What do you think? Should locations be shared? If you enjoyed the video drop it a like 👍
@steverobbo770Ай бұрын
Totally agree with you lads. Most times when I'm watching Steve and Mark, I'll look at where you are, where you've parked etc and sit with my OS maps and try to suss out where you are.😊 When out, I like to show what I see but maybe selfishly, I don't really want people to come.🙂

My personal opinion is that it's more short form content like tiktok or reels on Instagram that are the issue with locations. I think the People who watch wild camping videos on KZbin like yours or mine or any of those lads are already wild campers looking for there armchair camping video whilst there not out camping. I'm quite happy to share a location with any fellow wild camper and even shared one with you lad.
@thegeordiewildcamperАй бұрын
Good point Chris, the shorter format does tend to lean towards it. Im not sure what we do about that and i'd hate to be peddled along with those guys. I tend to share with those I trust - feels like its a different debate in Northumberland. Cheers

I'm just kitting up to start my wild camping adventures but I already agree with you guys, ill put the leg work in and discover places myself when needed, i've seen too many lovely places trashed by people with a simple lack of respect for our beautiful countryside! keep on keepin on!
@garrywhelan921128 күн бұрын
You're doing the right thing. Northumberland is still a wild place and long may it continue. If it remains a hard place to get to them it stays preserves for longer. The Lake District still has quiet corners but the core areas are blown out now. Keep doing what you're doing 👍👍👍

Thanks for this! I’ve shared some camp locations but I think this comes out on my videos because of my natural love for the area. As a lone female camper I never share where I am on the night of the camp and I don’t usually choose to camp at prime spots as I enjoy seeking out my own. I like being vague to disorientate folk who won’t respect it as much as I do. I’m always respectful in my areas because that’s just me but I do feel like I need to set that good example too, preach to the converted n’ all that. Most places in the Peak District get trashed by day visitors and usually abandoned fly camps happen because they aren’t prepared for weather change or how challenging wild camping can be! It’s not all sunsets and cloud inversions is it ? 😂…ATB Sarah ⛺️

Agree with the lads, don’t say the places, like you said finding them is part of the reward, unless it’s an obvious location then fine,if someone asks, which people do, I’ll only tell people in a private message the spot im at if I know they are a responsible camper, interesting talking point, good video mate , atb Mick 👍

Totally agree with your sentiment in terms of having a bit of a clue, but then making an effort yourself via map reserach or better still, going for a hike to 'case the joint'. Respect and taking care of the precious gift that the outdoors provides doesn't seem to feature in some people's vocabulary or mindset.

Great upload mate and a very important topic. I think COVID really messed up the wild camping committee. You had so many " non camper " trying it for the 1st time and absolutely trashing the places. I think leave no trace includes not highlighting exact locations. Just found the Channel mate. Great presence on camera. New sub from me. Greetings from Ireland ☘️☘️🤙

I’ve never really gone out my way to hide my locations deliberately. My local ones I always tend to film enough of my hike that it’s easy to find if you wanted. I can see in your case why though as your closer to a city and closer to a bigger wild community.
@thegeordiewildcamperАй бұрын
I get it mate, think it all depends on where the location is? closer to the city the easier it is to get to.

Good video Steve, definitely agree with not telling all our sought out favourite sites, I can't even figure out which crags have been wrecked the most but will find out next time I am there as camp a few, couldn't even figure out todays site but no biggie as you say and I agree, it is better to find them, take care mate, keep up the videos, Sean McG

Good topic to discuss, especially with like minded folk. I’m with you lot on all points, maybe share with people you can trust. Pre Covid seemed different in my opinion, less people camping, less mess & fires, I put my hands up for naming places, not now though, too many irresponsible idiots who have zero appreciation towards the outdoors. Those crags you spoke about, I’d never camp there again, such a shame but that’s the way it is, the minority definitely spoil it for everyone. Cheers for sharing mate, nice video 👍👍
@thegeordiewildcamperАй бұрын
Cheers Dave, yeah those Crags I remember having a few conversations about many years ago now. Like you say its done for now. What I dont understand is how some of these bigger channels dont get any level of scrutiny. Anyway cheers for watching.

Hi Fellow Geordie's, great vlog. I agree that there are some irresponsible people who care not about their environment but I think on the whole I would like to think that the vast majority of campers do LNT ( Leave no trace) and are responsible when camping. I would love to get out on a wild/stealth camp but I do not drive and being disabled I am reliant on kind friends giving me a lift. It is two years since I've been camping now and I miss the freedom and peace that camping gives you. At 68 people may say I'm too old to go camping now- My mobility isn't good and I have a pacemaker, but I'm sure there are places that don't tax the body that I could go and spend a relaxing time with like minded people. If any of you guys live in the Wallsend area and could offer a lift I would be very appreciative. I would be prepared to share costs.

Always enjoy your vids. If I've found it myself it's not getting named. If I've got fond memories of a place it's not getting named. If it's a well known place then I'd name it and it'll help focus the wild campers who are idiots, for reasons mentioned in your video, into certain areas. Personally I loved figuring out where someone is via Outdoor Active and Google Earth. Keep the vids coming, they're great 👌 Cheers Mark

Ooh a nice discussion. I myself have in the past given away a couple of locations in Northumberland purely due to naivety when i first started wildcamping. However nowadays i dont like to. Simply because of a, it encourages those who dont follow the LNT policy and b, as someone who works for a large estate in the area knows that they don't want too many campers in areas where they are trying to work the land and look after the livestock and wildlife. Ive been asked to move twice and both times have moved on out of respect for the keepers, shepherds etc. Ive also been asked not to advertise where i am in the national park. It is a bug bear of mine when exact locations are advertised via grid references etc. Probs get some stick for saying that but hey ho 😂. Good topic steven. Interesting to hear others views on it 😊. And as an often solo female wildcamper i genuinely feel safer out in the hills than i do in a city or town. Alot of my wildcamps i dont video for purely selfish reasons 😊
@DOUGIEmcfc-zm6pzАй бұрын
Yep keep it stum. I have one place the farmer don't like campers but don't have a problem with me, as I respect his land. That's in N Wales 👍

Some great points there fella, is it as bad up northumberland as it is in the lake district, the videos of wildcamping in the lakes are far easier to recognise so naming most places will have little effect for undesirable people going, ive watched plenty of videos of camps up that way, hopefully try a camp up there at some stage,
@thegeordiewildcamperАй бұрын
I think as its a bit more local to some it certainly has a stigma and once its out theres no turing back!
@WildCamper3 күн бұрын
1) Just dont want to turn up and there be other people there. 2) fear of that spot being trashed. Thats it really!
@ExploreAboveAndBelowАй бұрын
I've seen to many low lying forests etc trashed by people taking "disposable" tents and loads of drink on "wild camp's" then leaving it all behind and stagger home. A worrying development was when only two days ago I discovered the usual pile of trash dumped not far below a summit that's a good two hour hike to reach. I don't hold any influence on where people camp but i certainly wouldn't be naming spots to Joe Public.
@thegeordiewildcamperАй бұрын
yeah likewise, its such a shame we have to do that!

I call them muggles. They expect to just be given locations. I will share mine with others who I know will be responsible, but I won't over share anything for fear of it being occupied when I want to be there. If I see a camp I like I'll be checking other videos and maps and Google earth for it. Places that take a while to get to are no issue really, but again just a comment of the area is enough and allows you to explore to find own spot

I'm a Dartmoor camper so many people know where you are, but, if I go elsewhere, not a chance would I share. I also have a camper van and I wince when I see the muppets with fires and leaving rubbish. i think it's this throw away and entitled society in which we live and I really don't know how to solve it. It's sad

I could share my spots for like minded hikers/campers. People who share the principles of leave no trace and peace and quiet. But you never know these days.
@northumberlandmountainhopper27 күн бұрын
Hi and good topic, I certainly don’t talk locations anymore, I think you learn not too with what goes on now, perhaps on a known summit it would not matter, there is too much mess appearing, if you have a map it’s not hard to check locations anyway from views in videos. Cheers from the Bivy

I have absolutely no influence on anyone and I'm usually very very high up so it's never bothered me naming places. That said, if I had an online presence I'd swerve naming places. I've seen first hand how scummy some people can be and I wouldn't want to risk influencing people to hit those gorgeous camp spots. Take care mate, Adge
@craig3401Ай бұрын
I guess it's a double edged sword when naming places i always go where I like the look of sometimes it's helpful to see vids to see if there's water on the route or suitable pitches. I do find it double standards tho at times when you and others in your vid name places in the lakes or other locations but never do for the cheviots. I do get the point of not wanting places trashed tho.
@stigfloberghagenphotographyАй бұрын
I think it really depends. In Norway there isnt really any pressure on nature because of wild camping. So I will name the location if its very obvious and that wont have any significant effect. If its just any random location I just call it local or nothing at all. Greqt video and thoughts 🙂👍
@tezizz-ytАй бұрын
you give more than enough hints to anyone interested enough to find your spots, and the people that take the time to do the research are mostly going to be the same as those who are gonna treat the spots with respect. it's the low effort 'wild campers' who cause so many of the issues unfortunately.
@thegeordiewildcamperАй бұрын
nailed it mate
@whatsnottohikeАй бұрын
unless it's obvious where you are, I don't generally say where it is. However, the reasons I don't give, and this might sound quite selfish, is because If I've gone to the lengths of finding a spot, going off trail, walking through some bog or whatever to find it, I feel I've earned that to myself and in this world of not being able to be alone or find silence anywhere, that place is mine and mine only given the lengths I've gone to to find it. Cheers

/edit, just came across as combative and know-it-all/ Think you meant polyester rather than sil when talking about yer tent fly. /Literally all I needed to say, sorry 😂 bad day at work and a few beers, no excuses on my part/ Don't tell people camping spots, imo. Even some of the ones who bang on about leave no trace are actual muppets who indeed do leave a trace, or blare music out, or pitch at midday or whatever.
