Since 2000, no effective irrigation policy has been carried out by the Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture in this region. Therefore, there are 10,000 registered and more than 120,000 unregistered irrigation wells dug by farmers in this region.More wells causes more sinkholes.

In fact they even cut down some of the few remaining forest patches there to make space for even more farms. Nearly the whole central and northern parts of Turkey were once nearly fully covered in deep forests.

Yes. Konya is a dry place but farmers are planting high water demanding crops just to earn more money, and they use ground water to irrigate. This causes water bed to get unstable/decrease in size and you get these holes as a result

Sugar beet and corn, which require a lot of water, should not be planted in that area. Since these two agricultural products provide a lot of income, the technical offices and politicians who control agriculture cannot impose restrictions on this issue. Farmers are also very aware of this situation, but as in this video, they act as if they don't know. They are not honest. If you are wondering why these sinkholes are there, watch the movie Burning Days by Director Emin Alper.

As a Turk, I must say. There are no educated local farmers in our country. If they have an opportunity, they use it until it dries up and destroys it. For a long time, crops that required excessive water were planted. And these crops were irrigated by wild flooding method. This also deteriorated the quality of the soil. Moreover, many chemicals were used because crops could not grow in that soil. Because of their greed, they constantly damaged the quality of their lands and became dehydrated.

I hope the farmer was given advice to grow sustainable crops? I live in Spain and to see the plastic greenhouse and forced cultivation is hard on the already dry land. less water intensive crops, licensed and prohibited ground water extraction. much better water management and retention (we have seen how the flash floods are so powerful but not how much of that water was saved.) In my area in Southern Valencia region you can see how the evening dew keeps plants alive even in hot summers as we have just had again this year. This is a natural action yet no one is harvesting this resource? I fear for his region as I suspect it is already too late , once lime stone is weakened it is like chalk and crumbles away or is washes by passing underground water flow. The same will happen in Spain as it is no ones job no ones responsibility, until it is too late, then the wailing and hand wringing will start...

My father also has large field in Konya and makes agriculture, and he is very educated but still uses extremely high water from ground, because everybody else does the same thing. This year he make profit approximately 1 TL for each kg of pepper (1$ for 35kg). If he decide not to use that much water, it is impossible to gain that little profit and it is unnecessary to grow plants. So, what is the solution: government must inspect and ban usage of that much ground water strictly for everybody at the same time. Individuals can not do anything other than stimulating and forcing the executives.

It is bad for nature, but I am happy because people reap what they sow. Konya is one of the driest provinces in Turkey. There is not much precipitation. However, greedy and ignorant farmers have blatantly planted corn, alfalfa, sugar beet, and sunflower which require lots of water. To water these crops, Konyan farmers have excessively overused and drained the underground water, and now their lands are getting swallowed by the emptiness they created.

"Subsidence" is the word that was mentioned (not even pronounced correctly) but not recognized in this report. Sinkholes are just a warning, but a real problem is water levels that are not appropriately managed and subsidence that is a result. Like in California, Nevada, and Arizona, poor water management will be a major problem with shifting rain and weather patterns. For now pipes, roads, homes and overall infrastructure are damaged because of shifting ground.

Some day I hope that someone figures out a way of cleaning the salt out of ocean water. That would help as well. But for the immediate solution people need to rethink the irrigation practices being push by governments. Using sprinklers may save a little water inatially in the long term it drains out the auquifer. Flood irrigation is essential to prevent this from occurring
