavy) reach out, lasso, and then bury themselves in some of those other locs, and you have illustrated my major loc struggle! I don’t have much of a shedding issue, I started off with 2ST, and maintain with palm rolling; but in retrospect, I’m wondering if for those of us that have this issue, perhaps interlocking would’ve been the better way to go.

Wow, this message was in my spam folder. Sorry for the late reply. Hahaha...you are too funny, especially with the lasso part LOL! Yeah, I know the struggle is absolutely real for you. You'll get it in order though. To be honest, I can't ever see myself interlocking. I want to be the one maintaining my hair and I don't trust myself to not make a mistake while interlocking. So I'll just continue to trod this harder path, which is ever so rewarding :)

Wanda Reid Wedemeyer While I'm envious lol, I'm very happy that you don't have to worry about hairs that grow away from the loc. I hope your hair continues to grow into the loc throughout the rest of your journey 🙂 Thanks for writing me!

I disagree. It did it with my thick locs too. It's because of how my hair grows. That being said, it's no longer a problem.
