You can tell that HR personnel like Lionel are there to protect the company rather than the employee. If you are good but your company does not have the ability to leverage on your ability, or if your company doesn't recognise your value while others are willing to, JUST LEAVE. If they can't recognise or realise the value you bring to the table enough to pay you well, they don't deserve the chance to adjust your wage. It is only in Asia that it is normal for people to be paid based on their last drawn. Larger global companies are far more willing to actually pay you your market value.

By keeping salaries secret in Singapore it can lead to more pay discrimination to different races, cronies, genders, religions etc and increase income disparity among the people which is NOT fair.

Local companies only. Good companies have a salary band so you know you are within +-3 to 5 % of your peers.

Education system trains people to have an employee mindset. And being an employee you are dispensable just a matter of time, nobody will care about you when you get older. If someone can tell you when to work , what to wear and how to behave, you belong to an employee mindset and will be very difficult for you to be financially , emotionally & time free .

Humans will always feel they are better than their peers, they should be paid more, there can be no end to it. Even if u say everyone at same level same pay, there be people who feel they contribute more, hence paid more, but their peers may not agree. There is no end to this, so most impt is whether you are satisfied with your pay, move on if u feel you are undervalued. But if you are ok with pay, then don’t compare because everyone is unique and has their own unique set of past work experiences and skills even in a same role.

Usually your pay will reflect your capabilities. If you are capable, your boss will pay you more without you asking. They will not want to lose you and their buisness to a competitor.
