True, I also suspected that reformulations happen within a year of the initial release. Performance is very important to a good first impression, otherwise sales will be low and the product will be a failure. Companies can probably get away with violations for a year or so, then they have to get in compliance.

I think there have been a lot of regulatory changes recently so that might be why so many fragrances feel like they have changed quickly after release. 🥰

The big industry-wide reformulation came between 2020 and 2023, due to the 2022 ban of butylphenyl methylpropional. The companies knew that this ban would come so they started reformulations early. My YSL Y EDP is strong, but manufactured in 2021. From what I hear, the 2022-present version of Y EDP has trash performance. The entire L'Homme line of YSL has been decimated.

The worst thing is that they hide it and deny it. That’s wrong. And consumers pay the same or more for a inferior quality fragrance. If they want to reformulate, they should put a notice on the box so consumers will know what’s going on
@dr.claire.perfume

Yes the denial is the problem. Miss Dior has shown that blatant reformulation causes initial backlash but it calms down as more people discover the new fragrance. Brands that do it secretly and deny it become untrustworthy, e.g. Kilian.

Thanks for a very interesting and in-depth video! I think the overlap is extremely small, maybe non-existent, between people with fragrance allergies and people who actively buy perfume and notice reformulations -- so when companies use "allergies" as the reasoning behind a reformulation I think it is just an excuse to increase their profit margins. Reformulations aren't inherently bad but I wish brands would make note of them more clearly, even if they don't explain why the reformulation occurred. The secrecy makes it feel negative from the outset even if the reformulation is good. They could normalize it by simply writing the year on the bottle or box; I know it's possible to check serial numbers, but just communicating it very clearly with the consumer would go a long way. Then the person could be more informed when buying and not take it home and be disappointed. It's sad to lose something familiar, but being deceived is worse and makes people a bit angry. If a company is going to reformulate, they could at least take away the deceptive bait and switch aspect.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that reformulation could be better and more openly communicated. I've noticed that Dior has formulation numbers on their boxes which mean it is easier to tell what you are getting but you have to know what you are looking for because it's separate to the lot number. You're spot on that the secrecy is the biggest issue because being disappointed with a purchase is not a good feeling. I've also noticed that some companies give out old formulation samples but only have new formulation bottles which should not be allowed! Thank you so much for your thought provoking comment! ❤️

Hypnotic Poison EDT by Dior had amaaazing performance and longevity years ago, now it is but a shadow of its former self (or maybe its just lives up to a regular EDT version now) Still smells aboslutely wonderful, though 😊 I wish Dior would bring back a "safe" version of Midnight Poison. It is drop dead gorgeous and unique, and even with some reformulation, I would definately buy it if they stay true to its essence.

Claire, another outstanding video chock full of helpful information. I do wish companies would at least date their reformulations in the title or something - Angel 2014, etc. so consumers would know. That would help people make informed decisions. I totally get all the possible reasons for reformulation - it's all part of doing business in our modern world.

Yes me too. I've noticed that Dior do have formulation numbers on the bottoms of their perfume boxes. 1993 reformulation of Arpege by Lanvin is widely considered as a close and respectful take of the original. YSL Opium on the other hand is an entirely different creature now. As a child I remembered it as a lush, woody floral fragrance, but now it is a thin, powdery shadow of itself. I still love it (an Opium is better than no Opium at all) but it's not the same thing I remembered years ago. Most perfume houses/brands handled formulations well imo, with the exception of Dior. They did it so frequently it seems it's hard to keep up with it, and I think that's the reason why people hates reformation. J'adore I smell today is nothing like the ones I smelt only 1-2 years ago. It's insane 😅
@dr.claire.perfume

It's interesting you say that! Because I tried Opium last year and it was not at all how I remembered the smell from childhood. I hadn't tried it for many many years and I just thought I'd grown up and that's why I felt it was more mellow, but maybe that was an actual difference? Dior are notorious aren't they? I have a bottle of J'adore from 2013/4 I think! I should go to try the current one 😊 thanks for watching 🥰

I have two 100ml bottles of Dior Homme 2020 that were produced in '22 and a 150ml bottle that was produced in '23 and there's definitely a difference between them. I don't know if there was a reformulation or if it's just a difference in the natural materials between batches, but I'm glad i bought that second '22 batch bottle as i was quite disappointed that the big bottle smelled so different from the very first spray. It's almost as if you smell all the top and middle notes at once instead of progressing through them over an hour or so, making the big bottle's scent seem heavier.

@dr.claire.perfume Absolutely! It's such a shame when we find our "signature scent" and it then gets changed. Very interesting video again! The reformulation that hurt me most was Pure Poison somewhere around 2008 or so. It was my signature scent for years and all of a sudden when I opened a new bottle, it was so bland. It was like I lost my identity and it took me years to find a new signature scent. Not that having a signature scent is important, but I just felt lost without it 😅 A La Nuit by Serge Lutens became my new love and I’m happy I got several back-up bottles before they went to the bell bottle collection. Btw, I did get a rash once from Pure Poison, but that could also just be from the alcohol and always spraying the same spot.

Pure poison used to be way more orange blossom forward and now it's more jasmine forward. The reformulation was quite a change and the older bottles are sought after. I've not tried A la Nuit but I think someone was talking about it last week in my comments, it's orange blossom and cumin I think 🤔 I need to try more Serge Lutens. 🥰

@ I think you’re referring to Fleurs d’Oranger, which is the orange blossom one. It’s been a while since I smelled it, but I do remember it had some urine dirtiness to my noise, so that might be the cumin. A La Nuit is a jasmine fragrance: fresh, somewhat green, big and just amazing 🥰

Oh it more than annoyed me, lol! I’ve just now come across this video, but it was so informative! Thank you. It’s really hard wading through conjecture and opinions. I think my main issue is all the ambiguity; not really admitting a fragrance has been reformulated but yet it’s still packaged and presented as the OG. Like my beloved Armani Code (in the lace bottle) it’s now but a shell of itself. Same with Rush.. I couldn’t believe how stripped down and generic the new one was.. and it made me question my sanity! I found myself down a rabbit hole trying to figure it out. I understand times change and maybe some of these rules implemented are in fact in our best interest BUT I don’t agree with the clandestine way a lot of these companies operate. As if someone who’s worn their favorite fragrance for 10+ yrs or more wouldn’t know the entire structure of that fragrance is suddenly different 😢!

This is an old one! I should probably make a new version 😂 Same! It's the lack of transparency isn't it? Just say... If they explained that X had been banned so reformulation was a requirement for sale then people would understand. Reformulating just got increased margins is really distasteful though, just put the price up. I agree, the consumer is not dumb, they notice when things change. Thanks for watching 🥰

Really thought provoking video subject Claire, I must say I find it quite frustrating when they reformulate without telling us, it's not so bad if they are transparent about it. I really admire people like Aaron Terence Hughes who refuses to re-formulate his perfumes, he would rather discontinue them than re-formulate. 🙌🙌🙌 I do get that some of the larger houses may have valid reasons.

ATH is a very passionate and principled person, who cares greatly about his brand so I can totally see that would be his ethos. What a great way to be! I do think sometimes most people would rather have a reformulation than a discontinuation. 👍

I have two bottles of Lust by Lush. The older bottle has Jasmine Absolute as its primary ingredient, and the newer bottle lists Ylang Ylang as its primary ingredient. So there has clearly been a reformulation! But it would take a much better nose than mine to tell them apart. So in this case it doesn't seem to matter. Chanel 19, however. I consider Chanel 19 to be the greatest fragrance ever created. Unfortunately the vintage bottles are showing their age. The parfum, the EDT, the EDP, the cologne... each Chanel 19 bottle smells different, for so many reasons other than just concentration. And regulations being what they are, I fear we've lost this one. 😥

Yes! I can remember people saying how Lust has been reformulated. I didn't know quite how though, so that's really interesting. I wonder whether there was a cost concern? Chanel 19 suffered massively because of changes in galbanum sourcing, I'm sure there have been later issues too. I really like 19 poudré but I can't say I love the 19 EDP that's in stores right now. I know the older formulations are loved though. Thanks for watching 🥰

Hi Claire, thank you for the effort you put in providing such great content. Reformulation does not necessarily mean negative, I for example could not do Alien until 2020, and then suddenly a full size bottle is standing tall on my vanity. I think people get very cross about reformulations. It can be a good thing for sure and yes life does move on, change is part of that... Things don't last forever or stay the same. Perfume is about trends. Imagine if we had all the fragrances from the 1940s on the market now and no others, how many people would still be interested in fragrance?

I think that's a big part of it for sure, but I also think there's a drive for cheaper fragrance in some instances. I think reformulation for the sake of relaunch is a very rare event. Most fragrances are simply discontinued. I guess miss Dior is such an iconic line that it survives and is reformulated.

Great topic! I could list hundreds of beautiful perfumes that are now ruined beyond repair. Red Door, Fahrenheit, Ombre Rose, Sung and so many more. These are not little tweaks. They are completely different perfumes and no longer wearable (at least not by me). Also people have allergic reactions all the time. Hello again! Thank you so much! I think IFRA seems to really be very cautious with what it regulates against. Any hint of anything and it becomes a limited ingredient. On the plus side, sometimes they realise that something is actually safer than they thought and they increase the amounts that are allowed! That shocked me! 😂 Must be annoying if you are a company making fragrances. 😂

i hear a lot about reformulations, but good thing I haven't really been into perfumes that long to have any of my faves being possible reformulated. but, with fragrances that Mom used to wear, like Dune.. i have a feeling that one was reformulated. because I remembered it to be richer... could be though that my mom owned the edp or my nose just forgot the scent... same with Obsession (Calvin Klein).. but other fragrances like Estee Lauder Knowing, it still smells the same, so i think it's still the OG formulation even though it has for example oak moss and a million other notes. or it could be that they just successfully swapped some notes without affecting the scent as much.. when it comes though to fragrances that I hope i can try with the OG formulations, it would be Casmir Chopard (heard it is sweeter and more gourmand-leaning) and Shalimar. I don't like the new Shalimar edp (YET), but I still want to smell the OG...😁 You mentioned something about the color of the fragrance. what came to my mind was Notee Vanille from Micallef. i remember seeing bottles of that on YT years ago and the juice color was brown-ish, like Wicked Good.. but the more recent ones are clear in color.. and that is one of their most popular fragrances, and there were even rumors that it was discontinued. maybe they reformulated it to maybe catch up with demand and maybe save some costs too. I dunno. or maybe it the oils just need to mature and macerate. Angel has that same issue too right? i keep hearing about the "greenish" liquid being from the early 2000s and the darker one being older or something... p.s.those figures for perfume sale though. WOW. WOW. just WOW.

Yes I was totally shocked by the amount! Astounding! One I've noticed is rive gauche, it's been my mum's signature for 30+ years so I've been smelling it all my life and the most recent can smells very different to me. Another one is my vintage bottle of Romance. The old one has much more oakmoss. I agree with Angel, the older bottles have more honey and are deep earthy patchouli. The colour is green for my 2011 bottle, but brown for my earlier bottle. Dune is an old one that would not surprise me in the slightest was reformulated. I think reformulation for cost saving is definitely a thing unfortunately. Thanks for watching Paola ❤️

Loving how concise and informative this is. I thought reformulations were solely down to ingredient sourcing or ingredient alterations (natural to synthetic). If the original fragrance won't survive a change of ownership, why not just discontinue it and launch a new, "more relevant" one to fit the new direction? Are brands really banking on consumer loyalty and/or apathy about getting their money back? As for allergens, I know of at least 3 people who can't wear certain perfumes lest they suffer an instant rash or even hives. Ever since I learned that lavender triggers my asthma, I avoid the "note", whether natural or synthetic. Such a shame because I find the scent to be heavenly.
@dr.claire.perfume
@dr.claire.perfume 2 жыл бұрын
I think money is a big part of why they reformulate after ownership changes. They rely on the established product names unfortunately. I guess launching something new is a risk and costs a lot so they stick to changing what is there to make it cheaper. Interesting that you know so many people with fragrance allergies, I never realised that it was such a common problem until I made this video 🙂 it must be very annoying and must stop people wanting to try anything new. 😟

The Miss Dior reformulations are the most frustrating ones. They aren't a tweak because of a lack or change in an ingredient. They are completely different scents. Just rename the damn scent. Give the new scent it's own name and far less people will be angry. If the old Miss Dior is no longer profitable, just retire it. I wouldn't even be mad if they were flankers with slightly different names like they did with Absolutely Blooming and Roses and Roses. Their current practice is dishosnest and is turning me off the brand.

Well, i have dior homme intense, the og version and reformulation of it... its worse than the og. My solition is: i bought 3 dupes each about 25euros so now i have more versions including one very very close to the original. Everybody should buy dupes if the company is changing for profits. Some dupes are even better and longer lasting than the og. So do not buy reformulations. If you can only have a "new version" of your fragrance so why not buy that dupe of it? Its somtimes very close to identical and if not, you pay very less than the also-not-original if its a dupe. Btw, they released a original version from their "dior homme" as a limited edition... that says: we could do the og but its more profiting not to. Buy our cheap stuff😮😢. Its sad

Dior Homme was a masterpiece! Not so much now 😂 I think it's the finding a good one when it comes to clones isn't it? There are some better and some worse, it can take a while to work through them. I agree though, this is where clone brands come into their own, if you can't buy what you want in the designer world, it's worth searching elsewhere 👍 thanks for watching 🥰

@dr.claire.perfume well, here in germany they released a limited edition of the original dior homme only at douglas Shops. That means they can do the og version legaly... also says that they are doing the new formula because its cheaper for them. If you want a quick solution, try: elegant homme by riiffs; Maison Asrar Wood Intense; and camaro homme intense by Pandora scents which is very close, at least about a 25% of the original price, what is a total compensation of that minor diffrence. I love all of the 3.

I have a post-Loreal acquisition bottle of Womanity and was utterly relieved that it was still as I'd remembered. I don't mind at all when my faves are reformulated so seamlessly that I don't notice but when it's so obvious that it's jarring, you can't help but feel like you've been had. I try to remember though that this just means finding other new and exciting perfumes :) ps. I'm someone that often reacts to perfume, though thankfully not severely... yet. (The things we do for the love of fragrance). So cheers IFRA!

Reacting to perfumes must be very scary. Do you try them very gingerly in specific regions with small amounts first? I would be very cautious I think! Yes seamless reformulation must be quite a thing, we just don't hear about the positives I guess. I agree, there are so many perfumes out there to try and I always want to try something new and exciting too! Thank you so much for your interesting comment about perfume allergy. ❤️

@@dr.claire.perfume I mostly wear perfume on my clothes but when it strays (say onto my décolletage, there will be redness or even raised red bumps so I usually try to adhere to clothing boundary lines lol). all my skincare/body and laundry products are fragrance-free for the same reason but it's worked out brilliantly as it allows the perfume to shine :)

@@lilidonna yes fragrance free body products are definitely the way to go to give perfume the starring role. I think sometimes perfume lasts very much longer on clothing. You must have to be wary of the oil and colourants in it.

Excellent 👏👏 youve said it all... This might be the best video i watched on ur channel so far, yes miss Dior smells much more modern now but not as sophisticated as it used to be, i had no idea Because its You got reformulated?? 😢 i love that perfume, i might end up keeping the bottle i have.. Ive heard that IRFA (or ifra) is more about the money now than about caring about ppls health but cant know if its true, it might be.. some ingredients got banned for solid reasons i understand that n some went up in price like crazy but i still believe that perfume brands want as much profit as they can get more than anytime before, thenumerous flankers releases r one of the biggest proofs of that, flankers r just getting out of control to a point its hard to keep up, i like the variety n creativity in that but not when its too much.. The reformulation of YSL Lhomme, La Nuit de Lhomme, Joop Homme, Davidoff Cool Water r the most cruel they ever done imo, especially Davidoff cool water, its just not the same anymore, i deeply regrett selling an old batch i had... love the content n being here, keep it up 🌹🌸

Apparently it has, I bought a bigger bottle of because it's you secondhand a while back so I'm ok 😂 I did film another bit where I said reasons ifra might not be independent since they represent makers of synthetic perfume notes but I cut that out in the end. I do think their regulations might not only be based on allergy. I know a lot of people were very upset about Dior homme, that one is loved. Thank you so much for watching and your lovely comment 🥰
