Why Are School Bus Seatbelts Different Colors?

There were no seat belts when I last ride a School Bus back in 1973. And the metal bar that wrapped around the back of the seat ahead of you wasn’t padded, either. The substitute bus driver missed a turn and slammed on the brakes. All of us went flying forward into that metal bar. This happened over a half century ago and I still remember the driver saying “Oops, Kids…Sorry. I missed my turn.” All of us kids on that bus were in some kind of pain.

Yeah I’ve thought about that too. I live in a state that doesn’t require belts on busses, and don’t get me wrong I understand completely that school busses are designed for safety and packaging and whatever. I trust them, but I still don’t understand how that’s safe when I was younger and the driver hit the brakes hard you slam into a seat, even still padded it hurt.

My current day school bus has no seatbelts. One kid in the back jumped as the bus hit a bump, and one of the rivets in the ceiling ripped out some of his hair

I never had seatbelts on any school buses I was in, I graduated college in 2021, so I’m guessing safety wasn’t a priority when I was in school.

School buses don't need them. Collisions are normally with smaller cars, and if there is a fire and your seatbelt gets stuck, your just sitting there waiting for the bus driver with a seatbelt cutter to set you free

In the early 2000s we had em on most of the buses but we didn't wear them. Mostly because it wasn't mandatory to do so. The only thing that our drivers cared about was staying in our seats out of the aisle and behind the line on the floor and of course don't mess with the emergency exits.

NJ state law requires ALL students, whether in high school or elementary are obliged to wear seatbelts at all times (Fed law 1992(. Many drivers in my district only enforces this rule for pre k to grade 2 students. Otherwise, students are required to sit at all times or will get a referral to school principal!

I always used the seatbelts when I used to ride a school bus. Many of my fellow passengers didn’t use the seatbelts however.

When i was in school we had sear belts but the bus drive said “no touch seat belt” cuz he didnt want to have to spend extra time fixing it at the end of his route

My home-state of Ohio doesn’t require seatbelts on school buses. Some buses in my district do have seatbelts but they’re made for little kids. So mostly school buses don’t have seatbelts here.

In Texas or at least in my former school district cause I would say county but the city within the county I'm 8n has its own school district. The seats didn't have belts. Only the special busses did. And for some of the newer busses the first few seats had booster seats built into them. Those had seat belts

Small collins and Thomas buses do have seats belts. But blue birds and ic ce does not. I will not be surprised if Pennsylvania made a law that requires them.

The last time i rode a school bus was back in 2016 and there where no seat belts. The only one bus i remember was maybe 2004-2006 when the bus driver had her son with her in a car seat and thats the only time i remember there ever being one.

I don't remember if there were seat belts when I went to school I'm 27 so it's been awhile but if I remember correctly I think the first few seats in the front of the bus had some for like the little kids and the special ed kids that will ride the Big bus instead of the short bus other than that I'm drawing a blank if they had more seat belts and they were gray not colored
