That is because, most of the time, women have internalized the idea that their worth is directly linked to their clothing or their outward appearance and they resort to shame or judge other women who may or may not have triggered this internalization. Also, some women can just be really mean by nature, like any other human. It is really really frustrating though.

For everyone saying that fashion judgement is passed on both genders. They didn't deny the fact that men face it. They were trying to point out the fact that women face much more pressure and in a disproportionate manner. Women are expected to be fashionable, whether it be clothes, accessories or makeup. These things have been marked as stereotypically feminine and so men are actually expected not to use them. If they do, they're called "gay" or "queer" which are intended to be insulting in this context (that in itself is a very damaging notion). In India, these concerns are magnified and women are expected to be traditional and modern with the right balance of "dress modern but don't reveal more than what we want you to" which is actually very difficult for many women to follow who wish to express themselves differently. And since this is a feminist channel, they're displaying this struggle faced by women. They are not denying men's troubles.

Men mostly wear formal clothing in traditional gatherings, which they can wear repeatedly to various functions. But there is pressure on women not to repeat the clothes they wore in last function. And to top that these clothes cost a lot. It is too much to buy new clothes every time. I've decided to go against these traditions( my family is supportive). I'm going to wear sober Kurtis which I also wear to office and minimal jewelries. After marriage I'll wear sober sarees. I'm also going to rebel against buying tons of gold jewelries to show my status, my personality is enough to say who I am.

From my experience, women themselves do not want to break stereotypes. For ex: waxing. Many women do it under pressure and it is often said that hairless body attracts men more. Why can't a woman feel good in her own body hair. Next coming to fashion, it is again a choice. But women judge other women more than men judge women.

This is so great! In every video you bring to light things that are seem inconspicuous but are actually things of great importance. I had phases of this "fashion sense" in my life. At first i thought not wanting to wear "girlish" clothes and be interested in fashion was cool because that makes me not like other girls( facepalm). Then came the "i will think too much about the clothes i wear and focus on the fashion industry" because that would make me look "stylish" and not dumb cause everyone in my family knew so much about the latest trends. Now i am at this phase where i am like "dress like what you feel" . If i feel like a couch potato , then i am going to dress like one. If i feel like i run this fuckin world, i am going to dress like the queen I am . But after seeing this video, i have new ideas. It is true that we put a lot of effort in deciding what we wear, when we can channel that time into something more productive! But then i am afraid it will that be "not being like other girls" again and will make me not a true feminist. Also, i think this whole "fashion trends and dress like you feel" stuff is also just a ploy to further aggregate capitalism. We need to really think on it.

I'm just more focused on the classics, the "undying" & "evergreen" clothes but mostly, casual. Some say I'm a like a tomboy since I like hoodies & mostly prefer colours like black, blue & red but honestly it's just me being myself. I'm in the academics for long and thankfully I'm not judged at my workplace and among the academic community for refusing to keep up with "trend" or look "stylish". My wardrobe doesn't have any bling or glitters. But whenever I'm at social gatherings, I feel weird at not having flashy "appropriate" dresses for those occasions. Not that anybody makes any derogatory remarks but they express their wish to see me in a saree. 🥴🙄

Yes it's true but it's different when it comes to woman because of the history n stereotypical norm that only focuses on women. For example men r specifically judged for their financial status but woman r judged on how well they fit on norm society has fixed for them. They r not judged for financial status because women working out of her home is still not normalised as it is for men.

Hey there, fashion is nothing except a mere trend. Slim girls were considered beauty a while ago but now girls with big asses are trending (kim, nickiminaj etc.) That doesnt mean Alia Bhat who doesnt have big ass, isnt beautiful. Its just that she is not the trending beauty. BTW social media is ruining our generation, people are being so much insecure about themselves.....watch the social dilemma.

The problem is we are narrow minded . Yes the ways of criticism has changed ; according to the educated morden generation :if you don't wear revealing clothes or or wear makeup you are old fashioned ... When will they understand that modernity doesn't mean wearing trendy clothes . It mean letting one lead their lives whichever way they want to instead of putting lables on them !

They say women are always targeted for their appearance and how they present themselves. But most of the times, these are the same people who go on calling a man with an unkempt beard 'jaanwar,' or 'jhipra', tell men to wear 'less feminine' colours and being constantly told to dress like a 'civilised' man. Please talk about that as well.

I feel that men are more criticized on the basis of clothes... they cant wear bright clothes, dresses, skirts, flowery and "feminine " cloths harry styles keeps getting trolled abt his clothing choices ... If they do, they're called "gay" or "queer" which are intended to be insulting in this context (that in itself is a very damaging notion) for not being insecure abt their sexuality... harry styles is the biggest fashion icon and that's on period... Women are judged for not having fashion sense, men on the other hand are judged for having any fashion sense at all, for experimenting with colours, patterns, accessories etc... but men are not criticized for their clothes especially during traditional family gatherings where I as girl is forced to wear a suit or lehnga whereas my brother is allowed to wear jeans and shirts just because a plain cotton kurta pajama is "too uncomfortable" for him to wear... fashion judgment is passed on to both genders. Iwas trying to point out the fact that women face much more pressure and in a disproportionate manner. Women are expected to be fashionable, whether it be clothes, accessories or makeup. These things have been marked as stereotypically feminine and so men are actually expected not to use them. In India, these concerns are magnified and women are expected to be traditional and modern with the right balance of "dress modern but don't reveal more than what we want you to" which is actually very difficult for many women to follow who wish to express themselves differently.

@Halo Yup, agree. Was expecting something in the lines of - how men structured women to believe they are the bearers of culture/honour, how women's World was structured to be small, how men were behind structuring women's fashion even. All these are implied; just that I wanted a stronger content. This seems a soft take...
@luckykumar19154 жыл бұрын
@Halo don't blame only on men for forming these social stereotype.Earlier women were out of economic sphere it just because they choosed too.Nobody could be supressed for such a long time.In earlier time in india farming was major economic activity and it demand lot of physical strength and womens body are not designed by nature to do such harsh physical activity.So they to choosed to do household work.But as our country progress there were different economic activity which require less physical labour more of mental labour.So nowadays women want too come in economic sphere and thats normal .But in these period of time it became social taboo for women going out of house.But these these norms are breaking slowly and we will get rid out of it.But what i found as per my observation is old men are more open to these change than old women.And offcourse new genration has high percentage of who didn't care about these social stereotypes.By blaming only on men you are considering your gender too weak who can't take stand for themselves.

Trust me, men are also judged! 🙈 Moreover, women judge other women and men when it comes to fashion. Fashion can be empowering for some and restrictive for others. It’s for the individuals to decide how they want to look and what they want to wear. There has been a constant buzz to wear what one is comfortable in. There is enough scientific evidence that fashion can instil self-confidence in people that is rewarding in many ways!
