Hi! I just absolutely love you!! I like all the chicken advice I can get!! I've got 20 chickens at the moment.. I will be giving 3 away soon, to a neighbor who I trust will give them the best care. 2 Hens and a rooster, that way they can brood more chicks and grow their own flock. 😁👍

I have one other question. we spoke before😊. my chickens are now finally free ranging and good friends with my pomeranian...they play together...i have a new fear. Tuesday is going to be 100 degrees! Even though most of my yard is shady, in the heat of the day, they stay under my deck....I put ice cubes in their water 3-4 times a day and I keep giving them frozen blueberries to try to keep them cool...I was considering getting them diapers so I can bring them inside on Tuesday but in chicken videos, it looks like they are extremely unhappy and dysfunctional until they are "trained". if I didn't have carpets I wouldn't care...what can I do?
@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden 6 жыл бұрын
I have no experience with chicken diapers but I would say you are doing pretty well. One hint I will pass on is to put a shallow dish of water in the shade, preferably in a breezy place. They will paddle their feet in the cool water.

Chickens in my garden ok I will do that as well...we went to Lows and found these misting "hoses". i attached them all around my deck so every time the chickens go in and out, they get "misted" with a very fine mist. also I bought a cheap electrical pressure washer that rinses the poop of the deck in 5 minutes👍

Hello, what records do you have on your garden
@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden Жыл бұрын
For vegetables, I keep a notebook in which I record which seeds I sow, where I got them, when I sowed them, how well they germinated, when and where I planted seedlings, when I harvested the crop and notes about how good it was. I have experimented with using Facebook to keep photos of my garden throughout the year but I'm not very regular at that. It's called My Plentiful Garden if you want to look at it. For fruit trees I keep a notebook recording which variety of each fruit tree I planted, where I got it from and its expected growth and fruiting characteristics with a map of where I planted it, and annual notes of any maintenance such as pruning or spraying, how much fruit I harvested and any notes.

Hi, my question is why IS my chicken laying again now, in the middle of winter? We are first time chicken owners and were not expecting any eggs again until the spring. We noticed that her comb had started to expand in size again and a check of the nesting box a few days ago revealed an egg (and there has been one every day since). Any ideas why this would be, and should we be concerned? She is about 10 months old. Thanks, we love your videos and have found them a great source of information as new chicken owners.
@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden 2 жыл бұрын
So - the middle of winter - you are in the southern hemisphere? It's just past the winter solstice and the days are starting to get longer. If everything else is right, the lengthening days are one of the triggers to start egg production. You don't say what breed she is. If she's a heritage breed I would guess she hardly started laying last summer-autumn before stopping for the winter. If she's a commercial hybrid I'm more surprised that she even stopped laying at her age. Either way, it's good news and nothing to be concerned about at all, you'vejust got a head start on spring. Enjoy those eggs, and your chickens 🙂

Thank you. I have learned a lot from all kinds of sources over the years. There is a lot of good information on the internet as long as you take notice of whether the source has a scientific basis. But I also take a lot of notice of my own experience with my chickens because there can be differences between breeds, food, regulations and environment in different countries.

I am having quite the issue with my hens and thought perhaps you might be able to help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have hens that have lost most of their feathers and they are not growing back,I use DE in their coop and yard for mites but nothing seems to help.ANY suggestions????? Thank You for any help you may give. Pam Harbison Texas, USA
@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam. How worrying for you. You don't say why they have lost their feathers, where from or how long this has been for. I guess it's high summer in Texas at the moment and maybe hot? Are they going through an early molt because of heat stress? If that's the case you just need to support them with cool drinks and treats, fresh water and shade. If it's not overly hot high protein snacks can be good, eg mealworms. Molting can be quick or can take weeks. If it's been more than 12 weeks something is wrong. Have you checked for mites on the birds and in their coop? Are the chickens picking out their own or each other's feathers? Is a rooster doing the damage? Is the feather loss all over or in patches, if so where? Figuring out the cause is going to be the key to treating it. Maybe this link will help. thisnzlife.co.nz/why-your-chicken-is-losing-feathers/ 🙂
@Bobbi517
@Bobbi517 2 жыл бұрын
@@chickensinmygarden It started with a rooster who was very aggressive mating. Then this hen is on the lowest pecking order and smaller than the other hens. It is extremely hot here but she has been like this for some time. The rooster injured her with his nails mounting her so I doctored her in a cage by herself. She got better and I got rid of the rooster. Then I didn’t have a rooster for a few months and her feathers still didn’t come back. I don’t think the other hens are pulling them out, I have not seen that at all. I put apple cider vinegar in their water, give them vitamins in their water, feed them meal worms and scratch with black sunflower seeds. They free range 3 or 4 days a week, (there are feral cats around here so can’t let them free range all the time) we live in the city but have quite a large yard fenced, but hawks are also around. I can’t figure out what is going on but. Now I have decided to feed her separately extra worms and sunflower seeds so I know for sure she is getting that extra protein. I started that this morning so will let you know how it goes. I put Diatomaceous Earth in the coop and run so when they do dust baths they should get it on themselves so I don’t think it is mites, the other chickens aren’t losing their feathers except on their backs. This one is almost bare all over! Thanks for writing me back and for your help!
@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden 2 жыл бұрын
So it's just one hen, and now general feather loss all over. Unless it's a disease like fungus I'm guessing stress - bottom of the pecking order. Is she laying? Any serious illness will almost certainly stop laying. Extra worms and sunflower seeds seem like a good idea - I'm sure the hen would approve! 🙂

@@chickensinmygarden I don’t think she is laying. Not sure tho. I have 9 hens but only get an average of 7 eggs daily. I also give them oregano which is suppose to be a natural antibiotic altho I haven’t given them any in some time. Maybe I should give her some when I feed her separately. I sure appreciate you caring. Not many ppl really to ask here as I don’t do FB or instagram
@chickensinmygarden
@chickensinmygarden 2 жыл бұрын
So, while you're giving her those extra treats take the opportunity to check her over. How does she seem in herself? Energetic or listless? Is her appetite good? Is her comb bright or pale and floppy? Maybe you can check out her vent - pink and moist or dry and shrivelled. Maybe you will get a chance to see whether her poop is normal. You should start to get an idea about whether she's really sick or just slow at feathering, in which case time and TLC will do the trick 🙂

How sad 😔 I guess just good food and fresh water, making sure they recognise what it is and how to get it, and soft clean bedding to sleep on until they learn to perch. They probably won't have parasites but it would be good to keep an eye out for that. Keep them separate from any other chickens you have. And lots of patience.
