it's a tenth of the price of so many other gravel bikes, yet those other gravel bikes aren't ten times better than this. I think that's why people are up in arms.

They feel especially overpriced. You can get decent MTB or road bikes at budget prices but gravel bikes just seem to cost more for no discernible reason.

Yeah, people pay a lot for a brand name. This was how I managed a gravel bike from 2021 worth about $1800 (including several upgrades done by the previous owner) for $422. It was made by a small company called State, but even they up-charged quite a bit compared to this bike from what I’ve seen

I got my ALR checkpoint off Facebook marketplace for 1400, it is definitely 10 times better than this bike. This would have ZERO chance on the trails I ride. I also swap out the wheel set and ride with FAST (A21+) groups and will hit 25 on the flats and 40+ on descents, again zero chance with this bike. But this is a good bike for starting out and may get one for my kid.
@chickensendies
@chickensendies 7 ай бұрын
@bindingcurve This bike imo is not in that same caliber or category of bike. Right now at $250 this bike is fine for what it is. Of course you'll be getting "dropped" or be having issues in group rides with more seasoned riders. This is more for a person who is just looking to get into grave biking at a great entry price or for the person who wants a nice overall bike for under $300. The 1/10th the price is a bit of a stretch but in all fairness most gravel bikes are pricey 😅😅😅

For anyone wondering about this bike, I bought one today and rode it 11 miles in just under an hour to get the feel for it. I absolutely enjoyed it. I have a Poseidon Norton (hardtail) and a Giant Trance Advanced (carbon full sus, got this one used.) so I don’t know squat about gravel bikes. For $250, it is absolutely worth it. I was pleasantly surprised. Much like Chicken Sendies, I swapped out the pedals before, tightened everything up, and headed out. I’m ordering a saddle ASAP 😂. Even with padded shorts, my butt was getting sore. I’m 5’9”, got the medium. Feels good.

The color is called Green Tea, it's written on the walmart info card now. I recommend checking the wheel ball bearings, mine were adjusted super tight and with very little grease inside so I rebuilt both axles properly and now the wheels rotate super buttery smooth.

I had to do some digging to find the olive on the website HAHAHAHA I hate hearing that over the wheel. Mince were thankfully ok. I have just recently done a upgrade fork video and was impressed with how the headset bearing were greased! Thanks for commenting!

Bearings being adjusted terribly is extremely common with cheaper hubs. Real shame too, cause the hubs would be fine and last ages if they were adjusted right from the factory. Instead, they get pitted and balls crumble within a year of riding way too often.

I hope whoever at Walmart dreamed up this model and came up with the decent frame design and component spec got a nice bonus. Not only because the bike seems to be a runaway best seller but because it's changing Walmart's image among bike enthusiasts. Two of the Walmart heirs are known bike fanatics, so maybe it's their baby. Anyway, the bike's designer did a great job.

Picked one of these up while not even looking for a bike at the same time. I mainly mountain bike. But got tired of trying to have fun on the mountain bike while in town riding with my sons. I jumped on KZbin and started seeing the craze behind this bike. I went on a whim to my local Walmart and before my eyes they had a few in stock. It’s been so nice on the few rides I’ve been out so far. Again I had no intentions on purchasing a second bike at all. But all these raves and reviews sparked my interest and for the price, I’m pretty stoked. Thanks for this video and your honesty. I will also look into some upgrades as well as a new saddle. Thanks!🤙

Bought this bike couple of weeks ago to fit between my old road bike and mountian bike(26"). Compared to this bike the mountain bike feels like I'm dragging an anchor and they are about the same weight? Saddle is definitely the worse I've sat on. Bought the charge seat and it is pretty good. Note: The charge will not fit on the stock seat clamp. I swapped my road bike post and clamp and all is well. The other point is the mountain bike has not attachment points other than a water bottle. The OT has enough for just about everything. The pedals worked fine but when I felt the bearings they were trash so new ones installed. The bike was put together pretty good. Just an adjustment to the front axle bearings and head. I could only get a medium size, like you said they are slim pickings. It was put together pretty well but all fittings should be checked before you put to many miles on it. I don't think this is a bike to put a bunch of $$upgrades on. If something breaks then it's probably the right time. I do like this bike alot. Because I'm short, fat, old and outta shape I needed to change the stem. I put on an adjustable one because I didn't know how much I needed to raise the bars. Big +. Also treated myself to a new pair of flat MTB shoes. Another big+. Thanks for your vids on this bike. I'll be watching for your upgrades. Sub'd....

It's a great value! When I was looking for a gravel bike, the cheapest models from the reputable brands were 700-800$, while you could buy a decent mountain bike from the same brands for like 600$. I was thinking about buying a frame and building bike myself, but the frame itself would cost more than this bike. There really were no budged options for gravel bikes before. This bike is great. But I agree that freewheel is its biggest drawback. It will probably work fine. But if you will want to upgrade a drivetrain you will need to replace a hub, which means reassembling the wheel. It would probably be easier to just buy a used wheel. And just replacing freewheel cassette is pretty much impossible too. If you have ever tried this - you know what I'm talking about.
@littlegoobie
@littlegoobie 6 ай бұрын
They still make 7sp freewheels. The problem with ALL freewheel hubs though is the inboard bearing design on the drive side which means tons of snapped axles because these are quickrelease wheels. If they were solid axle freewheel, they would be bent axles. Although you can find 7s cassette (freehub) wheels, that would mean changing out this wheel for a freehub wheel and cassette which would make this bike maybe closer to $350 unless it's a garbage wheel.

I had a Bikes Direct bike that I swear was the same frame and fork, I assume its a catalog frame so probably was the same. I was totally happy with it for thousands of miles even though I spent $350-375 on it. I think some people see "Walmart" and just assume its the average 50lbs cruise around town tank things they normally sell and many just like bashing things/being "tough" online. I do also see just as much from the other side with people saying its just as good as high end bikes and thats just as silly. I would suggest people new to drop bar bikes/gravel bikes doing some searches for some fitting tips / set up advice. I see little things like the hoods being tilted so far up that the drops are pretty much useless as you cant rest your fingers on the levers anymore. another tip about contact points for new people is that drop bars come in wildly different measurements, for $50 Ritchey sells bars in every imaginable width, drop, reach, flare measurements. using the drops on slightly flared bars with less drop and some compliance feel so much better on the rougher stuff than ridding on the hoods (night and day difference)

@jhernandez418 the most important things you are going to want to check are the bolts (make sure they arent loose, shifting, the wheels are put in appropriately with the quick release, the brakes that they are working and adjusted, then the fit. By fit, I mean adjust the drop bars where you want them and adjust the height of the seatpost and position of the saddle. You can always take it to a local bike shop if you feel like this is a bit much 😁 I know it seems like a lot, but safety with bikes is very important. Especially if you get it from a store like Walmart where potentially the people putting it together are not 100% sure what they are doing.

@chickensendies
@chickensendies 5 ай бұрын
One of the main differences you will notice is most gravel bikes have drop bars and mountain bikes will have flat bars. If you are on more single track styled trail systems Id say mountain bike would be more your style. If you are going to go more gravel oriented or even paved paths then gravel will be better for you. Another main difference is most gravel bikes have rigid forks or suspension forks with not much travel. Mountain bikes have suspension forks to help with drops, roots, or anything else that would get in your way. Hopefully that helps!

Saddles, pedals and stems are pretty much guaranteed replacements for me. Which makes me roll my eyes at some of those high dollar bikes with $600 integrated bars and $450 saddles. The G1 Medium is actually a pretty long bike by Drop Bar standards. It has the same Eff TTL as a Poseidon X Ambition in XL and a longer Reach. It feels cramped because it has a 60 mm stem instead of a 110 mm like the Ambition. Going to need a long post for the big guys with that 50 cm seat tube.

To the "just spend a bit more buying a better used bike" people...ok...can you actually find a better used drop bar gravel bike for $500? I'm not talking about an old road bike that can only take MAYBE 32C knobby tires. I'm not talking about a cyclocross bike that can only take 38C tires. I'm talking about an actual gravel bike (with proper endurance geometry) capable of taking 40C-50C tires. I barely see any actual used gravel bikes for sale in my area. When I do they tend to be $1000+. The closest I can really think of in price point is something like the Poseidon bikes. New they are like $600+, and I doubt they are spec'ed all that much better than this bike. In a few years this will probably change once the gravel bike craze has completely saturated the market. However, at this moment in time actual gravel bikes aren't that common to find just yet. I think this bike is a great starter bike with some room for upgrading. Nothing appears to be proprietary so swapping better off the shelf parts should be easy. If you buy quality components to upgrade it you can move many of those components to a better, lighter frame in the future and return this bike back to stock to keep it as a beater/loaner or sell it.
@chickensendies
@chickensendies 7 ай бұрын
At the price, I do not think there is anything that comes close to it. The used market would be the other best option but that is mostly luck and time. As far as I can tell, no proprietary parts and it is absolutely upgradable 😁
