Being left-handed, in a right-handed world. Means we have to adapt to a somewhat alien environment from an early age. Everything from social greetings, writing (where we all individually adapt to a hand position where we don't smudge/can see our writing), using common tools (scissors, etc, etc) Personally, I've found all these obstacles have made me more aware of the small day-to-day details. An advantageous boost.

Well in traditional piano music the more complex melodies appear in the right hand, while supporting chords appear in the left hand. A left handed pianist called Christopher Seed had the first ever left handed piano built for him, where the keys and the pedals were mirrored so that the notes needed for the complex melodies were on his left side and the chords on his right. It probably involves re-learning where the notes are but if you're a life long lefty pianist it's probably worth it!

Then, there's that question people constantly ask in disbelief that really ticks me off: "You're left-handed!!??" They make it sound as if it is a sin to be left-handed. She works with numerical data, so now has the speed advantage over others in her office, because she inputs data right-handed whilst mousing left-handed. She cannot use a mouse right-handed. Incidentally, my mouse is always configured 'normally', but positioned for left-hand use. Index finger operates left-click and scroll wheel, but switches to right-click if both buttons are being used. Middle finger then does left-click, but index finger still operates the scroll wheel.

Pianos are used with both hands, therefore having proper dexterity in both hands is required. Screwdrivers have an ambidexterious design, meaning they are symetrical and it makes no difference what hand uses it. Guitars use both hands, yet they preform very different roles. One hand has to be faster while another has to be more nimble. People often find their dominant hand to be faster at picking and learn to use their other hand more nimbly.

Since then I've actually gotten much better at left handed drumming and now can switch between which hand plays what in a rhythm which frees up room for new fill ideas. I wouldn't say I'm an ambidextrous drummer but I'm not far off!
@ArchangelSteve8 жыл бұрын
+TheGreatMoonFrog Being a left-handed drummer is absolutely the worst because everyone involved in live music hates you: the sound techs sorting out your kit, the drummers on before and/or after you because of how long it takes to reorientate the kit, the audience who're fed up of waiting for drummers delaying gigs, and the promoters putting on the gigs because the increased time it takes to swap bands is messing up each band's given starting time/set length. At least unlike with lefty guitars/bass there's no real extra cost to being a lefty drummer, the only real piece of kit you need a left-handed version of is a double bass pedal...

@bigbenhebdomadarius62528 жыл бұрын
+Curt TDH Like sexual orientation, handedness is a spectrum. People can range from fully right-handed, through ambidextrous, to fully left-handed. Most of the population falls somewhere between fully right-handed and ambidextrous, and only about ten percent of us are close enough to the left-handed end of the spectrum to identify ourselves as left-handed. James mentioned the current theories about what causes handedness, but no one is really sure yet what the real explanation is. As with sexual orientation, there seems to be a genetic element involved, but it does not appear to be the entire explanation. Forcing left-handers to use their right hands causes stammering (King George VI was a famous example) and messes with physical coordination, so handedness is clearly not simply a choice.

It's grossly prejudicial to allow the 10% of people who are Southpaws only one day of each year to celebrate their left-handedness. We demand 36.5 days!

As long as it's written horizontally and top-to-bottom, your hand will never actually rest on the ink, even if you're going right to left (because the tip of the pen is slightly above the side of your hand). In Japanese, Korean and Chinese, however, there is that risk (since they can be written top to bottom and then right to left). They were traditionally written with long brushes, though, so the hand never rested on the page (as it does with quills and pens). And these days ink dries quickly.

Glass lenses are not made with lathes - they are ground using an abrasive such as carborundum and then polished with super fine abrasives such as rouge, or more commonly these days aluminium oxide. It's actually fairly easy to make a rectangular lens, but somewhat of a waste of materials.

I like being a lefty and I'm not sure why. It's a part of me that doesn't really matter much, but it is a part of me.
@Kaslai11 жыл бұрын
It has nothing to do with the lens actually. Lenses are usually made with lathes, which only make round things. Making the lenses rectangular would be an additional manufacturing step that, at least in older days, runs the risk fracturing it. Further, manual focuses usually rotate the lens, which would cause issues if the lens was rectangular. Another reason for making captured images rectangular is for convenience. Storing a rectangular image as a computer file is simpler than storing a circle

For me it depends on what I'm doing with my hands. Sometimes I'm a righty and sometimes a lefty.
