A student-led protest movement in Thailand is demanding reform of the monarchy - in a country where it's illegal to defame, insult, or threaten the king, queen, heir-apparent or regent. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog
Thailand's lèse-majesté law, which forbids any insult to the monarchy, is among the strictest in the world.
Over the past five months a student-led protest movement has started demanding reform of the monarchy and an end to military coups, of which Thailand has had twenty in modern times.
The demonstrations sent shockwaves through a country which is taught from birth to revere and love the monarchy and fear the consequences of talking about it.
BBC South East Asia Correspondent Jonathan Head reports for Newsnight.

The prime minister has always been a....rough guy, to put it plainly, but do you and your friends remember why he, a soldier, has to be here, in this position? We live in a country that democracy isn't democratic, at least, not in a practical way. To be a working democratic country, its people need to have a true ability to analyze and synthesize what's really best for them. Many elected prime ministers come and go... some with big chuncks of money that was supposed to be used for the country, some with even bigger chunks money that he couldn't spend them all after years of being exiled and still has enough money to ignite movements to come back to this country. Believe me, I understand your point of view "Should we respect a man just want to stay in power, no matter what??" but what if....the thing he did, he did for the country... To protect this dumb country from being abused by some wicked family... to push the country forward, like it was supposed to, long time ago while being cursed at, sworn at... he knows and still goes on. I respect the man, I don't like him, but still respect the man. the time will tell, one day you guys might be proud to have a chance studying in the same school as him.

@@Iceyfire12 You know nothing about Thailand. The foot in bhuddist culture is considered to be the lowest and dirtiest part of the body. When speaking to the king or queen - Thais call themselves ใต้ฝ้าละอองธุลีพระบาท which is translated as Dust under his royal foot. When speaking to the crowned prince of the royal family - We call ourselves ใต้ฝ่าละอองพระบาท the word “ธุลี” which mean “dust” is taken out. But the word “ละออง” which also means “dust” is still presence. Thus can either be translated as “We are dust under his/her royals foot”.(somewhat a better dust than the first categories). When speaking to a royal family member(excluding those 1,2 categories). We Thais call ourselves ใต้ฝ่าพระบาท this time the word ละออง(which means dust) is taken out. Thus can be translated as “We are under his/her royal foot”. The last one. When we are speaking to a non-royal family aristocrat. We Thai call our selve ใต้เท่า which can be translated as “We are under his/her non-royal foot”. These 4 nouns are taught to every Thai when we are 9-10 years old so its not surprise we are angry to think it happened. Now you’ll understand everything when a Thai protester say something like “we will no longer be under his foot”.

One of the shittiest parts about the effects of this call for reformation of the constitution is the split between the older generations and millennials. You wouldn’t believe the damages it has caused between families, most of the parents are sadly still attached to the older norms and refuses to believe that the kids are doing this for nothing but the better future we need and there is no organization pulling strings behind this. We just want better lives, the simplest fact they won't get. How sad af is this? Smh 🤦🏽‍♀️

As someone from Nepal, a nation which recently abolished monarchy, I just felt like giving my views on this. If the Thai people are not happy with the deeds of their royals, it is of utmost importance to improve their royals, reduce their executive power, and so on, but abolishing monarchy is not a good solution at all !! In Nepal, the lifestyle of royals were not that lavish to criticize as of Thai, but the first catastrophe was the Royal massacre in which the beloved royal family was murdered, and the king's brother was made the new king. As none of the new king's family was dead (though the new queen was severely wounded),people suspected he was behind it. As the government wasn't able to conduct the elections for a long time because of the civil war, the king dismissed the government, and made a cabinet of ministers on his leadership. He assured that he would reinstate democracy after the civil war, and elections were over, but people started to strike. Eventually, without harming more people, he just stepped down in 19 days. The following days marked with excessive outer interference in the constitution making process, ethnic, and geographic hatred, large Corruption scandals, constant attacks against the Nepali culture via several bills, biased role of the President, and so on. This has caused huge unrest in Nepal nowadays, and Nepalese are at the moment, again asking for monarchy, and Hindu nation !

Something the west can either find annoying or actually different. They won’t make a handicapped in a wheelchair to stand up. Honestly I sleep before the movie starts and wake up in the first 5 minutes nothing happened and of course I didn’t stand lol. It’s not strict strict! Just don’t come to Thailand and bad mouth the monarchy which shouldn’t even be an issue for foreigners who come to actually enjoy Thailand.

Being a 'half Thai, half British' person living in the UK it always confused me as to why it's a prison sentence just for saying something 'negative' about the King and his Royal family. I used to ask my mother, what if he did something REALLY bad? She didn't like those conversations. I'd also ask about what they actually did for the country, not a lot it seems. I also found it unbelievable how the poorest people would literally give their last 'penny' in donation to the Royal family as if they were some kind of 'wishing well', even though they are the wealthiest monarchy in the whole world. Baffling.

@Milan Toth Absurdity of your comment just made me spechless. How does monarch having power decrease extremism? By prosecuting people who disagree with the monarch? If anything, monarchism leads to extremism. That's why we have protests in Thailand, that's why we had Russian revolution. These nations were divided by the extremism that monarchism creates, the people who despise the monarch and the people who love the monarch and this happens in countries where monarch has power. If a monarch is there only symbolically and the government is run democratically, there won't be clashes between the monarchists and those who oppose the monarch. I can't think of one example where monarch having power would decrease extremism. Sure, the monarch can impose ridiculous laws to cease riots and so on, but is that to you a good solution?

@@demoscassi8055 When did he change it. If you mean the constitution change during the coup where he sign off on? If you actually understand the king role in the poltical word you understand that the king will sign off any change to the law or the constituion as long as these change are present to him by the poltical body that is in power, no matter what party (For or against him). I mean Rama 9 sign off so many law when Thaksin and his sister was in power and we all know they are not advocate for the royal family. I even the British Queen sign off on laws and rarely rejected them sicne its been filter through the elected parliment. Get yourself educated on the role of Mornarchy in Consitutional Mornarchy. If you are hang up on the consitution change during the last coup they look back in history and educate yourself on why the coup happen in the first place and why the other 65.8 million people didn't revolt on the street with the 'Protestor". @@NightSufer17099 Dear mate, the law that gave him supreme political power, extra wealth, personal military, ability to leave the country and 'work from home' from somewhere else like Germany. Yeah, De Jure, it was the military that gave him the constitute to sign off. De facto? They had backroom talk and wrote constitute to favor him. Constitute monarch's king/queen just sign off the constitution without doing anythings. He's gain too much from this constitution that the normal 'constitute monarch'. Just because he doesnt own absolute power yet doesnt mean he took no extra power. He has much more power that his father nowaday and would be increased if there had been no protest. He took crown property as his own.( Go check those companies' website and look at the shareholders and don't say you wont do coz you don't believe. If you don't believe, vindicate your own believe by go check it). Also he has several army units under his direct command. And so on.

More Specific question is why monarchies having powers over the people still exist in 2020.. So, it will exclude constitutional monarchies such as in UK, Spain, and Japan from the answer of the original question. Why? Because those countries having absolute monarchies are considered failed in social and politics development. Why not? Because the developments of countries politics happen all the time. One day, all countries will adopt new kind of politics and leave Feudalism and Absolute Monarchy behind. Sorry for being aggressive. Actually, I am kinda new to this subject.
